local residents.
"We are fortunate to have the volunteer efforts of Andy Bellina, a professional
engineer with the DEP and whose expertise is in storm water management
and environmentally friendly, green initiatives," Parisi said. "Andy and histeam will work with all of our departments, personnel, boards and corporate
citizens to enhance our environmental awareness."
As for public safety, the mayor also mentioned the "revitalization of the
Ambulance Corps" and the extensive training of the Police Department. Over
the past year, the Englewood Cliffs Police Department has been conducting
additional life-saving drills to prepare for a variety of emergency
circumstances.
Finally, one of the biggest challenges the Borough faced in 2008 was the
ordered tax re-evaluation.
"I am excited to share with you that our plan is already in progress and we
are requesting a reassessment of our properties," Parisi said. "The resolution

to begin this challenge was approved last November and our tax appeal
attorney has already begun the process."
Although the Borough had a successful year on many levels, the current
financial status of the country has brought about a few major changes for
2009.
The mayor stated that he is going to institute a "salary freeze for all
departments and professionals and set up a committee to study and re-
evaluate the compensations structure" of employees.
He is also looking to eliminate the Jerry Frank ordinance and replace it with
traditional disability insurance. In addition, a restructuring of the Police
Department to reduce costs is planned.
With the new year comes two new councilmen, Republicans Robert Agresta
and Eric Petrone. Replacing Councilwomen Patricia Drimones and Lynn Norton,
the mayor said that the newcomers had "large shoes to fill."
"Now that the election season has ended, I have resolved to put partisan
politics aside," Agresta noted. "Among this council, we will often find common
ground and even a consensus. On the other hand we will also disagree at
times. We should embrace the disagreement."
"A lot of people thought we were crazy running as Republicans in a Democratic
county, state, a predominantly Democratic region and judging by this past
presidential election, a pretty left -leaning country," added Petrone. "But we
worked hard, we stuck to our message and we just trusted in the process.
Now my main goal as councilman is to work with whoever has this
communitys best interest in mind."
Mayor Parisi concluded by promising to give 110 percent of himself and
requiring the council to do the same.
"I am constantly telling our municipal staff that we are a service-oriented
community," said Parisi. "And as your mayor, I am at your service."
