REPORT ON ALL ACTIVITIES (2012-2018)
ACADEMIC YEAR 2017-2018
Zoology Association – 2017-18
Zoology Association for this academic year
(2017-2018) on 24.07.2017 (Monday) was
inaugurated by one of our eminent alumni, Dr. S.
Sridhar, Senior Scientist, CSIR-Institute of
Genomics and Integrative Biology, New Delhi.
Both UG and PG students participated in the
inauguration. Dr. Sridhar delivered a lecture on
“Non-Coding RNA Functions”. Rev. Fr. A.
Antonysamy, S.J. our Secretary and Rev. Dr. V.
Britto, S.J., our Principal felicitated and
delivered inaugural address respectively.

Dr. M. Narayanan (Retd.), our former faculty member and Vice Principal of our college
delivered a special lecture on “Principles of Biodiversity Conservation” on 28th
July 2017.

The third association meeting was convened on 20th
September, 2017. Emeritus Professor of our
Department Dr. Dunstan P. Ambrose, Ph.D., D.Sc. delivered a special lecture on “Attributes of
Students”.

A special lecture on “Drug Development and Delivery” was conducted by our Zoology
Association for our second year UG and PG students on 8th
December 2017. The resource person
of the day Dr. C. Ravi, Assistant Professor, Thiyagarajar College, Madurai highlighted various
reasons, symptoms, prevention and control of various diseases.

Dr. Hans E. Hummel, Justus-Liebig University, Germany, delivered a special lecture on
“Adventures in Chemical Ecology” 09.01.2018 (Tuesday).

Mr. N. Ponnarasan, Education Assistant in District Science Centre, Tirunelveli delivered a
special lecture on “Science Centre: An Overview” (08.02.2018).

The valedictory function was held on 22.03.2018. The Chief Guest of the function Dr. S. Antony
Beski Rayan, Associate Professor, Department of Botany, St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous),
Palayamkottai,Tirunelveli delivered a special lecture on “Bioinformatics – The Road Ahead”.
All the students both UG and PG participated in these events and got benefitted.

Students’ participation in academic activities and competitions:
Seven of our M.Sc. students participated in Lecture Workshop on “Application of Nanoparticles
in Medicine (ANM-17)” held at Kamaraj College, Tuticorin sponsored by the Science Academy
of India on 21st and 22
nd August 2017.

Students of our Department participated in SPC Zoo-Fest 2017 a State level intercollegiate
competition held at Sri Parasakthi College for Women, Courtallam on 25th
September 2017 and
won the following Prizes with overall Second place.

Ponmalar, G. (II M.Sc.) won first place in Elocution (Tamil), Sharmila, J. and Karthika, L. (II
M.Sc.) won first place in Rangoli, Manickavasakam, S., Muthukanagavel, and Murugan. A (I
M.Sc); Balaji.S (II B.Sc) and Bala Iyappan, M. (I B.Sc.) won first place in Mime, Selverani, S.
(II M.Sc.) won second place in Poster presentation and Sherlin John, J. (II M.Sc.) won third
place in Paper Presentation.

On 26th
and 27th
September 2017, our third year B.Sc. students D. Felis T. Angelene, D. Jude, I.
Indhira Anu and A. Jerry accompanied by Dr. S. Mabel Parimala participated in the Indian
Science Academy sponsored Lecture Workshop on “Recent Advances in Biological Sciences
(RABS-17)” at Department of Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, G.V.N. College,
Kovilpatti, Tamil Nadu.

Renuka, S. (II B.Sc.) won second price in pot painting completion of INDIGO held at our
college. Jeslin, J. (II B.Sc.) won second price in relay competition conducted in our college
sports day meet.

Ms. Abiramai, M. (I B.Sc.) secured Third Price in Quiz Competition conducted by National
commission for women, New Delhi on 30.11.2017 at out college premises.

D. Jude (III B.Sc.) actively participated in the one day workshop entitled “Socio Economic
Development in Marine Sector” at Kamaraj College, Tuticorin on 5.9.2017.
He also volunteered as SCRIBE for visually impaired students in Anne Jane Askwith Hr. Sec.
School, Palayamkottai on 23.9.2017. He has been involved in wild animal census. My hearty
congratulations and I strongly appreciate his noble service.

Two of our II M.Sc. students (J. Sherlin John and L. Karthika) helped our I M.Com. students to
identify Bood Group of Padagasalai village people during their one day STAND visit on
8.10.2017.
Ms. Tonia RanjithaAmritha (I B.Sc.) won Second Prize in Stamp Collection competition and Ms.

Abirami, (I B.Sc) participated in the State Level Intercollegiate Competitions held in ANJA
College, Sivakasi on 13.10.2017.
On 15th
February 2018, five of III UG students participated in a State Level seminar on
“Emerging Trends in Aquaculture” held in Popes College (Autonomous), Sawyerpuram.

Eleven of our students participated in Science Academy lecture workshop on “Plant Taxonomy:
Concerns and Strategies” conducted by the Department of Botany, St. Xavier’s College,
Palayamkottai on 12th
and 13th
February, 2018.

Our III B.Sc Zoology students accompanied by DR. J. Babila Jasmine and Dr. R. Azhagu Raj
made an Industrial visit to Tamil Nadu Govt. Cocoon processing and Silk seed production centre
at Nannagaram, Courtalam on 20th
February 2018. On 6th
March 2018.

I M.Sc students made a Biotechnology Laboratory visit to Kerala University College,
Trivandrum, Kerala and also visited the Snake Park, Museum, Zoo at Trivandrum. The students
were accompanied by Dr. A. Jayaseeli and Dr. P. Selvaraj. The purpose this visit was to
understand the fundamentals of biotechnological tools and technologies; and also to learn the
principles, methods and working mechanism of bio instruments available in recent trends.
The lab consisted of highly equipped bio instruments that were used to carry out various
studies. Initially a small lecture on the construction and working of scanning electron microscope
and then the method of purification of water in aquaculture technique was being taught by Dr. G.
Prasad, Associate Professor.

TRIVANDRUM
ZOO
We had a wonderful opportunity to see the varied creatures of the world in this single spot of 55
acres (22 ha) of woodland, lakes and lawns. The ZOO consisted of the following species of
reptiles and birds.

Our III B.Sc. and II M.Sc. students accompanied by Dr. P. Selvaraj and Dr. J. Mabel Parimala
made a study tour to CMFRI, Cochin and Munnar Tropical evergreen Forest on 9th
and 10th
March, 2018.
An educational tour was arranged for the students of
III B.Sc. and II M.Sc. Zoology to observe the
ecological diversity of Kochi marine ecosystem and
Munnar hill station where we can find typical forest
trophical levels. Kochi has been a port since 1341
located in the south-west coast of Ernakulam district
of Kerala. It is also the place where a unique Central
Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) is
situated. Munnar also called as the “Kashmir of
South India” is situated at around 1600 m above
mean sea level in the Western Ghats mountain range, is a town and hill station located in the Idukki
district of Kerala. It is a wonderful site to observe the variation on the Eco diversity along the changing
altitudes.

ACADEMIC YEAR 2016-2017
Activities of the Zoology Association for the academic year 2016-17 began with the on of the
ZOOLOGY ASSOCIATION on 26.08.2016 by Dr. B. Ahilan, Professor fisheries College and
Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Fisheries University, Thoothukudi. He delivered an innovative
lecture on "Ornamental Fishes".

The Intercollegiate Competition “ZOOFEST 2016-17” was organized on 15th December 2016.
Six Colleges Participated in the event and the overall Championship was won by Sarah Tucker
College.

The Department also organized a special lecture on "Human Impact on Biodiversity" by Dr. B.
Victor, The Controller of Examinations, St. Xavier's College (Autonomous), Palayamkottai on
19.12.2016.

As a part of Zoology Association Dr. M. I. Zahir Hussain, Associate professor, Department of
zoology, Sadakathullah Appa College, gave a special lecture on "Assessment of water pollution"
on 10h Feb. 2017. Zoology Association valediction was organized on 27.02.17.

Dr. S. Senthil Nathan, Sri Parmakalyani centre, M.S.University, delivered a special lecture on
"Biopesticides: Development and formulation by Biotechnological approach".

Tmt. Nadhira Haniffa Endowment lecture has been organized on 28.02.2017 and the endowment
lecture was delivered by Dr. A.J. A. Ranjitsingh, Sri Parmakalyani centre, M.S University on
"Super Bugs-A reality".

Two day national workshop titled "Genetics today" sponsored by Indian Academy of Science
was organized on 6th
and 7th
March 2017. Prof. H.A. Ranganathan, Indian Institute of Science,
Bangalore was the convener of this workshop. About 150 participants from different colleges
and Universities participated in the workshop.

Joshua Dharmaraj and M. Vijay sand and Thiruvengadam of III year participated in the Pongal
bird count conducted by Ebird organization during 15-17h January 2017.

M.Vijay Sankar, Joshua Dharmaraj, Thiruvengadam and Ragavendran of III Year UG and Paul
Immanuel Rajaseelan and Rajesh of I Year UG participated in Annual water fowl census
conducted by Atree on 4th
February 2017.

Five students of UG participated in "Tiger censes" organized by KMTR, Mundanthurai, forest
department on 27th
Feburary to 5th
March 2017.
II M.Sc students went on a study tour to TamilNadu Agriculture college and Research Institute
and National vector control Research center, Madurai on 15th
March 2017.

ACADEMIC YEAR 2015-2016
Zoology association was inaugurated on 22.07.2015 by Dr. D. Amish Abraham, Associate
Professor & Head, Principal in-charge, St. John’s College and delivered lecture on
“Environmental Awareness”.

The department organized a lecture on “Regeneration studies using earthworm as a model
animal” on 12.01.2016 by Dr. S. Sudhakar, Professor, Department of Biotechnology, M.S.
University, Tirunelveli.
A guest lecture was given by Dr. Sudhakar Issac, Associate Professor, Department of Zoology,
St.John’s College on “Bats and their ecological role.” The department organized a hands-on
training programme for staff titled “Advanced techniques in Biotechnology” on 23.09.2015.

Mr. Saravanaperumal from Abbes Biotech, Chennai conducted theoretical and practical
sessions. On 25.08.2015 the department conducted an orientation for UG and PG students, a
special lecture has been delivered by S.Shanmugasundaram from Anur Biotech, Tirunelveli on
“Biotechnology Applications”. One day workshop for II year UG students has been conducted
by Mr.SaravanaPerumal, Abbes Bio.Tech, Chennai on “Chromatographic Techniques”.

Orientation on “Data Processing in Biological Research” under MOU was given by Mrs.
Dayana Dolly and Mr. Sakthivel of Plester Business service for UG and PG students of our
Department.

M. Vijay Sankar, K. Ragavendran, S. Thiruvengadam, and I. Joshua Dharmaraj of II B.Sc
Zoology attended Annual Tiger Census-2016 organized by KMTR (Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger
Reserve), Tamilnadu forest department from January 23rd
to 28th
Jan 2016.V. Kabilan of I B.Sc
attended Annual Waterfowl census-2016 organized by ATREE, Bangalore.

III BSc Zoology students went on a field cum industrial visit on 29th
January 2016 to Fisheries
College, Tuticorin and CMFRI, Tuticorin.

The Department of Zoology conducted ZOO FEST 2015-16 on 18th
December, 2015. Inter
collegiate competitions were conducted in the field of “Biology and Animal Biotechnology” for
the students of both UG and PG of neighboring colleges. The Overall championship was won by
Rani Anna Government Women College for the second consecutive year.
Tmt. Nadhira Haniffa endowment lecture was conducted on 18th January 2016. Dr. S.
Ravikumar, Professor from Alagappa University delivered a special lecture on “Bioprospecting
of Marine resources-a clean India approach”.

A two day national seminar was conducted on 18th
and 19th
of February 2015 entitled “Life on
Edge: Concerns, Causes and Conservation”. Delegates from various Universities, Institutions
and research centers participated.

With the sincere efforts of our faculty we hope to achieve greater glory in all our activities in
future. The Zoology association valediction was organized on 2nd
March 2016 and was addressed
by M.S. Selvakumar, Asst. Professor Department of Chemistry, St. Xavier’s College.
ACADEMIC YEAR 2014-2015
The department of Zoology with highly qualified and dedicated faculty is marching ahead in its
academic and research endeavors. As one of the prestigious department under the Star Status
conferred by the Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi, we have introduced Basic
Biotechnology for the students of other Science departments from November, 2014.Dr. K.
Sahayaraj has been recognized as the Overall Coordinator for the Star College Scheme conferred
to our college by DBT, New Delhi.
Dr. Babu Rajendran, Professor, Department of Environmental Biotechnology, Bharathidasan
University,Tiruchirapali,shared his experience in the field of aquaculture, specifically with
regard to research on the freshwater pollution on 14.08.2014.

Our department conducted two day workshop on SDS-PAGE gel electrophoresis on 24th
and
25th
February 2015, all the first year students attended the programme, Dr. U. Ramesh, Assistant
Professor, M. K University and Dr.C. Ravi, Assistant Professor, Thiyagarajar College, Madurai
gave special lecture cum training to the students.

J. Sherlin John and Durai Singh of IlI B.Sc. Zoology along with Dr. T Pushpanathan attended the
State level symposium on "Rearing multivoltine silkworm (Bombyx mori)" held at Hajee
Karutha Rowther Howdia College, Madurai on 28t August 2014.

J. Sherlin John, I. Joshua Dharmaraj and M. Vijay Sankar attended the Inter Collegiate
Competition held at ICS, Rajakkamangalam on 19th
September, 2014 and won the third place in
the Overall Championship. I. Joshua Dharmaraj won First prize in Paper presentation and Young
Scientist award with a cash prize of Rs. 3000 and John, I. Joshua Dharmaraj and M.Vijay Sankar
secured third prize in Quiz Competition.

I. Joshua Dharmaraj and M. Vijay Sankar of I BSc went for the ‘Annual tiger and tigerprey
census 2015' organized by Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, Tamilnadu forest department
from February 17th to 21th 2015.

Inter departmental competitions, "ZOOFEST 2014-15" was conducted on 12th
January 2015.
Students from more than five nearby institutions actively participated in the events and the
overall championship was won by Rani Anna Government Arts College for Women, Tirunelveli.

February 2015 to Rajan
Aqua farm, Deva &Co marine food processing industry and CMFRL Tuticorin.

III B.Sc. Zoology and II M.Sc, students went on a study tour to Mysore and Bangalore from 19th
to 22d February 2015. III BSc students visited Fisheries College, Tuticorin as a part of their
aquaculture practical class.

ACADEMIC YEAR 2013-2014
The inauguration of Zoology Association was held on 29th
July 2013 and a special lecture on
"Safer food" was delivered by Dr. M. Kalyanasundaram Professor, Tamil Nadu Agriculture
University, Coimbatore. Rev. Dr. V. Gilburt Camilus, S.J., Principal, presided over the function.
Dr. B. Xavier Innocent, Head of the Departmentmotivated the students to participate actively in
the programmes organized by the Zoology Association.

The second meeting of the Zoology Association was held on 13.09 2013 and Dr. L Isaiarasu,
Associate Professor of Zoology, Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal College, Sivakasi delivered a
lecture on Vermitechnology.

Two of our II M. SC students participated one day seminar on "Marine conservation" held at
APCV College, tuticorn on 18.09.2013.

One day academic festival, 'ZOOFEST 2013-14' was held on December17, 2014, More than 40
students from nine colleges participated in five different competitions. Overall rolling cup was
won by St. John's College, Palayamkottai.

On 22.01.2014 Wednesday a talk on "Career Guidance" was given by Dr. G. Sahaya Anthony
Xavier, Assistant Professor of Botany, St. Xavier's College, to our PG and III UG students.

On 07.02.2014, the Valediction of Zoology Association was conducted and a special lecture on
"Butterfly Diversity and Conservation" was delivered by Dr. K. Murugan, Professon and Head,
Department of Zoology, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore.

Thirty five III B.Sc., students went on an educational tour to Mysore and Bangalore from 15th to
17th
February 2014.

All II M.Sc. students made a field visit to Rajan Aqua Farm Tuticorin, Fisheries College and
Research Institute, Tuticorin, and CMFRI, Tuticorin, on 18th
of February 2014. Three of our III
B.Sc students participated in the "Birds census' organized by NGOs of Tuticorin,Tirunelveli and
kanyakumari.

A National seminar on 'Recent Trends in Endocrinology' was organized by Dr. S. Maria
Sebastian and Dr. P. Raja., Department of Zoology, on 24 & 25 Feb. 2014.

One M.Phil scholar, two II M.Sc. students, and a B.Sc. student participated in "National Seminar
on Integrated Pest Management" held at Thiagarajar College, Madurai on 26.02.2014. Two B.Sc.
students participated in National workshop on Health Heed - MWHH 14 on 28th
Feb. 2014 held
at Sarah Tucker College, Tirunelveli.
