2017 ANNUAL REPORT 1
Dear Friends,
It is with great pleasure that we share this 2017 Annual Report with you, capturing a truly transformational year. Together with our partners, in 2017, we reached over 1.5 million people with screening and basic treatment – including over 115,000 sight-restoring surgeries. In addition, we supported training opportunities for 315 eye care personnel from countries across the world including Nepal, Ghana, Ethiopia, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Indonesia, Uganda and Tanzania.
Early in the year, the Himalayan Cataract Project was named one of eight semi-finalists out of 1,904 applicants - the top .5% - in the MacArthur Foundation’s 100&Change competition, for promising real and measurable progress in solving a critical problem of our time. By outlining how we will scale eye care in Ethiopia, Ghana, and Nepal over the coming five years, we created a blueprint for eliminating cataract blindness globally. Despite strong public support from the BBC and others, HCP did not advance as one of the four finalists. Nevertheless, the competition provided a major endorsement of our work and raised awareness of a global health problem that we can solve. As a result, we are aiming higher than we have ever aimed before.
Throughout the year, we continued to advance high quality eye care and restore sight at a record-setting pace, providing 30% more screenings and treatments than in 2016. We continued to train the next generation of highly skilled ophthalmologists, nurses and technicians, increasing the number of training opportunities. Highlights from our country programs include:
Nepal: Our partners at the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology examined over 580,000 patients and provided 28,632 surgeries this year.Ethiopia: Our direct care for hard to reach patients continued to increase. Ten years ago, we provided 759 surgeries, and in 2017, we supported 16,575 outreach cataract surgeries.Ghana: We established a new National Cataract Outreach Program, and HCP’s partner institutions provided care to over 100,000 outpatients, including approximately 5,500 surgeries.Bhutan: We broke ground in October on a new 17,750 square foot National Eye Hospital, with an anticipated completion date in 2019.
Millions of viewers became aware of our efforts through the lens of 60 Minutes, underscoring the impact of our work and our model. Co-founders Drs. Sanduk Ruit and Geoff Tabin were also awarded the 2017 Einstein Genius Award, as two of the top 100 visionaries in the last century.
We take great pride in our financial efficiency and accountability. We know you expect us to use your funds wisely, and we are committed to maximizing the value of every donation we receive, directing those funds where they are most needed.
We cannot thank you enough for the support you have provided to make our work possible. Your continued commitment and your tremendous generosity will change lives forever. On behalf of our board, staff, and program partners, thank you.

WHO WE HELPHimalayan Cataract Project: Restoring Sight, Changing LivesAccording to the WHO, it is estimated that 36 million people worldwide suffer from blindness – but most don’t
have to. More than half are blind due to cataracts, and close to 80% live in l low- and middle-income countries.
The Himalayan Cataract Project (HCP) brings life-changing eye care to people in underserved areas of the world
and trains local personnel to build sustainable eye care systems for the future.
In 2017, HCP and its partners provided screenings for almost 1.5 million individuals and performed over 115,000 surgeries throughout seven countries in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. We also directly supported the training of 315 ophthalmic personnel – an increase of 139% over 2016.

A Foundation for Excellence In November, construction of staff housing at the Hetauda Community Eye
Hospital commenced. These new facilities will allow more subspecialists
training at Tilganga to visit for longer periods of time, strengthening our ability
to provide long-term training opportunities for our partners.
Tilganga Leading the Way in Addressing Corneal Blindness In 2017, 759 corneas were retrieved in Nepal, 109% of their 2017 annual target
and a 22% increase over 2016. HCP has partnered with SightLife since 2011 to
strengthen the Nepal Eye Bank, implemented by Tilganga.
New Corneal Ulcer Prevention Program In partnership with SightLife, HCP established a long-term partnership that
will support the development of community health workers (CHWs) in Nepal
to diagnose and manage corneal abrasions before they escalate to corneal
blindness through the following programmatic objectives:
• Increase the number of corneal abrasions diagnosed and managed by trained CHWs
• Increase the number of patient referrals to local eye hospitals
• Decrease the number of days between ocular trauma and first report to a care provider
• Decrease the incidence of corneal abrasions that progress in corneal ulcers
• Continue HCP’s role in Nepal as a leader in addressing corneal blindness
in the country

Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) Bhutan’s 2017 Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) survey began in December. Once
completed, Bhutan will have up-to-date data on visual impairment and blindness, which will help the
World Health Organization (WHO) and Bhutan’s Ministry of Health determine the country’s performance
as compared to the WHO Global Action Plan, 2014-2019. The results will be comparable with the 2009
RAAB survey data. Moreover, it will also show the trend of blindness and impact of ongoing eye care
service delivery in Bhutan.

Capacity Building In February, HCP Board Member, Dr. Matt Oliva
spent one week at Rumah Sakit Umum Pusat (RSUP),
Dr. Sardjito Eye Hospital and Dr. Yap Eye Hospital in
Indonesia followed by one week in Myanmar at Yangon
Eye Hospital, conducting cornea subspecialty training
workshops.
Through this unique training opportunity, Dr. Oliva
assisted local ophthalmologists in performing corneal
transplants; delivered lectures on corneal surgical
techniques; conducted wet lab skills-based training
with ophthalmology residents; and lectured on eye
banking. Capacity building for local eye care personnel
is the cornerstone of HCP’s approach to eliminating
needless blindness, and this type of subspecialty skills
transfer is critical in Indonesia and Myanmar where the
blindness rate is high and hundreds of thousands suffer
from corneal blindness.

Reducing the Cataract BacklogIn 2017, HCP directly supported 16,575 surgeries in out-
reach settings, including 16,153 cataract surgeries, a 42%
increase over 2016. It is estimated that a total of 70,000
cataract surgeries are performed each year in Ethiopia.
HCP partnered with 14 institutions across Ethiopia and
the Federal Ministry of Health to provide high-quality,
low-cost cataract and other subspecialty surgeries.
In collaboration with these partners, HCP worked to
expand their outreach surgical coverage providing high
quality cataract and subspecialty surgery to patients
who otherwise would have no access to eye care.

Coordinator Initiative
In January, the American Society of Cataract and
Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Foundation accepted
HCP’s proposal for the development of a distinct
Residency Program Coordinator position at the five
main teaching hospitals in Ethiopia (Menelik II, St.
Paul’s, Hawassa, Jimma and Gondar) along with the
Sinskey Eye Institute. The aim of this program is to
establish program coordinators who are responsible
for overseeing the ophthalmology residency
program within their respective hospital and ensure
the quality of didactic and clinical education,
resident selection and evaluation and patient
management, with the ultimate goal of strengthening
ophthalmology education within Ethiopia.

USAID Child Blindness Grant With support from the United States Agency for International Development
(USAID) Child Blindness program, HCP worked to improve child eye
health at Menelik II Hospital (Addis Ababa University). The grant provided
training for seven eye care professionals from Menelik II Hospital, including
subspecialty pediatric fellowship training for two ophthalmologists. The grant
also provided cataract surgery and follow-up care to 120 children who would
not have otherwise been able to access these eye care services.
Eye Bank of Ethiopia In 2017, the Eye Bank successfully collected 217 corneas for transplant. Since 2011,
HCP has been working in partnership with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health,
SightLife and Orbis International to increase efficiency of the Eye Bank and
attract more ophthalmologists to the Cornea Subspecialty.
Advocacy HCP participated in the National Eye Health Planning Workshop in March.
The meeting addressed general eye health status updates, preparation for the
second national blindness and visual impairment survey, finalization of a five year
national eye health strategic plan, cataract backlog clearance initiative and the
challenges of human resources for eye health workers.
HCP also provided support for advocacy groups within the country including the
Ophthalmological Society of Ethiopia, Ethiopian Cataract Surgeons Association,
and World Sight Day.

RESIDENCY EXCHANGES
22 HIMALAYAN CATARACT PROJECT
TRAINING
RESIDENCY SUPPORTBuilding the Next Generation of OphthalmologistsHCP supports medical residents who specialize in
the field of Ophthalmology. Residents represent the
future of eye health for their countries and are vital
to the establishment of sustainable eye care systems.
Residents learn within their training institutions from
HCP affiliated ophthalmologists who provide lectures
and hands-on surgical training often through outreach
surgical events at other implementing partner sites.
Residents also rotate at other training institutions to
gain experience in a variety of clinical and surgical
environments.
2017 ANNUAL REPORT 23
Ethiopia: HCP sponsored 40 ophthalmology residents
in Ethiopia to sit for the International Council of
Ophthalmology (ICO) Basic Science and Optics &
Refraction Exams. The ICO Examinations are the only
worldwide medical-specialty examinations. They are
independent and free of any outside influence and can
be taken in the candidate’s own country. The questions
are prepared by an international group of examiners
and set at the same standard as the highest board and
qualifying examinations anywhere. Each year, the
ICO offers examinations throughout the world to help
ophthalmologists evaluate their knowledge in the basic
science and clinical sciences related to ophthalmology.
Ghana: HCP Sponsored 13 residents from KATH
and Korle Bu to take the ICO Basic Science and
Optics & Refraction Exams. Seven residents from
Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and two
residents from Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Ghana
were awarded ophthalmic equipment kits after
successful completion of both International Council
of Ophthalmology (ICO) Basic Science and Optics and
Refractive exams.

60 MINUTES, OUT OF DARKNESSOn Sunday, April 16, 2017, CBS aired a compelling segment that featured HCP co-founders Drs. Sanduk Ruit and Geoffrey Tabin, on one of America’s most prestigious shows, 60 Minutes. Program host Bill Whitaker and a team of filmmakers joined Ruit and Tabin during a cataract outreach event at a hospital in Taunggyi, Myanmar. During the four-day event, the two surgeons and their team provided training for 30 local ophthalmologists and performed 700 cataract surgeries.

IN MEMORY OF PEGGY FOSSETTHCP LOST A DEAR FRIEND WHEN PEGGY FOSSETT PASSED AWAY ON
OCTOBER 17, 2017 AT THE AGE OF 73. Peggy was the co-founder and long-time director
of the Peggy and Steve Fossett Foundation where she served as a benefactor to many
innovative and forward thinking nonprofits. Peggy was known for her sharp mind, dazzling
smile and quick wit. Originally from Chicago, she was drawn to the adventurous spirit and
remarkable accomplishments of HCP co-founders Drs. Geoff Tabin and Sanduk Ruit.
Much like her late husband, renowned aviator and expeditionist Steve Fossett, Peggy
willfully supported daring ventures to bring out the best in people. The Fossetts made their
first gift to HCP in 2001, and over their lives contributed over $200,000 to our work.
HCP is deeply indebted to Peggy for her generosity and long-term commitment to our work
that changed countless lives. Her legacy will live on for years to come. Thank you.
