Location; US RT. 60 W for 5.1 miles to Burley Hollow Road (715 ), Turn left on Burley Hollow Road and go .5 miles to
Shady Mountain Road on the right. Turn right onto Shady Mountain Road and go .4 miles to mailbox # 240 on the right.
Continue on Shady Mountain Road until you get to the second metal gate on the right. Go through the gate and follow the
trail for .6 miles. At this point you will need to walk to the top of the ridge on your right. As you leave the flat area, you
can see the remains of the Tinsley house to your left. The chimney still stands. At an earlier time this area was quite
populated and there are many remains of old dwellings. The cemetery is among large trees and the area is clear of
vegetation. Two stones are down and there are 2-3 metal funeral markers becoming illegible. There are also several
fieldstone markers and the cemetery shows evidence of being fenced at one time.

there. Maintained.
The property was once owned by Cornelius Thomas, then Roderick McCulloch and the Waugh family. Waughs Ferry was
nearby. Verdant Vale was the name of McCulloch’s plantation.
Note: The purpose of this entry is to correct data in the referenced edition and to combine two cemeteries, Verdant Vale
and Waugh on the James, which are the same graveyards. Furthermore, as stated in the reference edition, Roderick
McCulloch was not a minister and did not baptize George Washington. The father of Roderick, the Reverend Roderick
McCulloch Sr., of Westmoreland County, baptized George Washington. Roderick, Jr., was employed by the Cabell family
as a teacher. He married one of his students, Elizabeth Horsley and settled in Amherst County.
