December 21, 2012. The End of the World or a New Beginning?

Local artist Alan Rogerson says that 12-21-12 will be “The End of the World.” For someone, just as every day is, but it’s really just the end of the Mayan Calendar...or is it?

Alan Rogerson is similar to a closet archaeologist, except that he has no intention of doing this to his closet. “Sitting there with nothing better to do one day, I pulled a paint chip off the bathroom wall and it damn near ripped up to the ceiling!” he

exclaimed. “My landlady said I could do ‘anything’ to the bathroom, so The Temple was born,” he said with an evil-sounding laugh.

It grew from there, as Alan excavated his extensive Pre-Columbian library. “I would turn the page and make a major discovery! I feel like I AM Indiana Jones, every morning as I drink my coffee and read ‘ology’ on my Mayan throne,” he laughs. For the first year and a half that Alan spent “ruining” his bathroom, he was a renter.

The bathroom was meant to convey a gallery of ideas for secret or theme rooms which he could custom create for each client. These rooms are able to be a place to show off to others, or simply be kept as well-hidden secrets.

Back by popular demand, the Zoppé Italian Family Circus returns to Chandler December 26 - January 5! Last season audiences were charmed and dazzled by this Old-World family circus and they can expect the same this season with new acts and audience favorites!

If you’ve never been to see the show, the Zoppé Italian Family Circus is reminiscent of the intimate one-ring European family circuses of the last century. The inside of the tent is very colorful with strings of lights and festive Italian music playing in the background.This magnificent show is propelled by a central story featuring acrobatic feats, equestrian showmanship, canine capers, clowning and plenty of audience participation. At the end of the show, performers position themselves outside of the tent and thank patrons for coming, shake hands and take pictures.

Giovanni Zoppe, the sixth-generation circus performer who plays Nino The Clown, says the show aims higher than the high–concept, high-dollar cirque shows.

“Nobody knows what real circus is,” said the show’s front man and lead clown, Giovanni Zoppé, 45. “I’m not going to say we’re better than a Cirque du Soleil show at all. It’s a wonderful, wonderful thing. But it’s not circus. When a kid imagines a circus, this is what they think of. It’s exactly the way it’s supposed to be. It’s like the circus was 100 years ago.”

Or, more precisely, as it was 170 years ago, in 1842, when a French clown named Napoline Zoppé met a ballerina, Ermenegilda, in Hungary, and they ran away to Venice. They were Giovanni’s great great-grandparents.

The Family Business, 170 Years Under the Big Top!Cecil B. DeMille brought Giovanni’s father Alberto Zoppéhere from Italy. Alberto appeared in “The Greatest Show on Earth,” Mr. DeMille’s Oscar-winning film, and rose in circus lore with his signature act: a backwards, flat somersault - his torso straight as a pole, not tucked into a ball - off the back of a running horse onto the back of a second running horse.

He met his wife, then Sandra Kayler, in the early 1960’s on the road. “They asked for volunteers from the audience,” Sandra recalled. “No one would volunteer for it, and I felt bad, so I volunteered. He was 43. I was 17.” They married and had three children. Alberto passed away in 2009 leaving Giovanni as the patriarch of the family business.

Twenty-two years ago, it almost fell apart. Giovanni was 30 feet from the ground, spinning end-over-end while standing on a trapeze, a highlight of his clown act. “I went outside the circle of centrifugal force. I came down headfirst. I remember falling, but I don’t remember much after that.”

His mother said he landed in a fetal position in the sawdust of the ring and stopped moving. “I dream about it,” she said, still clearly shaken by the memory.

He spent four days in a coma and awoke incoherent and listing to his right. But Giovanni recovered and again put on the costume of Nino the Clown and returned to the ring on the one-year anniversary of his accident.

Hello Dolly! January 11 – February 17, 2013

Arizona Broadway Theatre (ABT) is proud to announce the opening of Hello Dolly! on January 11, 2013; on stage through February 17. Hello Dolly! marks the Theatre’s 56th Mainstage production since opening its doors in November of 2005.

Based on the play “The Matchmaker” by Thornton Wilder, Hello Dolly! was first produced on Broadway by David Merrick in 1964, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical along with nine other awards. The show has become one of the most enduring musical theatre hits, enjoying three Broadway revivals and international success. It was also made into a 1969 film starring Barbra Streisand that was nominated for seven Academy

Awards. Hello Dolly! tells the story of the charming widow and beloved matchmaker Dolly Levi and includes a number of memorable songs, including “Put On Your Sunday Clothes,”“It Takes a Woman,”“Before the Parade Passes By,” and the title song,“Hello Dolly!”

Returning to the ABT stage for this production are three audience favorites: Morgan Springer as Dolly Levi, Kurtis W. Overby as Cornelius Hackl, and James Rio as Horace Vandergelder. Award winning Director/Choreographer Michael Susko (Choreography/Singin’ in the Rain ’11 and Director/Disney’s Tarzan‘12) also returns in the dual role of Director/Choreographer.

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present the Late Nite Catechism comedies for a limited engagement starting Jan. 12. Returning by popular demand, the original Late Nite Catechism will run through April 27 on most Saturdays at 2 p.m., with the sequel, Late Nite Catechism III: ’Til Death Do Us Part, performed on Saturdays at 8 p.m. Spontaneous, witty and fun, Late Nite Catechism is an interactive show starring Patti Hannon as tart-tongued Sister. Ruling her classroom with an iron fist, she teaches her students – who happen to be the audience – everything she knows about sins and saints while doling out rewards and reprimands with lightning speed.

In Late Nite Catechism III: ’Til Death Do Us Part, Sister offers up even more, including the latest doctrine fresh off the Web, some hilarious lessons about love and marriage and her own outrageous ‘newlywed’ game. Each Late Nite Catechism performance is unique and will appeal to people of all ages and faiths. Late Nite Catechism debuted at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts in June 2000 and was an overnight sensation, eventually becoming the longest-running theatrical production in Arizona. Its other popular sequels have included Late Nite Catechism II: Sometimes We Feel Guilty Because We Are Guilty and Sister’s Christmas Catechism: The Mystery of the Magi’s Gold. Originally a Chicago actor, Hannon has performed the role of Sister in all of the Scottsdale productions. She was named “The Best Habit in Town” by Phoenix Magazine and earned an AriZoni Award for Late Nite’s longevity. The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away 3D’

Two young people journey through the dreamlike worlds of Cirque du Soleil to find each other. (NR - 97 minutes)

Stan:Thoroughly enjoying both live show presentations of ‘Kooza’ in July 2012 and ‘Dralion’ a few week’s ago, this screen presentation by executive producer James Cameron(Avatar) and writer/director Andrew Adamson (Narnia films), present an effective use of 3D which is still going through the fad phase of over use in a lot of movies. Aptly capturing the skill and wonder of a ‘Cirque du Soleil’ experience while telling a story with minimal dialogue and body language telling the story of two people (Erica Linz and Igor Zaripov) finding love, and as a gymnast while in school ‘back in the day’, the expertise of the performing troupe live or on screen

is an experience not to be missed. (Grade: B)

Joseph: James Cameron really ought to focus on his follow-ups to “Avatar” and stop wasting his time and talent serving as executive producer for 3D spectacles like “Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away 3D.” Director Andrew Adamson’s new motion picture that brings several pieces of the popular entertainment company’s shows to the big screen features a few mesmerizing moments, such as those from “Love” set to Beatles songs. However, watching said shows in a movie theater does not compare to seeing them in real life. After all, having grown accustomed to Hollywood’s special effects, one cannot fully appreciate the performers’ risky routines. (Grade: D)

‘Django Unchained’

Jamie Foxx plays a slave-turned-bounty hunter who, with the help of his mentor (Christoph Waltz), sets out to rescue his wife (Kerry Washington) from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio). (R – 165 minutes)

Stan: Tackling that could be touchy subject matter relating to ‘persons of color’, writer/director Quentin Tarantino, who’s work I’ve continuously admired throughout the years, cleverly softens the indignities of that period in US history with humor, while presenting a poignant story of love, and his usual ‘Tarantino-esque style of filmmaking’with ‘ultra-violent action’, is an exciting 2 hour treat with a stellar performance by Leonardo DiCaprio garnering one of my Best Supporting Actors for my ‘Best Movies of 2012. (Grade: A-)

Joseph: “Django Unchained” is really raw, extremely edgy and entertaining in an all-encompassing kind of way. But then, honestly, did anyone truly expect anything less from writer/director Quentin Tarantino? The constantly groundbreaking filmmaker’s latest motion picture – which is best described as a grindhouse western – is a bloody blast (literally) from beginning to end, featuring audacious action and lionhearted laughs at each and every turn. Moreover, it includes some of the year’s positively finest performances – especially from actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Christoph Waltz who essentially switch characters and succeed in playing against type with sincerely spectacular results. (Grade: A)

‘The Guilt Trip’

Seth Rogen plays an inventor who is goaded into bringing his mother (Barbra Streisand) along on a road trip as he tries to sell his invention. Across 3,000 miles, he is constantly aggravated by her antics. But over time he comes to realize that their lives have more in common than he originally thought. (PG-13 – 95 minutes)

Sworks. The chemistry between the veteran entertainer and modern day comedian couldn’t have been more natural. The story, supposedly based on true events is fun to watch. Even the more ludicrous moments such as Streisand’s character deciding to devour a steak the size of Texas itself were hilariously funny and actually took place on a trip the film’s writer took with his own mother. Audiences of all walks of life should be able to connect with the loving, yet strained relationship between the on-screen mother and son. This is a perfect movie to release some of that holiday stress. (Grade: B+)

Joseph: “The Guilt Trip” takes its viewers on an enjoyable little journey but it only occasionally hits on sincere sentiments with which mothers or their sons can relate. Most moments in the movie feel forced, suggesting that screenwriter Dan Fogelman was satisfied with creating a broad, all-encompassing comedy that merely skims the surface of its subject than the kind that digs deeper and therefore has more meaning. However, that and star Barbra Streisand’s nails-on-a-chalkboard performance aside, director Anne Fletcher’s flick has enough laughs and heart to afford each member of the audience both a fun time and a renewed appreciation for their own well-meaning mom. (Grade: C)

‘The Impossible’

Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor play parents who, with their three sons, are relaxing around a pool during a winter vacation in Thailand when a terrifying roar rises up from the center of the earth and a huge wall of black water races toward them. (PG-13 – 107 minutes)

Stan: An emotionally stirring film of courage and the fortitude of the human spirit to survive the seemingly impossible challenges that nature

can unmercifully unleash on planet Earth from time to time. Featuring breathtaking special effects providing an up-close and personal view under the sure hand of director Juan Antonio Bayona, who guided the cast of Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor and young actor Tom Holland as one son who delivers a performance well above his young age. Add ‘The Impossible’ to your ‘must see’ list of 2012 movies. (Grade: A-)

Randy: Rarely is a movie so powerful that you get goose bumps. This is one of those films. Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor each turn in their own powerful performance, only to be outdone by their younger co-stars. Noteworthy is the performance by Tom Holland who steals the show. The Tsunami was a tragedy of epic proportions and there are more than likely thousands of similar stories to be told. The Academy should recognize these performances come nomination time. (Grade: A-)

Joseph: “The Impossible” is one of the most emotionally electrifying cinematic experiences of 2012. Director Juan Antonio Bayona has crafted a motion picture that is extremely difficult to witness yet, strangely, rewards those who brave the uncomfortable waters with a renewed sense of spirituality and a heightened hope that the tides can turn even in the seemingly grimmest of circumstances. Whether it is dragging you around like a rag-doll to demonstrate the intense torment of this true tragedy or sending you to the edge of your seat in response to narrowly missed encounters, this movie will deeply and permanently affect you. (Grade: A)

‘Jack Reacher’*

Tom Cruise plays a homicide investigator who digs deeper into a case involving a trained military sniper who shot five random victims.

‘Les Misérables’

Hugh Jackman plays ex-prisoner, hunted for decades by a ruthless policeman (Russell Crowe) after he breaks parole. When he agrees to care for a factory worker’s (Anne Hathaway) young daughter (Amanda Seyfried), their lives change forever. (PG-13 – 157 minutes)

Stan: The classic story by author Victor Hugo, spanning more than 75 years and over 18 film presentations and one of the ‘staples’ of theater presentations, has its latest screen presentation by Oscar® winning director Tom Hooper for 2010s ‘The King’s Speech’. I recently watched the 1935 and 1952 versions during a TCM cable channel marathon, which presented the story in straight dramatic form. This latest entry in basic musical form, smoothly transitions in and out of the songs, superior production design capturing the feel of the time while presenting the social, economic, and penal conditions of 19th Century France and one man’s quest to rise above his conditions. If there were an Oscar® for best ensemble acting, this film is a sure win. (Grade: A-)

Randy: It seems every year Hollywood studios take a successful musical and turns it into a major motion picture. Like most films in the genre, this isn’t the first time the studios have taken a crack at the story. But, this may be one of the finest adaptations. The cinematography, score, set design and acting is all top-notch. Seeing some of your favorite stars belt out classic tunes is a plus. Anne Hathaway delivers the most emotionally effective performance of the year as she sings one of the musical’s most famous numbers. (Grade: A)

Joseph: “Les Misérables” is a sweeping cinematic spectacle that, despite its distinctly depressing themes, leaves viewers feeling rejuvenated, uplifted and ready to take on the world. Director Tom Hooper has created a massive movie musical – make that an enormous entertainment extravaganza – that is unlike anything else you have ever seen on the big screen. And somehow, be it the grandeur of it all or the plethora of passionate performances that draw you deep into the drama, the fact that this story plays out entirely through song is a curiously camouflaged quality as the audience becomes absolutely absorbed by this fantastic film. (Grade: A)

‘Parental Guidance’*

Billy Crystal and Bette Midler play people who agree to look after their three grandkids when their type-A helicopter parents (Tom Everett Scott and Marisa Tomei) need to leave town for work. Problems arise when the kids’ 21st-century behaviors collide with the grandparents’ old-school methods. (PG - 104 minutes)

who, having been put in charge of his young son, leaves Belgium to live with his sister and her husband in Antibes. His bond with a killer whale trainer (Marion Cotillard) grows deeper after she suffers a horrible accident. (R - 118 minutes)

Randy: While the film features a strong and emotional story, the performances are really what stand out. Marion Cotillard is one of our generation’s finest actresses and she does not disappoint. Cotillard is a sure fire contender for a Best Actress Oscar nomination. Also noteworthy is the performance of her male co-star, Matthias Schoenaerts. Easily one of my favorite foreign language films of the year. (Grade: A-)

Joseph: “Rust and Bone” appears to have everything going for it - a pair of greatly gifted actors in Matthias Schoenaerts and Marion Cotillard, a dramatically devastating plot point on which it can hang its hat and some CGI to make it all that much more believable. However, writer/director Jacques Audiard’s French import injects so much misery into its two characters’ lives that the film is on the fringe of farce - especially given the impossibly favorable outcomes of certain scary scenes and its unwarrantedly happy ending. Audiard should have focused solely on Cotillard’s character’s struggle to

emotionally overcome the loss of her legs. (Grade: D)

‘Save the Date’

Lizzy Caplan plays a woman who begins to confront her shortcomings after she rejects her boyfriend’s (Geoffrey Arend) hasty proposal and soon finds herself in a rebound romance. Meanwhile, her sister (Alison Brie) is immersed in the details of her wedding. (R - 98 minutes)

Joseph: On the downside, writer/director Michael Mohan’s new dramedy “Save the Date” is an utterly unfocused flick with a collection of characters that lack the color required to carry even a 30-minute sitcom much less a feature-length film. However, on the upside, you can safely free up a 2-hour block in your appointment book. Having said that, it is still an unfortunate shame that the motion picture is not better considering its two tremendously talented leading ladies - Lizzy Caplan and “Community’s”Alison Brie - of whom the project is undeserving. Even they cannot make a movie this generic engrossing. (Grade: D)

‘This is 40’

Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann plays a man and wife who, upon turning 40 years old, must figure out how to forgive, forget and enjoy the rest of their lives – before they kill each other. (R – 134 minutes)

Stan: Another entry in the milieu of films presented with insight into couples adjusting, or rather re-adjusting to the personality changes that we all go through as we age and experience life.‘This is 40’ presents 40 year olds making that adjustment, which by the way my two oldest children are coping. Just as the recent ‘Hope Springs’ starring Meryl

Streep and Tommy Lee Jones as the couple with the theme of 60 years olds adjusting and re-adjusting which is my generation, lessons and insight, no matter the age focus of the film, is always a plus when it comes to living life. (Grade: C+)

Randy: Judd Apatow’s films are always 20 minutes too long, and this one is no different. That being said, the other two hours deliver non-stop laughter. Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann are perfectly cast and play off each other well. Apatow’s real daughters play the kids in the film and promise to be future comedians. Sure, their dad was writing lines for them, but they deliver them like pros. Whether you are in your 40’s, past that stage in your life or are nearing that age (like myself), you should find humor from Apatow’s entertaining comedy. (Grade: B+)

Joseph: Anyone who is nearing a milestone age – whether it be 30, 40 or what have you – will relate to the simple theme of growing older (and all of the things that come with it) in “This is 40.” Writer/director Judd Apatow deals with that theme in such as way that is both brutally honest and comfortably compassionate, which has become the filmmaker’s forte. However, his new spinoff of “Knocked Up” feels much closer in tone to “Funny People” than “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” aiming for drama over comedy. Moreover, the film features too much bickering and not enough narrative. (Grade: C)

The Card Counting MythWhen most players here the term “Card Counter” they think of a blackjack super hero who can defeat the casinos anytime they play and the one who strikes terror and fear into all casinos.

Whenever players see someone walk away a big winner, they usually say, “He must be a card counter.”

On top of that, most players believe that card counting is illegal, it’s not. Counters use the same information that all other players have available to them, just in a different way. The Casino, just like any other business does have the right to refuse service to anyone, so they can tell a player that they are no longer welcome to play blackjack if they believe that they count cards. WHAT IS CARD COUNTING? Card counting is how highly skilled blackjack players gain a mathematical advantage over the casino. A card counter keeps mental track of the high and low cards. High cards are any card that counts 10 or 11 - low cards 2-6.

As the cards are played the counter will tally these cards and knows if there is a surplus or shortage of high cards.

When there is a surplus of high cards, it is to the player’s advantage - so he will increase his bet. When there is a shortage of

high cards it is to the casinos advantage so he would bet the minimum. In addition, there is a playing strategy that has 43 changes over basic strategy that goes along with card counting. By using a betting and playing strategy along with card counting it gives the counter a long term advantage over the casino. CARD COUNTERS ALWAYS WIN! NOT TRUE - Card counting doesn’t assure a player will win, in fact I only win on average, 7 out of every 12 times I play.

What card counting does do is give the player the opportunity to bet more when the odds are in his favor. By doing this the counter will walk away with more money in the long run than a player who is not a card counter. WHAT ABOUT 6 DECK GAMES? I’ve heard players say that a counter can’t play in multiple deck games - Totally false. Here is what goes through a card counters mind. The first hand out of a six deck shoe with six players is dealt. As the cards are dealt face up I count them in pairs then finally the dealers up card. This gives me a running count, I then divide my running count by the number of decks left to be played which gives me a true count. Then I look at my hand and use my true count to determine the correct play given the information I have. I count the hit cards as they come out and add them to my running count. As the dealer completes his hand I again

take my running count and divide it by the number of decks left to be played and use that information to determine my bet size for the next hand.

Then the entire process starts over again as the cards are dealt for the next hand. THE ADVANTAGE FOR A CARD COUNTER The advantage over the casino for card counters is very small around 1 1/2% so there is no room for mistakes.

The strategy must be played perfectly or you will be betting more at the wrong time and it will end up costing you money.

There are so many distractions in the casino that most people lose track of the count. I have been playing so long that I can joke with the dealer, talk to the person next to me order a coke from the waitress and still play a perfect game.

In all of the years that I have been playing blackjack in Arizona I have only seen 2 players that were at the skill level that it takes to beat the casinos month after month, year after year. Card Counting is something that takes a lot of work to master and play effectively and the truth is most players aren’t willing to put in that kind of time.

Card counting can be mastered if you are willing to put in the time. I am always amused at the length that casinos will go in order to

defeat card counters when in reality there just aren’t very many of them out there.

Ingredients

8 L. red wine1 L. Sherry (oloroso-style or off-dry), Madeira or Port 3 c. brandy3 c. triple sec 1 c. amaretto1 c. sweet vermouth1 c. dry vermouth1 c. Luxardo Maraschino liqueur 5 cinnamon sticks3 vanilla beans (split)1 lb. fresh Thai basil3-4 limes, sliced into wheels and halved3 lemons, sliced into wheels and halved3 oranges, sliced into wheels and halved3-5 c. (depending on personal taste) Thai Basil Syrup*soda water

Procedure

●● combine red wine, spirits and liqueurs in a large container●● add sliced fruits ●● add desired amount of syrup in increments to achieve desired

sweetness ●● stir●● place in a cooler with lid and dated label; let stand for at least two days

(strain fruit after four to five days)●● serve in choice of glassware over a little ice; top with splash of soda

water, spooning fruit over the top

* Thai basil syrupMake 3-5 cups simple syrup (50/50 water and sugar). Once syrup comes to a boil, turn off heat and add the fresh Thai basil (remove stems), cover with tight lid or foil. Let leaves infuse syrup for at least two hours, strain liquid by squeezing back into the pot through a strainer. Add the split vanilla beans and cinnamon sticks. Turn heat to low-medium, simmer for 15-20 minutes. Turn off heat and strain again (or leave for continuous developing flavor).

‘Tis the Season to Sparkle Marlene P. Baumann

I am thrilled to write about a fantastic Italian sparkling wine that is brand new to the Arizona market. Ca’ del Bosco is its name and a reputation for excellence is its game! The winery

is located in the Franciacorta wine region of northern Italy, just an hour northeast of Milan. Franciacorta is Italy’s leading production area for sparkling wines. Most of the Prosecco you find comes from the Franciacorta wine zone. Prosecco is indeed lovely and very popular especially this time of the year. But once you try the sparkling wines of Ca’ del Bosco, you will fall in love with their elegance and balance. They produce many– the one I wish to focus on is the Ca’ del Bosco Prestige Brut Non-Vintage.

First a little about the winery – its founder, Maurizio Zanella, is quite an ambassador for the wine zone of Franciacorta. In the 1970’s, he saw the quality that could be produced from the grapes of Franciacorta. On a visit to France as a young man, he learned the French method for making quality Champagne. The influence on him was deep – in fact, one of his first winemakers came from the Champagne house of Dom Perignon. Maurizio set out to put Italian sparkling wines on the map and in the top league. The name, Ca’ del Bosco, means a house in the woods and that is just what it was for Maurizio’s parents, who purchased it as a country home to get away from Milan on the weekends. The little house on a hill, surrounded by chestnut woods had a few acres of vines, from which Maurizio built the winery to what it is today – one of the most respected and highly-acclaimed wineries in all of Italy. The Ca’ del Bosco Prestige Brut can currently be found in several restaurants in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area; with an expected increase in popularity, its availability will soon be more wide-spread. The quality of the wine and attractive price point make it irresistible. It is at once fresh, elegant, delicate, and full of fruit on the palate. Made in the traditional method as used in Champagne, the sparkling wine Ca’del Bosco Prestige Brut is a blend of mainly Chardonnay grapes with smaller quantities of Pinot Noir and Pinot Bianco. Some of the vines are 135 years old and the winemaker also blends in 20% of his top reserve to make the Ca’ del Bosco Prestige Brut even more desirable. The wine has been awarded 90 points by Wine Spectator. December 21, 2012. We’re passing through the tails of two comets. The Mayan Calendar is ending and/or restarting. Our galactic alignment is changing. The end may be near… and if you talk enough with some people, you’ll know that you need to have a party to celebrate this world and its transformation.

What better way to celebrate evolution and change than wine. It evolves. It ostensibly changes day-to-day, year-to-year. And if you are like me, you’ll be looking for an economical and rapid way to enjoy yourself. This End-of-the-World

season, I suggest Barefoot Zinfandel and Shiraz. This is not only because of the price tag, but the price point—these wines are better on the second day, and age well through the third.

Barefoot Zinfandel has spice, berry, and a little funkiness, in a good way. Opening a bottle reminds me of opening the doors to a temperature-controlled barrel room. The aromas are slightly refined, oaky, and spicy. Grab two or three for each guest.

Barefoot Shiraz is equally comparable to the Zinfandel, though is a bit young-ish when first opened. If all goes well and you awake on December 22, 2012 with the proper number of limbs and only a headache, the Shiraz will only be showing better.

Fox Restaurant Concepts Launches Limited Edition

Fox Block Eight, the eighth in Fox Restaurant Concepts’ famed Fox Block private wine label series, will now be available to take home as well. During the holiday season, while supplies last, the private label will be available for purchase at Olive & Ivy Restaurant + Marketplace in Scottsdale for $27 per bottle or $300 for a 12-pack case.

Developed by Fox Sommelier Regan Jasper in partnership with Misha’s Vineyard of New Zealand, the wine has hints of pomegranate, rhubarb and strawberry pie and was crafted to drink on the patio anytime of the year, making it perfect for Arizona’s winter paradise.

Pairing suggestions: white or red meats, roasted or seared fish, mushrooms, spicy sauces, and mild or creamy cheeses.

The Fox Block wine program began modestly, producing just 140 cases in 2001, its launch year. The bottles sold out quickly, so Jasper knew he was on to something. Since then, Fox Restaurant Concepts has produced eight different batches of wine, each time increasing the production amount. Coming a long way since Fox Block One, Fox Block Eight had a run of over 2,200 cases.

Jasper says the production size is not the only thing special about Fox Block Eight. For him, it’s personal. While in New Zealand creating the wine, he

proposed to his girlfriend, now wife. It was an extraordinary experience he wanted to remember always with the love of his life.

The newlywed began his now-storied career quite modestly – as a finance-major server in Tucson who figured out that selling fine wine to his guests increased his ticket average, and tips. Once learning how to educate his guests about wine from mentor Dale Sparks, he took and aced the level one sommelier exam. After helping to open and develop the wine programs for Fuego and Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch, respectively, in Tucson, and earning world-wide acclaim, notably as a Wine Spectator Best of Excellence honoree, he met Sam Fox.

In 1999, Jasper and Fox joined together as partners.

High End BeersThere are a lot of higher end (and higher priced) beers popping up in the Arizona market recently. This includes some very rare, extremely limited items as well as some year round items designed to keep you drinking great beer the whole year through. Just a few years ago the thought of paying over $10 for a core brand from a brewery was unheard of, and $30 bottle purchases were reserved for very special beers such as the collaboration beer released under the Lost Abbey label named Isabelle Proximus. But in the past few weeks alone we have seen several new breweries introduced to Arizona that include individual, albeit large size, bottles at over the $10 price and at least two releases of

beers that exceed the $30 price, including a one-time only release of the legendary Westvleteren 12 at $85 for a six pack with two glasses.

Of all the new brewery releases, one of the most intriguing has to be Logsdon Farmhouse Ales out of Oregon. Started by David Logsdon, this is an exciting, fairly young brewery. If you are not

Hello friends, today let’s chat about a subject quite near to my heart, the Arizona Society of Home Brewers organization or “ASH” located here in the east valley. Why is this subject matter relevant right here and now? Because ASH is now accepting memberships.

This past year Iwrote about quite a few of our local home brewers in an attempt to bring you closer to the action. The detail that amazed me about each and every one of them was the simple roots by which they found themselves enjoying the craft, the old standby Mr. Beer kit. As funny as it sounds, if the seemingly biggest of all white elephants can inspire someone to better things, just think what a gift membership to ASH might do. Need a present to inspire that singular person for whom it seems already has everything? A membership to the largest homebrew club in the United States might just do the trick!

So, what comes with a membership to such a prestigious club? For starters you get discounts at all of the local home brew shops which makes taking on a new hobby a bit less expensive than you might imagine. You are also entitled to discounts at some of the better craft beer bars in the area like Flanny’s, The Hungry Monk, World of Beer and Whole Foods Chandler. This can be a very important feature when looking for inspiration and ideas on that new beer you plan on creating at home. Most importantly you will find a friendly group of likeminded individuals who will gladly share everything they know to a new brother or sister. familiar with history, Dave Logsdon, who with his former wife Jeanette started Wyeast Laboratories in Odell Oregon, dove into commercial beer making back in the 1980s when he learned that some people were looking to start a brewery in Hood River. With a background in home brewing, a degree in biochemistry, and a business providing yeast for the beer and wine industries, he figured he could knock out a decent beer or two.

He did. Full Sail delivered the first bottled microbrews in Oregon. Two years on, Logsdom departed to focus on Wyeast. But beer was always in the back of his mind. Finally, Logsdon took the leap and working with brewing partner, Charles Porter opened this brewery. Logsdon is hoping to tap growing interest in Belgian, farm-style ales. “These were created for farm workers, to keep them happy, and to quench their thirst,” Logsdon explains of the beers that originated in the area of southern Belgium and northern France. “And, back then, it was safer than drinking

They are commonly referred to as “saison” beers, and Logsdon Farmhouse Ales shares that name in its branding. Logsdon has two beers in this style — a Seizoen (a traditional malty beer, with a lighter, hoppy profile that will finish dry and crisp), and a SeizoenBretta, which features additional yeast that adds fruity notes and more acidity, plus a “farmyard” flavor — woody, earthy. They also produce Kili Wit, a different take on this traditional style featuring African spices in place of the coriander. A portion of the proceeds from this beer go to the K2 Adventures Foundation (based right here in Arizona) that provided community service, medical and educational enrichment for impoverished African children.

Additionally, they release a specialty Peche n Brett with organic peaches and Cerasus, created in the spirit of Flanders Red Ales. They have also set up their own Schaerbeek Cherry orchard, the fruit of which is prized among lambic producers for a sharp, intense flavor. We expect to see all of these release in Arizona.

Andy Barr runs a small brewery in Truckee California named Fifty Fifty. They produce a variety of amazing beers but are most know for a variation of their Imperial Stout, Totality. A few years back, they decided to barrel age these beers and release them after about six months. Now many breweries do this, but the difference with Eclipse, as it is called, is that the brewery uses a variety of different barrels and then sells each barrel treatment separately, creating a prized collection each year. Fifty Fiftyactuallsells “futures”

on these beers guaranteeing those who purchase an opportunity to enjoy the beers subject to the final yield. Outside of California, Arizona was the number one purchaser of these futures. As a result, the 2012 release is the first one to be offered in this state and hit the shelves this week. 2012 saw barrels of Bernheim Wheat Whiskey, Heaven Hill Mellow Corn Whiskey, Elijah Craig 12 year Old, Evan Williams, Old Fitzgerald, Rebel Yell and Rittenhouse Rye used for the aging process. All but the Rebel Yell are available here. These beers are only distinguished by the different color wax on the top and are cherished amongst beer enthusiasts. With a mere 175 cases for the entire state, this should sell out quickly.

The Abbey of Saint Sixtus produces is considered to produce some of the finest beers on the planet. They certainly produce some of the rarest. The usual process to obtain these beers involved calling the Abbey in advance and driving to the monastery, located far off the beaten path in Westvleteren Belgium, where you can pick up your pre-arranged order (no choice permitted, you get what is available) and drive off without ever seeing the brewery, or

even the inside of the place. There is no tap room or gift shop, the beer is brought out to your car and you leave. Across the street is a small café called In de Vrede which offers the beers for consumption on premise, along with some amazing cheeses. The Westvleteren 12 is considered the big prize from this brewery as it carries a perfect score on most beer rating web sites and is frequently listed as the top beer in the world.

However, this year on December 12th, roughly 1,000 six packs of this beer were offered for purchase in Arizona at the price of $85 each. To be fair, this included a couple of special tasting glasses, but still a high price for a beer. Regardless, the beer, which was offered exclusively at Total Wine, sold out in about eight hours, even with a limit of one six pack per person. And, if this sounds like a lot, consider that gray market sales of this beer usually run around $30 for one 11.2 oz bottle after shipping costs. Even in Belgium, this is a difficult beer to find since none is sold officially at any location except as noted above. When you can find it, the cost is usually around six or seven Euro ($8 or so).

The big question is, “Is the beer worth it?” That is actually a difficult question to answer and involves a variety of considerations. The short answer is that everybody who considers themselves a good beer drinker should try this beer at least once, even at the high price. To dig deeper is to understand the history of the brewery.

Trappist monks from the Catsberg monastery, located in France, founded the St Sixtus monastery in 1831. In 1838, the brewing at Westvleteren commenced. In 1850, some of the monks founded the Notre-Dame de Scourmont monastery, which also brews a Trappist beer, Chimay. During World Wars I and II, the Westvleteren brewery continued to operate, albeit at a lower capacity. The brewery was the only Trappist one to retain the copper vessels throughout the wars—the other breweries had the copper salvaged by the Germans for their war efforts. In WWI this was primarily due to the abbey not being occupied by

the Germans, because it was caring for wounded allied troops. In 1931, the abbey began selling beer to the general public, having only served beer to guests and visitors up until that time. In 1946, the St. Bernardus brewery in nearby Watou was granted a license to brew beer under the St Sixtus name. This agreement ended in 1992 when the Abbey decided to bring the brewing process back into the Abbey in order to retain its Trappist designation.

The brewery currently employs three secular workers for various manual labortasks, however the primary brewing is done by the monks only. It is the only Trappist brewery where the monks still do all of the brewing. Of the 26 Cistercians who reside at the abbey, five monks run the brewery, with an additional five who assist during bottling.

It is the St. Bernardus beers that create the confusion. When Westvleteren beers were once again brewed inside the walls of the monastery, the brewers at St. Bernardus were permitted to continue using the recipes with new names. Thus, St. Bernardus ABT 12 was born. This beer was identical to that of the Westvleteren 12 and has gone essentially unchanged. However, the Westvleteren beer now uses a different yeast strain making ABT 12 closer to the original. Further complicating matters is that ABT 12 also receives a perfect score on the consumer web sites and sells for substantially less than its rarer counterpart. The upshot is that, while Westy 12, as it is known, is a must try beer, St. Bernardus ABT 12 is its equal for quality, and a whole lot less expensive…and more available.

As the beer industry takes on this new dimension, it will be interesting to watch the limits of the market get tested. Where is the top in terms of dollars? Who knows? Wine sells for much more, maybe higher end beers will get there to. In the meantime enjoy these great new beers and purchase more of the ones you love, whether for everyday or for special occasions depending on your budget. Either way, you will be glad you did.
