Description
# 2
database representation of a way or course through which water flows or an area covered by water
represents water body like river, canal, lake, sea, ocean, water body covered with ice
swimming pools, marshes, swamps and glaciers are not considered as Water Element
No overlap with land cover features(forest & semi natural area)
Standard names to be captured
www.rmsi.com
Data Model : Area or Line Representation
#3
a line representing the center line of a river or canal. Islands that have to be captured according to General Capturing Rules of Islands, and main land will be separated only by a line.

General Capturing Rules
Water element shall be captured for each water body permanently or semi-permanently covered with water with a width of 10 meters or more or with a surface of 10 000 m² or more or if it has a special significance
shall not be captured for the underground part of a waterway except for a river flowing in a tunnel under a road.
Dividing line between bounding Water Elements
- Water element at join of waterways
#4
waterway with one name is one closed area, the other waterway stops where the two rivers join
www.rmsi.com
General Capturing Rules
-where inland water meets the sea or ocean, the dividing line between those two different Water Elements will be very rough and based on names. Generally the dividing line will be as straight as possible.

-In case a river flows in and out a lake and the river has a higher display class than the lake, a part of the lake that connects the in-flowing river and the outgoing river should be considered as part of the river. It will be represented by a Water Element different from the Water Element(s) representing the other part(s) of the lake.
Standard Name for Water Element of the part of the lake which connects the in-flowing river and the outgoing river should be the same as the Standard Name for Water Element of the river

General Capturing Rules

General Capturing Rules
-Water Element does not stop at a tributary not belonging to General Capturing Rules
- Water Element stops where water can not flow through e.g. at dams.

Water Center Line
database representation of the center line of a river or a canal in a generalized way
Water Center Lines represent only linear water bodies (rivers, canals)
Line Feature Can have a Standard Name and Alternate names. In case a river
has a different name at its mouth, Standard Name for Water Center Line will always be the name that is given in general to the river from its spring till its mouth
-e.g. Rhône becomes Grand Rhône at its mouth, Standard Name for Water Center Line will be Rhône for the whole extent of the river
Water Center Line mandatory has Water Display Class (unique value)
Water Center Line is no transportation element

Main/Minor arm ?
#11
Distinction into main and minor arm can be based on the width, the shipping lane, the name,…. Within river deltas or river mouths, the main arm will generally correspond with the shipping laneWater Center Line represents the main river arm. Minor river arms are not taken into account. Only in case it is not clear which arm is the main river arm, Water Center Line shall be captured for both arms

General Capturing Rules-Water Center Line
Water Center Line shall be captured for each river or canal from the moment the width becomes 10m or more that belongs to the first class of Water Display Class
shall not be captured for harbor basins and river ports and underground part of a waterway except for a river flowing in a
tunnel under a road
Harbor basins : enclosed area of a river or harbor designed so that the water level remains unaffected by tidal changes.

Australia-Area Capturing Rules
Water Center Line shall be captured according to General Capturing Rules.
Additionally, Water Center Line shall be captured for each area permanently or semi-permanently covered with water with a width of 10 meters or more or if it has a special significance, and which belongs to the second, third, fourth and fifth Water Display Class.
Water Center Line shall be captured for each arm of a river.

Water Display Class
database representation of a classification of water bodies based on the importance of the role that a water body has with respect to its function as a landmark
Mandatory and unique attribute of Water Element and Water Center Line
#16
www.rmsi.com
Classification of Water Display Class
First Class (highest):
-Generally ,National and international water bodies
Second Class:
- Generally ,Regional water bodies
Third Class:
- Generally , State-wide water bodies
Fourth Class:
- Generally ,Multi-county, county and metropolitan water bodies with name
Fifth Class (lowest):- Generally , Multi-county, county and metropolitan water bodies depicted, which are not identified by a name.

Capturing Rules-Water Display Class
Water Display Class 1 for seas and oceans If a certain water body belongs to more than one class, always the
highest Water Display Class shall be assigned to the respective Water Element or Water Center Line
Water Display Class of one and the same river doesn’t change
- A chain of water (i.e. a canal or a river) identified by one name must have one Water Display Class
-Water Display Class does not decrease going upstream a certain river or canal• e.g. the river that joins the sea or ocean will have a certain Water Display Class, the rivers
joining this river will have a lower or in some cases the same Water Display Class than the first mentioned river and so on.

Capturing Rules-Water Display Class
Water Display Class where a lake is involved :a river flows in and out a lake
- CASE 1) River has a higher class than the lake• Water Display Class of the part of the lake which connects the in-flowing river and the outgoing river
should be the same as the Water Display Class of the river
- CASE 2) LAKE has a higher class than the river• the complete lake should get only one Water Display Class
