And its ill effect
GROUP 6B (DR. AROKIA BABU)
“ Pesticide is any substance or its mixture that is used for preventing, destroying or
controlling any pest, which includes vectors of human or animal disease as well as
unwanted species of plants or animals that
causes harm.”
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)
CLASSIFICATION:
Insecticides Herbicides Rodenticides Fungicides
CLASSIFICATION:
Insecticides Herbicides Rodenticides Fungicides………..
A pesticide must be lethal to the targeted pests, but not to man.
On the basis of pest control, insecticide ( against insect pest), herbicides (killing and controlling weeds) while rodenticide (prevent, destroy, repel or mitigate rodents).
In terms of chemical composition:o Insecticides: Anthranilic diamide,
carbamate, pyrethroids, organochloride, organophospate and neonicotinoid
o Herbicide: Anilide o Rodenticide: 4-Hydroxycoumarins
FACTS ABOUT PESTICIDE
Did you know that only 5% of
pesticides sprayed actually reach
their target? And the rest of it go to:-
The food we eat
The water we drink
The air we breath
So, how do they act on our body??

Pesticide Acute toxicity --- Classification of WHO
CLASS IA is extremely hazardous and demarcated in red
CLASS IB is highly hazardous and symbolized by an yellow triangle
CLASS II is moderately hazardous and marked by a blue triangle
CLASS III is slightly hazardous
CLASS IV is unlikely to cause acute hazard in normal use
Pesticide exposures include inhalation, ingestion, skin contact, or across the placenta.
Similar doses of different pesticides can have varyingeffects to humans.
Pesticide has its ups and
downs……
They can pose severe health and environmental problems. These includes
Neurotoxicity, Renal Toxicity, Respiratory Toxicity, Immunotoxicity, Reproductive Toxicity, Teratogenicity, Genotoxicity And Carcinogenicity.
Mgt of
pesticide contact
Symptoms: Monitored by antidote.
Clothes: Removed
and washed separately.
Skin: Wash with soap and
water.
Eyes: Wash with
copious amounts of
water.

1. DEATH-- Pesticides have been associated
with a number of illnesses.
2. RISK-- Fleming et al (2003) discovered that
farmers were at greater risk of accidental
mortality.3. CANCER-- Both male and female workers had higher risk of cancers of the nervous, lymphatic
and hematopoietic systems.
