1. Identify areas that may need safety signs.

This means auditing your facility for all hazards and potential dangers.

(Be sure to consider areas that are used by both employees and visitors.)

Common potential hazards include:

• Machinery

• Electrical panels

• Aisles

• Forklift zones

• Hazardous waste areas

• Potentially slippery surface areas

2. Pinpoint potential safety hazards

Determine what the hazards could be.

For example:

Dangerous fluids could result in potential hazardous spills.

Fluids could also create ‘slip and fall’ hazards.

3. Determine what message to convey.

Match the message on your signage to the danger posed by the hazard.

It is ideal to convey a short, clear message.

4. Consider the signage placement.

Post signs where they can be easily seen. Location is very important.

• The sign needs to warn BEFORE the danger area is reached

• Do not post signs near visually cluttered areas

5. Determine sign type, color, size & shape.

Ask yourself- What type of sign best suits the area and message?

... Wall sign? Floor sign? Standing sign?

• Keep your signs clean and highly visible.
