Why Sustainable Mobility?
Since 1989 CEE has lowered its CO2 in every area Except TRANSPORT
73 % of the population lives in urban areas
73% (2005) to 78.0% in 2025
…and then there are concerns about Climate Change
The automobile is NOT your friend
91% of Copenhageners cycle because it is fastest
Cars are destroying our streets
73 % of the population of CEE lives in urban areas
73% (2005) to 78.0% in 2025
Without great streets you don’t have great cities
Greenways and Sustainable Mobility
Daily mobility On average, people make 3 trips per day,
spending 1 hour travelling
Only 1 in 5 trips is work-related
5 out of 6 trips begin or end at home
10% of car trips are not further than 1km
30% not further than 3km
50% not further than 5km

Beyond sport and leisure
Transportation Paradigm Shift
Old Paradigm New Paradigm• Large area planning
• Arterials
• Access to shopping centers
• Retail market area - large
• Single family bedroom communities
• Big roads, wide intersections, and parking lots
• Big solutions (interstates/bypasses)
• Standards-based (Green Book)
• Performance is about transport
• Small area planning
• Boulevards
• Access to corner markets
• Retail Market area - small
• Mixed residential/office/services with local businesses
• Bike paths, sidewalks, narrow streets, and transit
• Small solutions (road connectivity, context sensitivity)
• Place-based
• Performance is about access and sense of place
Greenways are sustainable mobilitySoon the choice will not be between your car or your bike, but between your car or your future
