“Men and Women for Others”
An Ordinary Man
Doing Extraordinary Things
OK, you there in the back of the room, trying to avoid eye contact with the teacher – pay attention, it’s book review time. This month’s assignment is to read and discuss among yourselves Parish Priest: Father
Michael McGivney and American Catholi-
cism by Douglas Brinkley and Julie M. Fen-ster. At the beginning of this Fraternal Year when I ascended the Grand Knight’s throne so to speak, I was fortunate enough to re-ceive a copy of the book from Margie Cuff, who urged me to read it under the not too faulty theory that if you’re going to be a Grand Knight of Rosensteel, the least you can do is learn a little about who founded the Knights of Columbus. Naturally, I took the book with the best of intentions and placed it squarely on my nightstand where it sat gathering dust for months while I futilely tried to get through my growing pile of more secular printed material. But now, having finished reading it a few weeks ago, I can willingly give it a glowing review. Mr. Brinkley and Ms. Fenster very capably show the man himself, the reason why Father McGivney became a priest, the trials and tribulations he faced as a Catholic priest in late 1800’s New England and the reasons why he believed a religious order comprised of Catholic men was such a good idea. Not to mention the reason why Chris-topher Columbus was chosen as the Order’s namesake. While turning the pages, it slowly dawned on me that Father McGivney was the most ordinary of men in that the entity he created – in this case the Knights of Columbus – was well within the capabilities of many men. But what he had – or was blessed with, if you will – was an extraordinary will to help those less fortunate than himself (and not necessarily only those of the Catholic faith, as you’ll learn from reading) and an

The Joy of Easter
After the Sabbath, at the dawn of the first day of the week, three
women came to the tomb of Jesus. They went to pay last respects to their beloved master. On their way, they were asking themselves: “Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” They did not suspect at all that they were going to be the first witnesses of the greatest event in human history, the Resurrection of Christ.
Jesus’ Resurrection is the central truth of our faith. It is the most extraordinary fact that ever happened. The Resurrection fills our hearts with joy and hope. Jesus is truly risen! He is alive! When we say this, we are not talking about a myth or a parable. He is really among us!
However, how can we be certain of this? Where can we find the signs that authenti-cate that Christ is alive?
We can find an answer to this question in the Gospel. Looking to what happened to Mary Magdalene, Mary, mother of James, and Salome, we can understand what allows us to be certain about the Resurrection.
They went to the tomb to anoint a dead person. Their hope had finished with Jesus’ last breath on the cross. It was all over. Now the only thing that they had to do was to mourn the dead and keep his memory alive in their remembrance.
They were completely surprised by the facts. When they arrived at the tomb, they found the stone rolled back and a mysterious young man. The stone had been moved and God had sent an angel to announce Jesus’ Resurrection to them.
The angel was the witness, someone who already knew what happened, someone who already lived surrounded by the light of the Resurrection. The angel was someone who radiated a light that did not come from him. He had witnessed something greater than himself.
In this angel, we can see the Church, all the witnesses through whom we have re-ceived the gift of faith. We can see in him all

unshakeable belief in God. Those two character traits seemed to be in short supply many years ago and, one would argue, aren’t exactly flourishing around these parts nowadays. The authors also paint a vivid picture of the hardships faced by those who professed the Catholic faith during that period of U.S. history along with views of America itself outside of religion. Through it all, Father McGivney took a long, hard look at the dire circumstances of many families, especially when ill-ness or death came to the main family breadwinner, which in nearly all cases during that time was a man. The closing passage of Chapter 12 perhaps best summarizes our Founder’s legacy, with the authors writing, “Men from different parishes were united in a Catholic society designed to help them in the Christian obligation, and the mod-ern heroism, of caring for a family, spir-itually and financially.” Does that sound like a place familiar to you? I’m hoping you think Rosensteel #2169 fits that description, or at least aspires to it, a place that Father McGivney can look upon with pride. With April come Easter and the cele-bration of our Lord and Savior’s resur-rection from the dead. Let’s continue to keep the legacy of Father McGivney alive in our hearts, minds (and wallets too…) and be grateful each day for our Rosensteel Family. Please also remem-ber to say a prayer for the many who are less fortunate than ourselves and, please, stop by the Council if you haven’t been in awhile. We’d love to see you.
Godspeed, Frank C.

Knight of the Month
When Father McGivney looks down upon Rosensteel and sees Joe Veith, he will conclude that our Council is represented by a fine example of Catholic charity in ac-tion. Please join me in congratulat-ing Joe for all he does for those who are in need.
NO breakfast on Easter Sunday.
the testimonies that help us to live our faith now.
The stone symbolizes human despair, everything that does not allow us to be happy and everything that prevents us from reaching our destiny. The stone of the tomb is the experience of death, the experience of limitation. The stone is what we cannot overcome by our efforts. It symbolizes what is impossible for us.
We can believe in Jesus’ Resurrection because we have already seen God’s ac-tion in our lives. Many stones have al-ready been rolled back. If we attentively contemplate our stories of faith, it is im-possible not to recognize the power of the action of Our Lord at certain mo-ments of our existences.
The angel and the stone are the signs through which Jesus shows us that he is alive. If we contemplate the witnesses with listening hearts and see signs of God’s action around us, then we know that Jesus is truly risen. He is alive!
Let us ask for the celebration of Easter to increase our certainty of faith and re-new our experience of joy, peace and hope. Let us ask for the courage to be bold witnesses to the Resurrection.
Happy Easter!
Fr. José

Family of the Month In addition to being an excellent role model of what a loving and longstanding marriage is within the Catholic faith, Pat and Sarah Warner are also terrific examples of giving themselves in service to our Rosensteel Family. Pat faithfully attends any and all meetings and takes excellent minutes of the riveting proceedings thereof while Sarah, a Maryknight, is one of “Al’s Gals” during Wednesday evening Bingo, helping wherever and whenever she’s asked. The Warner’s also financially support Rosen-steel in many areas and last, but certainly not least, Pat is the brain trust behind the CIF which plays a key role in ensuring the longterm financial health of these parts. Please congratulate Pat and his lovely bride, Sarah when you see them around #2169.
Squires/Roses April 2015
We are doing very well on the “Cup of Joe” charity event, nearing our goal for collections. Please take this opportuni-ty to engage in this effort. We did hold our monthly meeting in March, which was lightly attended, but we did gain three new members.
Please welcome Sara Seubert, Lily Beck and Megan Draley to our circle. Let’s plan on meeting on Monday April 27th, from 7:00 to 8:00 for April’s meeting, bring a friend. In the coming months we will be reaching out to many parishes, schools and councils to recruit more members. We have several members that have reached the age of 18 thus allowing them to become members and Maryknights. Please consider this opportunity and feel free to discuss this with myself or one of the many Maryknights.
The registration process is going well with the state, please keep the registra-
tion forms coming in. There is not an online version, therefore if you have not
received or completed your form please drop me an email with a mailing ad-
dress and I will send you the paper copy.

Our March meeting was very productive and very spiritual. After a delicious pot-luck supper we were privi-leged to have Father Ray Fecteau deliver a beautiful Lenten reflec-tion. He spoke on the Stations of the Cross, specifically the Fourth, Sixth, Eighth and Thir-teenth stations which all related to the Blessed
Mother and women in Jesus’ life. He left us with a powerful message about our role as women in the church and much on which to meditate as we approach Good Friday and the Resur-
rection. Thank you, Fr. Ray!
An update on our own Fr. Trancone’s health situation finds him at Carroll Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Cen-ter, 1150 Varnum Street, NE Washington, DC 20017. He asks for our prayers and we ask you to drop him a card as
well.
Grand Knight Cavaliere joined us briefly to thank us for
our continued support and to update us on Council activities.
Thanks to Chairs Lois Devlin and Diane Lynch for putting together a great card party. It was a great day for the more
than 100 participants and we made a tidy sum for our charity
fund in the process.
Mark your calendars for April 25th. All are invited to the Maryknight Anniversary Party which will be held at 5:30pm in the Emerald Room. Get your “little black dress” ready be-cause this year’s celebration takes the form of a cocktail party. Jeanne Berman’s husband, “Chef” Andre, will help provide yummy hors d’oeuvres and delicious cocktails will be served. Jay Cooley Jazz, a terrific band, will entertain us! Tickets are $25 and can be reserved by contacting Margie Cuff at 301.949.1715 or [email protected]. You do not have to
be a Maryknight to attend this party!
If you haven’t already, you may receive a call from Marge Fait and her nominating committee in the very near future. They are looking for a “few good women” to fill the slate of officers for the 2015-2016 year. Please thoughtfully consider running for one of these positions. The Maryknights’ future depends on all of us doing our share. The slate will be pre-
sented in April with elections to be held in May.
Our donation inventories have reached an all time low. We are especially in need of items for Adopt a Soldier and toilet-
ries, socks and underwear for our shelters.
Finally, April 13th is our next meeting. We’ll have someone speaking on the topic of Angels. Looking forward to that and
seeing you!
The Maryknights wish a Blessed and Happy Easter Season to
our Rosensteel Family.

The Maryland State Convention of the Knights of Colum-bus starts in Ocean City on May 2. Rosensteel Council has always enjoyed a favorable reception and makes a significant impression among all the delegates. A very inviting hospitality room with food and drinks will be available for everyone. You should make plans now to attend and support both our Grand Knight and our Fr. Rosensteel Council.
Have you ever read the cautionary warnings issued by AARP regarding criminal fraudulent schemes directed toward senior citizens? Every year criminals trick and deceive many elderly retired people out of money they cannot afford to lose.
These funds often are not recoverable. Please remain vigilant whenever you are approached by an unknown person, phone calls or a suspicious letter. Remember: If it sounds too good to be true, it is too good to be true. Consult with your family, a lawyer or police.
George Pelecanos. Do you recognize the name? He has written over 16 books, he is a film producer, an essayist, and the winner of numerous writing awards. He also wrote the scripts for the HBO series, The Wire, and The Treme. In his books he often uses well known sites in Silver Spring and Washington as the physical settings for the characters in his stories. He grew up in Silver Spring, attended Northwood High School and the University of Maryland. He still lives with his family here and is a parishioner of St. Sofia’s Greek Orthodox Catholic Cathedral in Washington. I believe this man needs a sponsor and an application for the Knights of Co-lumbus.
The Little Sisters of the Poor, who maintain a home for el-derly persons near the National Shrine, have asked for extra prayers during the season of Lent. Let us all pray with them. And also pray that the increased efforts in many states to legal-ize physician assisted suicide are not successful.

Dear Members,
You have read two columns in the past months under this head-
ing. I am looking for more!
We are one of, if not the, largest councils in the state! Let’s re-member why! I would like this space to contain stories, pictures, anecdotes, thoughts and musings of the people who have made Rosensteel what is today: A place we gather in friendship, faith and fraternity. It can pass on the history of the council and offer
ideas for the future success of Rosensteel.
As the Grand Knight and District Deputy remind us in their col-umns this month, new members are needed to keep the Order and Council growing and THRIVING. I believe knowing who and where we come from, the foundation of charitable activities, and especially the rich history of families and friendships that
connect us to this place is a great way to do this.
Please don’t be shy about telling your story! So many of you have been here so much longer than I have. Let’s hear about past Ocean City conventions, council picnics, beach parties, and charity balls. Talk about programs that have touched your heart or ways in which the Council has been a positive influence for you or someone else. Just email me your story or thoughts. It
will be mostly fun and sometimes emotional, but it will be great!

Brother All,
Easter Season is upon us. Jesus has risen! Truly he has. Remember, Christ has died for our salvation. Keep Christ and all others who have passed or who
are ill in your prayers.
Remember the 4 core principles of the order:
Charity - There is no better way to experience love and compas-
sion than by helping those in need, a call we answer every day.
Unity - None of us is as good as all of us. You can count on the support and encouragement of your brother Knights as you work to
make life better in your parish and community.
Fraternity - In the Knights of Columbus, we watch out for and
take care of one another.
Patriotism - The Knights remind the world that Catholics support
their nation and are amongst the greatest citizens.
How do we share these principles with people outside our council, outside our faith? How can we show others that their roots are call-ing them back to charity, service, unity and patriotism? Asking
these questions of ourselves is the start.
We are Knights. We spread the Word of Christ through our Ac-tions. Our churches are in need of new parishioners and we are in need of new members. Work to strengthen our council with new members. It is only with new members that we grow our Councils. These new brother Knights bring new ideas and energy to the Or-der Catholics and Christians are being persecuted in word and
action everywhere. We are Knights of Columbus. We are not per-
fect in all that we do, we are human, but we are not afraid.
My last thought: “For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of men.” 2 Corin-
thians
Lady Debbie and I wish you a happy and Joyous Easter Season.
Vivat Jesus,
Tom Kelly
