Convergent Plate Boundaries

• Slabs of oceanic crust are pushed down into the mantel.

• As a slab sinks deeper into the mantel, the increase in temperature and pressure drives water from the oceanic crust.

Ocean- Ocean

• Volcanism at a convergent plate where one oceanic slab descends beneath another results in the formation of a chain of volcanoes on the ocean floor.

Ocean- Continent

• Volcanism associated with the convergent plate boundaries may also develop where slabs of oceanic lithosphere are subducted under continental lithosphere to produce a continental volcanic arc.

Intraplate igneous Activity

• Intraplate volcanism occurs within a plate, not at a plate boundary.

• Most intraplatevolcanism occurs where a mass of hotter than normal mantle material called a mantle plume rises toward the surface.
