Hoscoe Turner, famous speed flier, is turning movie actor in a picture based on the adventures of a flight inspector. The flier, -winner of the Bendix and Thompson cup events of the national air races in recent years, arrived here from New York in his. own Diane to prepare for the movie ! day and then called firemen. A roie. I squirrel's nest was blocking the "If there's enough f'ying in the ! chimney. picture, I guess I'll get by," grinned Col. Turner. * * * Luise Rainer returned to work today, after a four-day illness, i despite the advice of her physician ! that she remain in bed for a few more days. The actress has been in ill health and announced she will take a six months vacation as soon as her current film is com- pleted. Jellie started his furnace the other ZOMBIE ZQWIE Hollywood Night Life Weird and Wonderful This is one of a series of articles by Frank Morriss, Free Press' staff writer, who is at present "star'' gazing at Hollywood. By FRANK MORRISS Variety is the spice of life, and when Hollywood goes -out to spend an evening at the secluded little drinking and eating spots, it carries a couple of pepper pots with it. All within the space of a few hours last night I stopped at a tropical hut where the rain beat down from a bamboo roof, paused at an elaborate beachcomber eating house, whisked away to Bali only to be brought- to earth in a Five and Ten cent eating house where sailors with girls under their arms consum- ed rum and huge hamburgers. And I have secured the recipe for a Zombie—but more about that later. The gentleman at Paramount studios who arranged my location trip two days ago has a few more ideas up his sleeve and when he eat a large slice of humble pie. I have been sneering in print and ii. public about the. way the public- ity boys have been drumming up stories about Joan Crawford's op- eratic voice. Joan has never been one of my favorites and when the voice culture stories began to circu- late I dismissed them as mere press agent stuff. So when on e of the boys asked me into' a music room at M.G;M. to hear some of her. records, I thought I was in for some fun. But the Crawford singing voice is lovely. I heard her do an aria from Traviata, a semi-popular song, The Lamp on the Corner, . a duet Erorn Don Giovanni with young Douglas McPhail, the Barcarolle from The Tales of Hoffmann with a gentleman. The lady had on the | Rosa Ponselle and a sacred number darndest red velvet hat and her with Betty Jaynes of the Chicago face was shaped like a flower. Opera The Crawford voice started "That's Marie Wilson," said my guide,-"the Marie Wilson who has created such sensation Boy Meets Girl with James Cagney and Pat O'Brien." Marie must have known my friend, for she blew him a kiss and smiled. It was almost 2 o'clock in the morning now, so we sailed from Bali hi another taxi, and as we moved swiftly along Los Angeles glowed soprano and rich, rounded mezzo—truly beautiful to hear. The studio not going to make an suggested that we take a night tour | below in a 'blanket of lights. I was raady for anything—which; Five and Ten was a good thing. Away we rode taxi and paused opposite Grauman's Chinese theatre, while at our right vas the rambling Hollywood hotel. Two huge searchlights pierced the sky and beyond swept the hills that encircle Los Angeles and its sub- rbs. It is the reopening of the .even Seas. The outside was just white plaster i but inside it was dim and mysterious and pictures of nude native girls decorated the walls. A bar ran the whole length of the eating house, looking out into a palm fringed courtyard. Suddenly frorrt- some- where there was a faint rumble of thunder and it began to drizle out- side. Just by pressing a button the barman had created a storm— a storm which grew in intensity as the lightning flashed and the rain came down in torrents. Then Came the Zombie Like a tropical storm, it was soon over and cut on Hollywood boule- vard we stepped again, into an- other taxi and away to Don the Beachcomber's restaurant. More bamboo. This time a huge, dim, hut with Hawaiian waiters. There we dined on Chin- ese green peas with pork, almonds, chicken, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, celery and onions, duck, fried shrimp and breast of chicken . . . all mixed up in a strange but de- licious concoction. Yes, it sounds strange, but it was really delicious and with it we sipped a Zombie. I shall never drink a Zombie again. Here's the recipe: The serv- ing glass should be approximately 14 ounces, and frosted. Into it is shaken one ounce of Demerara 150 proof rum, one- ounce of heavy Jamaica rum, one once of Guad- alupe rum and one ounce of Porto Rican cartadora. To this is added one ounce of Falernum and one ounce of simple syrup, the juice of one whole'Mexican lime and four dashes of bitters. Decorate with fruits in season, and mint Modernistic Bali j Another taxi, another trip. This time out to the Sunset Strip, a sec- tion of land not controlled, by the city of Los Angeles. We walked down some steps into Bali, a mod- ernistique Bali it is true, but still Bali. Here Bruz Fletcher was sing- ing sophisticated songs. In a high, unpleasant voice, with just the merest of accompaniments, they were nevertheless given with such a sense of style and. showmanship that the crowd demanded encore after encore. Over in the corner sat a lady and operatic picture with her for a year, but when they do I think you'll be amazed. I was. And so to Bradley's Five and Ten where we saw the sailors and their lassies drinking and eating. Good California wine was five cents a glass and here is a specimen from the menu: "A huge hamburger steak cooked in Italian bread and served with a flock ot shoestring potatoes, 20 cents." I didn't try that. Enough was enough. We headed home. And can you blame us? Ladies and gentlemen, you are SPEED ACE COMING. Montreal Oct. 27. ZOMBIE ZQWIEHollywood Night LifeWeird and Wonderful

This is one of a series of articles by Frank Morriss, Free Press'staff writer, who is at present "star'' gazing at Hollywood.

By FRANK MORRISSVariety is the spice of life, and when Hollywood goes -out to

All within the space of a fewhours last night I stopped at atropical hut where the rain beatdown from a bamboo roof, pausedat an elaborate beachcomber eatinghouse, whisked away to Bali onlyto be brought- to earth in a Five andTen cent eating house where sailorswith girls under their arms consum-ed rum and huge hamburgers.
