Autumn

2014

Individuals, groups and businesses across the Midlands and particularly Coventry and Warwickshire have really taken us

to their hearts and made a huge difference.

Within this publication of smile you will read about some of the inspiring things that people have been doing to

raise funds.

The result of your efforts has seen our income nearly double – a phenomenal achievement.

Thank you all so muchDue to the significant increase in funding the Trustees have made a commitment to open the Hospice 5 days every week and we are

currently recruiting additional staff to ensure we meet this goal.

But, there is still a long way to go. We all want Zoë’s Place in Coventry to provide round the clock

care every day. The babies and families that visit the Hospice (and perhaps more importantly those that we

currently cannot accommodate) deserve nothing less. So, this year we need to raise even more and hit the magic £1m.

Please, please, continue to support us because we simply cannot do it without you.

I work at Zoë’s Place as one of two Fundraising Administrators and (for my sins!) have been chosen as the new Editor of our smile Newsletter. As in previous editions, the newsletter shares stories of supporters’ fundraising activities, news from the Hospice and details of upcoming events. If you’d like to get involved, whether it be a fundraising event you want to discuss organising or a trek or challenge you wish to participate in, please do get in touch with us. The Fundraising Team are delighted that Kaylee Mills has joined the team as a Fundraising Administrator. Kaylee joins us after spending time working directly with the children as a Support Worker in the Hospice and is a welcome addition to the team. Our Volunteers have once again exceeded all expectations and have been out and about attending events, running stalls, giving talks and collecting cheques on our behalf. We would like to say a very BIG ‘Thank You’ to them all. To all those who have raised funds for us over the past few months we extend our thanks – you are all brilliant!I hope reading about the fantastic happenings at Zoë’s Place brings a smile to your face!Kath, Editor

The Coventry Telegraph is throwing its weight behind Zoё’s Place Baby Hospice’s bid to be open every minute of every day. We need to raise more than £1million a year to provide 24/7 care for babies and children up to the age of five with life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses.

The Telegraph are playing a part in this and want to raise £25,000 through their Magic Million campaign to help our dream come true:

“We want to push them on to the Magic Million mark and are calling on the people of Coventry and Warwickshire to help us do so. So whether you are planning a bike ride, running a marathon or just want to put your hand in your pocket for Zoё’s Place, every single penny will help the children and families who rely on the baby hospice.”

Many thanks to De-Courcey Travel of Coventry for donating a double decker bus for Zoё’s Place. The bus is in service every day in and around Coventry. This will bring a tremendous awareness to the Hospice. Also thanks to CIA Insurance of Rugby who sponsored the bus for us, and thanks to Renaissance for the stunning design.

We have had a fantastic summer this year. The weather has been perfect and the children here at Zoë’s Place have been having lots of fun. They have enjoyed playing games in the garden and splashing around in the paddling pool.

We have been out and about in the minibus donated by The Lord’s and Lady Taveners, and had a lovely day out at Twycross Zoo. The children loved seeing all the different animals; the monkeys and penguins kept us all entertained. We were invited to Drayton Manor Theme Park and despite the weather, it didn’t stop us from having a wonderful time. We had a trip to Riversley

Sand Park in Nuneaton where we fed the ducks and had fun on the adventure playground. We also visited Hoar Farm where the children had a lovely time feeding the animals; the goats made us all giggle and they were very cheeky!

Our thanks go out to everyone at Thomas Cook Children’s Charity and Together for Short Lives for their generous donation which enabled the installation of air conditioning units at the Hospice. The babies, infants and staff were all able to enjoy the summer sunshine whilst remaining cool due to the funding of this much needed project. In addition to raising funds to support care and services at the Hospice we do have projects which may appeal to supporters who prefer to fund improvements to the Hospice, items of equipment, or toys. For further information on current projects please contact Janet Lee, Grants Officer at [email protected]

Claire, our Nursery Nurse, organised a

summer party over at The Newbold Comyn

Arms in Leamington for our families.

The Magic Party People kept everyone

entertained with their fabulous balloon

modelling, face painting and magic show.

We would like to say a massive thank you

to Sarah Miller for very kindly donating

the venue for this occasion.

World Cup fever hit Zoë’s Place and the

children enjoyed a day of dressing up in

their favourite World Cup colours and took

part in activities.

Here’s just a flavour of what’s been happening over the last few months...

Orbit Homes Golf Day

The third annual Charity Golf Day hosted by

Orbit Homes took place on 10th July at The

Warwickshire Golf & Country Club, Leek Wootton,

which included a day of golf followed by live music and

an evening meal. With the aim of beating last year’s total of over £12,000,

over 200 guests attended from a mix of local businesses across the region.

Orbit Homes’ Head of Construction, George Obeng-Manu, the main

driver behind the event, said: “This is a charity which delivers such

an excellent and personal service to people who are dealing with an

unthinkable situation. I am proud that Orbit Homes were able to pull

together with businesses throughout the area to help raise money

for this deserving cause. We are determined to make this the most

successful event to date.”

And with that in mind the Golf Day raised a whopping £36,287.18

smashing the previous years’ targets and to date Orbit have raised

over £70,000 for the Hospice.

Coventry to Paris Bike Ride Thirty-eight eager and energetic cyclists set off from Peugeot HQ in Coventry on Thursday 11th September to cycle up hill (and there were plenty of those) and down dale before arriving in Paris three days later. The pedal-pushing crew consisted of seasoned, regular cyclists to complete novices who had to conquer over 100 miles on the first day and a total of 304 miles before they could finally say Bonjour to the French capital. The team has raised the magnifique sum of £74,696.

to all our supporters

Let’s not forget...

All our BUPA Great North Run participants; Free Radio, Aecom; Ash Green School, Co-op; Badgers’ 10K and

Northbrook 10K runners; Eaton; Sporting Bears, The Ropewalk; HSBC, Simon Illingsworth; Coventry Bees; Florence,

Bethany & Jessica – supporters from Hemel Hempstead; Midrepro, Fortec ... plus the many, many others who have

helped raise funds for us over the last few months – your support means so much to us.

Chloe’s Head ShaveA wonderful 15 year old young lady by the name of Chloe Harper had her head shaved in July to raise funds for us.

Chloe says: “The support I’ve received has been amazing and I was looking to raise £500, I have exceeded this goal and I am now at £561”.

A £20,000 Gift from the Hart

Ex-Coventry City Player John Hartson was so moved when

he visited Zoë’s Place, he knew he had to help through his

John Hartson Foundation. John said “As a father of five

it really touches your heart when you see what these

children are going through.”

Blokes ‘n’ Spokes

Another awesome challenge was taken on by

Blokes ‘n’ Spokes, a group of 11 friends, who

banded together to raise funds for Zoë’s Place

by cycling the 170 miles from Morecambe

to Bridlington, Coast to Coast on the ‘Way of

the Roses’ in one day.

They achieved their goal and raised the

fabulous amount of £5,620.58.

Reverend Ian Worsfold of The Methodist Church, Coventry & Nuneaton CircuitThis October Ian turns 40 and decided that someone should benefit from what he calls his ‘misfortune’! Ian says “I am so pleased at people’s generosity enabling me to raise over £1,000 for this amazing place”.

Tandem Skydive

A group of adrenaline thirsty people took part in a Tandem Skydive

at Peterborough Airfield in May. All 24 who took part had never

done anything like it before, but now want to do it again!!!

The amount raised by all who took part was over £11,500, a
