Summary All temperature readings are in normal range We were able to test only the primary source of power. Secondary was unavailable do to usage. All Gear was visually inspected for defects
Power Photo:
ATS Summery
The ATS that feeds the Panel TCGSDP appears to be in good functional condition.
Power Quality Photo: We placed the three phase watt meter on this panel to get an idea of the power
quality that is coming into the building. This would also give us an idea of the condition of the UPS units.
During this Photo UPS South was powered on with no load. Note that the Current or ‘I’ reading has some
‘Flat Topping’ of the sine wave. This is common with the old UPS units as they relied heavily on Pulse
Width Modulation like the older VFD’s.
Note that the current wave form for A Phase shows more flat topping then the other two phases. A phase
would fail on the inverter 4 hours later.
Thermal Image: All Terminations were within limits for Temperature.
Section II Panel TCGSDP
Panel TCGSDP Summery Thermal Imagery: All Terminations were within limits of temperature. At the conclusion of the testing we arranged the breakers to bypass the UPS units.
Section III Powerware 375 UPS North w/ Bypass
UPS North External Bypass Panel: Thermal Imagery: All readings were within Normal Temperature. Kirk Key Interlock is missing from MIB Breaker. This will allow Utility power to be thrown in with UPS Output power (>30 degrees out of phase) and that could be very dangerous as it would be equivalent to a 3Phase 480 volt short.

Powerware 375 UPS South w/ Bypass
UPS South External Bypass Panel: Thermal Imagery: All readings were within Normal Temperature. Kirk Key Interlock is missing from MIB Breaker. This will allow Utility power to be thrown in with UPS Output power (>30 degrees out of phase) and that could be very dangerous as it would be equivalent to a 3Phase 480 volt short.

Cabinet 1:
Batteries in cabinets 1 and 2 have been left off for to long to be considered reliable
enough for maintaining a load for any length of time. The cut off from the manufacturere
for Impedance is 4.0 Gig Ohms and all of these batteries exceed that limit.
Cabinet 2:
Cabinet 3:
The batteries in cabinets 3 and 4 have been left without a charge for to long to recover or
even get a goot test read off of.
Summery:
Summary of UPS South diagnostics:
UPS > Batteries > Cabinets 1 & 2 > Total of 80 batteries: The batteries in this unit are a Generic manufacture and are dated 12/2007. These show a propensity to maintain a charge albeit week.
UPS > Batteries > Cabinets 3 & 4 > these cabinets were disconnected in December of 2007. The Batteries were left behind in the cabinets and will need to be disposed of at some point. Some batteries are showing signs of leaking acid at the terminals.
UPS > Controls: The UPS was found with the main control circuit breaker in the on
position however the unit was off. Battery disconnects switches S2 & S3 were also in the closed position. The Mimic Panel fired up on day two of testing but was so burned in that it could hardly be made out (see photo above - yes it is on).
UPS > Rectifier board: The 3phase bridge rectifier was in good condition and performed adequately. Rectifier CB1 had been left in the closed position.
UPS > Inverter boards: The 3phase inverter boards fired up when the control power was
first reset. The unit functioned properly and went into normal mode. Sometime between 1530 and 0800 the next day the unit failed out at the inverter board. Both 800A SCR fuses were blown on the A phase inverter bus. We replaced the fuses on the A phase using fuses out of the UPS North (Inverter A Phase in photo above). The issue appears to be a bas sequencing board for the inverter. No further tests were completed without further authorization.
UPS Inverter Board Continued:
Scope Reading A: A Phase Inverter at 0 volts before fuse replacement. Scope Reading B: B Phase Inverter at 544 volts per specification for equipment.
Scope Reading A: A Phase After fuse Replacement > During Capacitor Discharge state. Scope Reading B: B Phase during Capacitor discharge state.
A Phase Sequencing Board. Note the Scorch mark in the center of the board around the Resistor.
Further attempts were not made for Start Up or Repairs as permissions would need to be given to proceed with board repairs and maintenance (We are also looking for spare parts for this model of UPS.
UPS > Summery: Between the batteries needing replacement, The Mimic Panel being next to useless, and the boards that will need to be replaced, I would recommend replacement of the UPS Unit as a whole. Even with reconditioning due to the age of the unit (appears to be between 1992 and 1996 when the building was completed) I would have a hard time believing in the reliability of this unit. Spare OEM parts for this unit appear to be nonexistent (I am looking actively for any available) and that would be another good reason not to rely on this.
