December’s Highlighted Trait: HONESTY Character Counts! I encourage you all to check out the Counseling Connections newsletter published by our counselor, Holly Baxter, each month. While we emphasize the importance of honesty with our students at school each day, we know that parents also work to instill honesty in their children as they grow. Despite our greatest efforts as parents, children may still be untruthful at times and we can best guide them if we understand some of the developmental reasoning behind their actions. Mrs. Baxter includes some very helpful guidance and tips ion this topic n this month’s newsletter, which is available on our website and can be accessed HERE. I also encourage you to attend her parent session next week (see below!).
Do you want to email us? I want to remind everyone in the Brookside community to make sure to use the OPUSD.org domain when emailing school and district staff. The general rule for knowing the email address of any employee: First Initial + Last Name @opusd.org. For example, to email me you would use [email protected]. (We no longer use the @oakparkusd.org domain and appreciate you using the new @opusd.org email addresses exclusively.)
12/9- Spirit Day on Friday! It’s Funny Friday! Our next Student Council sponsored event will be a spirit day! This Friday, December 9th, will not be just any old Friday, it's going to be FUNNY FRIDAY!
You can wear crazy hair, wild socks, your clothes backwards or inside out, bring breakfast for lunch, etc. There will be a gift card to Sweet XO for the student with the craziest hair in each grade level. Start thinking now what you will wear to make this Friday a fun one!

Important Pick-Up News: Field Access at Conifer Closed through 1/8 Beginning November 21st through January 8th -- the lower field (closest to Mae Boyar Park)
will be re-seeded. The area will be fenced off and this will include the gate leading to the
field from Conifer. This gate will remain locked during the re-seeding process and you will not
be able to access campus from this gate. If you park along Conifer to pick up your student
please make other arrangements for a meeting spot, climbing over the fence is not an
option. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Important Morning Drop-off Reminders Parents, in the interests of safety and consideration for others, please do not use the morning drop-off area if your child does not have their backpack or other items in their lap ready to exit the car CURBSIDE. If your child has larger items that must be kept in the trunk, please park, and
walk your child on campus. We appreciate your patience while waiting your turn to drop-off;
safety is our number one priority. Thank you for your cooperation and care for our
Brookside community. We are fortunate to have parent VOLUNTEERS helping our students
each morning. If you would like to improve the process and volunteer to assist with traffic &
safety, please contact Kim Kavett-Moore, VP of Volunteers at [email protected].
December Digital Spotlight With technology at their fingertips, students have been learning about digital
citizenship in the classroom. To further connect the classroom and the home,
we will be creating monthly digital spotlights to help get conversations started
at home. Thank you for joining this partnership to ensure your child’s digital safety and
responsibility.

Growing Tall Oaks Supporting and Building Your Child’s Conflict
Resolution and Self-Advocacy Skills Presented by Cara White & Daniel Veselak, LIFE
Conflicts occur throughout our day, week, and lifetime. At times, conflict can be unavoidable and can leave us feeling angry or down about ourselves. This presentation will help you to grasp the three different types of conflicts, and the ten steps towards conflict resolution that our children experience with friends, siblings, and classmates. Throughout the presentation you will learn self-advocacy skills to teach your children, and learn to understand how your children can help themselves in difficult situations.
LIFE provides comprehensive therapeutic treatment for those in need within the community. At LIFE, Cara White and Daniel Veselak work with pre-teens, adolescents, and young adults, who might be struggling with anxiety, depression, social skill deficits, family conflict, academic/sports pressures and much more.
Thursday, 12/15 7:00 – 8:30 pm
Repeat presentation:

Year-End Giving: Pledge Now to Brookside PTA’s Just for the Kids Annual Giving Campaign! Click HERE to DONATE TODAY! If you have not yet contributed to
Just for the Kids, it is not too
late. This is the PTA’s primary
fundraiser—nothing to buy or
sell, just a straight donation and
is 100% tax deductible.
Thank you to the over 220 families who have donated to
the Brookside PTA’s annual giving campaign. The PTA is working on our list of donors to
gratefully acknowledge your generosity. For families who have not yet contributed, please
know that all amounts are appreciated and consider giving now. We hope by now, you are
able to see some of the programs the PTA funds at Brookside in order to fill the state funding
gap. The state does not fund our music program, our technology instructor, art, the Music Van, Run Club, Reflections, Lunchtime Enrichment programs, and the 2,500 + hours of additional instructional aide time along with library books, additional classroom supplies, the 60 programs we support, and much more; your contributions do. Please see the
infographic above to view where our money goes; every single expenditure is approved by the board and our general association, and the budget is formulated based on membership input from our annual spring survey. Our financials are audited twice yearly
and submitted to the Conejo Council PTA for review. All contributions to the Brookside PTA
are tax-deductible as we are a 501(c)(3). If you have any questions concerning PTA finances,
