Luftwaffe Day at The Flying Heritage Collection

ON THE COVERThis month's cover features the BMW Museum on the left and the world wideBMW Corporate headquarters on the right during the launch of the new i series brand.

The Flying heriTage ColleCTion, Paul Allen’s wonderful historic airplane collection, is about to get its first BMW-engined airplane. A Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-5 is scheduled to join the Collection this spring. When it does, it will join other German aircraft on “Luftwaffe Day” where all the German planes are flown. We’re hoping to orga-nize a Club event to view the warbirds on Luftwaffe Day. The Flying Heritage Collection is in Everett near Paine Field. A large hanger has been converted to display about twenty planes, mostly from World War II. With Paul Allen’s wide interests, the Collection now includes SpaceShipOne, the winner of the Ansari X-Prize. Some WWII tanks have also joined the planes. Most of us might consider owning mod-els of these artifacts but Paul likes to own the real things. Plus, he insists that all the planes are authentically restored and flyable. This is very unusual for an aircraft museum and Paul makes sure every plane is flown periodically. The Fly Days have themes, one of which is Luftwaffe Day when the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 will join other German aircraft such as a Fieseler Fi 156 C-2 Storch and a Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-3. The Focke-Wulf Fw190 was a single-seater fighter with a radial engine, designed in the late 1930s and flown by the Luftwaffe throughout the war. The Flying Heritage Collection’s airframe was shot down over Russia. The plane will be restored to look as it did when it last flew, right down to livery of the pilot, Paul Ratz. The BMW 801 engine

was scavenged from a wrecked JU-57 tri-motor transport plane. The fourteen-cylinder engine is the correct original equipment for this plane. The BMW 801 engine is a radial, air-cooled engine with two rows of seven cylinders. Total displacement is 41.8 liters and it produced between 1,540 and 1,970 horsepower. A key feature of the engine was the Kommandogerat (command device), which was a mechanical-hydraulic system that automatically adjusted engine fuel flow, propeller pitch, supercharger setting, mixture and ignition timing, all in response to a single throttle lever. Here’s the rub: These Fly Days are scheduled with limited lead-time. And sometimes they are cancelled due to weather. So watch our Club’s website bulletin board for information on the date and time of the event. Information will be posted under the Events section. Admission to the Collection is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and military, $8 for those six to fifteen and free for children under six. Watching the Fly Days from the parking lot is free.

iT’S year Seven for the rubber-meets-the-rollers event. Come out and give your Bimmer a good flogging, see what kinda horsepower your BMW really makes and just have a great time. We had an awesome turn out last year, running over twenty cars. I’m thinking of several new M3s in the Club that it would be nice to see run, as well as some modded E36 and E46 M3s. Anyone have a new 335is? How about a new X5/X6? I know a certain ’57 Chev with aluminum heads and a roller cam that runs mid to low 11s I would like to see run.

BMW Dyno Day and BBQAKA, gear-head get-together, bench-racing session with proof or just all-around good time with car show and food.

June 11

Alex, John and their guys at Carb Connection in Kirkland are hosting the dyno tech session for our Club at a discounted rate. Saturday, June 11 we will pay only $75 (normally $145) to run our cars on their brand new four-wheel-drive dyno. Make up to three runs and get a print out ($10 to burn a CD) of your car’s actual horsepower at the wheels as well as air/fuel ratio. The Club will be providing the BBQ and refreshments around noon. There is plenty of parking on the back side of the building by the dyno room, so whether or not you’re going to run your car, join your fellow gearheads in having a great time. July 10–23

Many of the cars will be brought through Seattle on their way to Vancouver. We had hoped to have a party for the owners and their cars. Alas, there will not be a time when all the cars will be in Seattle. And many of the owners, coming from all over the U.S. and parts of Europe, are flying straight to Vancouver while their cars are trans-ported from Seattle to Vancouver. This means that if you want to see all this BMW goodness, you’ll need to go to Vancouver. The rally participants will be meeting up and holding a dinner on Saturday night, July 9. The best time to see the cars will be Sunday morning as the rally begins. Start time for the Expedition 2011 Rally is 9 a.m. on July 10, Sunday, from the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, 900 West Georgia St, Vancouver, BC.

Pacific Northwest HistoricsThe PaCiFiC norThweST hiSToriCS will be held July 1 through July 3 at Pacific Raceways, off SR18, just outside Auburn, WA. The Pacific Northwest Historics is one of the premier vintage sportscar races in the Pacific Northwest and is the largest event of its type in the USA where all proceeds go to a chari-table cause. All of the entry fees go to the uncompensated care fund at Seattle Children’s Hospital. There will be approximately 250 pre-1970 vintage race cars, entered in the races. As usual, the car corral provides an opportunity for local car clubs to meet and display their cars. The BMW CCA PSR Club will once again participate in the Car Corral. To allow for more mem-bers to participate, the Club is limiting members to one day. To participate in our corral, you must register and pay $30 per day in advance. This $30 covers the car and driver. Each additional adult passenger will be charged $25 at the gate. Reduced price tickets are available for children. The BMW corral has always had a waiting list in the past, so sign up

early to secure a place for your BMW. (Friday is a practice day for racers; no formal car corral activities are scheduled.) We’ll have a tent in the BMW corral for Club members to visit and to answer questions about the Club for potential members. We are looking for volunteers to help with set up on Saturday and tear

down on Sunday or to help out for an hour or so in the BMW tent; if you are interested, please indicate this on the registration form. To register send form below with a check and self-addressed, stamped #10 size envelope. Contact Lucetta Lightfoot at 206-282-2641 or [email protected] with questions.

May 2011 ZüNDFOLGE 9

The irreSiSTible urge To geT ouT on the roads as soon as possible, weather predictions notwithstanding, resulted in a collection of BMW Rally Teams as-sembling for the start of the BMW CCA Puget Sound Region 2011 Spring Penin-sula Rally in beautiful and historic Port Gamble. While there were a few teams with experience in past rally events, the majority of the contestants were new to the game. As always with Club mem-bers, they brought a sense of adventure, an enthusiasm for both cars and people, and most importantly a sense of good humor. When asked what prompted one team to participate in their first Rally, the answer was; “What’s not to like about driving around with a bunch of BMWs on great country roads?” This basically sums up everything we do as a Club. After introductions and a short brief-ing about Time/Speed/Distance Rally concepts by Rally-masters Ken Olsen and Doug Breithaupt, the cars were sent off at one-minute intervals to attack the first two sections. As we know, TSD rallying is all about accuracy, teamwork between driver and navigator and the all-important effort to stay on course and on time. The first, untimed transit stage allowed the teams to settle into a rhythm with the route instructions and to check for odometer variations over a ten-mile check section. Very quickly thereafter they were off on the first timed section which covered very rural and lightly used roads on the Toandos Peninsula, which juts into Hood Canal and in the vicinity of Quilcene. Right out of the box, Grady May and Tom Carlson in a grey M3 started

2011 Spring Peninsula Rally Recap

zeroing the check-points, averaging only a 10-second deviation from perfect time, followed closely by Alex and Pam Carpenter in another M3 who were collecting only one penalty point for each of the first two check-points. The performance of other teams was, shall we say, mixed, but surely the fun factor was high. Stage two took the teams northward to Discovery Bay, where once again May and Carson avoided penalty points by being within allowed time on the next two checks, but now the Carpen-ter team really picked up the pace and matched them with zeros as well. By this time other teams were getting the pro-gram down with zeros by Renninger and Shepherd, Palmer and Driscoll, Glass and Glass and Bennett and Bennett. Just to put that into perspective, this means that a car arrives at an unknown checkpoint after many miles of travel at a variety of assigned speeds on complex routes of public roads within twenty seconds on each side of a precisely predicted time! That is the ultimate in controlled driving. The sun came out just in time for the afternoon break and a visit to the Lassen Car Collection near Gardiner,

Wshington. This unique collection features several absolutely “one-off” Cadillacs and Lincolns from the years around the first and second World Wars. Each of the Cadillacs has extensive his-tory in the war effort, the centerpiece being the “Liberty Cadillac #A-57-704.” We encourage the reader to visit www.LibertyCadillac.com for the amaz-ing full story. Marc Lassen was also the featured speaker for the awards dinner at Manresa Castle on Saturday evening, where the teams got the full inside story. The collections visited by rally teams are not open to the public, and it is only by special invitation that we are able to offer these otherwise viewings to our members. Each rally event visits a dif-ferent private collection, and it is one of the unique benefits of participation. The afternoon saw two more timed sections completed as the teams wound their way around the Quimper Penin-sula and toward the finish at the host hotel, Manresa Castle in Port Townsend. Upon arrival in Port Townsend, the rally gathered at The Car Wash, a new auto detail shop and were treated to a car-care demo by Club member Paul Lytle. Moving on to Manresa Castle, cocktails and refreshments preceded a catered dinner, where the days’ adventures were recounted, and Marc Lassen shared his passion for automotive archaeology. If you imagine Harrison Ford in a quest for a hitherto undiscovered car, its very existence denied by Cadillac and GM for years, yet sitting in glorious docu-mented patina in a barn near Sequim, you start to get the picture.

Special thanks go to Dave Beddows who helped organize the route instruc-tions and check-point sheets, scored the rally and traveled down from Surrey, BC to provide staff support for the event. Additional check-point work was done by the four Breithaupt children as well as Rally-masters Doug Breithaupt and Ken Olsen, along with Ken’s wife Susan. Award plaques, appropriately mounted with model BMW cars, were presented to the top five teams. The skills gained at the 2011 Peninsula Rally can be put to immediate use at the 19th annual Classic Motorcar Rally, June 9-12, for an extraordinary rally among the Cascade Foothills, with the Hilton Inn of Issaquah as host hotel. This event covers up to 400 miles of the most scenic roads in East King County and is in the

tradition of the best European rallies. It will include a special stop/stage at the Dirtfish Rally School in Snoqualmie, WA and a visit to a very special car collection. The rally welcomes entries in the classic (pre-1975) and modern divisions. Rally sponsors include Annie and Steve Norman and this event is the sole annual fundraiser for the nonprofit College Planning Network, raising over $200,000 in the past thirteen years to help deserving students and families plan for college. Doug Breithaupt is the long-time Rally-master for this event and it has always had a strong BMW contingent. How to Keep GoingThis hobby is expensive. But the insur-ance issue has been a bit of a problem. Most individual auto policies now exclude track events. Luckily, we now have an alternative. BMW CCA and Lockton Risk Services are offering a High Performance Driv-ing Event policy on a single-event and multi-event basis. This allows you to sign up for coverage for the day of the event. You can sign up for the coverage on www.MotorsportsReg.com, the site that handles all our track event registration. There is a button to click on to add insurance for the event you are registering for. The policy will cover you for struc-tured HPDS events, no appraisal required and will cover vehicle modifications (I like that part). Make sure you read the complete article on insurance.

Oh, I almost forgot—don’t forget to register for our second CCC ($95) and HPDS ($195) events to be held June 10 at Pacific Raceway. See you at the track.

MOTOR SPORTSHow to Get StartedoFTen i am aSked by Club members how to get started in our track events. We try to make it easy so that more members will take advantage of this opportunity. So here is how to do it: First, you need to be a member of BMW CCA. If you’re reading Zündfolge, presumably you are. Second, if you have never participated in any of these events, you must go through a Car Con-trol Clinic (CCC) before a High Perfor-mance Driving School (HPDS). Third, sign up for an upcoming CCC on www.MotorsportsReg.com. You will need to set up an account there. Fourth, get a tech inspection done on your ve-hicle. Starting 2011 all you need is an an-nual tech inspection for the HPDS, none required for the CCC. There is a form on the Club website; on the left side of the home page click on Driving Schools and then click on High Performance Driving Schools. Any number of Zünd-folge advertisers will do the inspection for a nominal cost. Finally, show up the day of the event by about 7:30 a.m. If you have already been through a CCC, then sign up for a HPDS, the next step. With the CCCs you can drive a convertible and you will not need a helmet. For the HPDS you will need a helmet (although we do have loaners) and convertibles are not permitted.

The venerable checklist!

ChanCeS are good that I have written about this subject in the past, but admit-tedly, I cannot remember doing so, and chances are even better that if I don’t recall writing about it, then you, faith-ful reader, probably don’t remember reading about it! Having dispensed with the disclaimers then, let’s get down to business. The PRO3 ranks this year are abuzz with new talent and new cars ready to take to the track. Novice license applica-tions have been flooding into the ICSCC Registrar’s mailbox like campaign contributions at a union luncheon and there are sure to be more as the spring track days increase in frequency. This is

a good thing. Fresh blood (so to speak) into Conference and PRO3 helps to increase the enthusiasm in general and boosts attendance at local races. It also offers a really cool opportunity for those of us that have been around the track a few times to offer up some sage advice to the new guy setting up camp next to you in the paddock. Remember your first Conference race? I’m sure you were cool, calm, and collected the first time, weren’t you? Nary a second thought entered your steely-eyed mind about just what the heck did you get yourself into here? No sir! Not you! But that may not be the case for the person you don’t recognize fiddling with the car you haven’t seen before sporting a 300-series number.

Bob Mearns was my first race day mentor. The very first thing he offered up to me was a solid handshake and a hearty, “Welcome to PRO3!” The second thing he offered up was his help and guidance to put my mind at ease during that hectic Saturday. I’m sure he will grow tired of me telling the same old trope about how he climbed into my car to escort me down to pregrid and gave me his pointers on what I was about to encounter. Too bad, Bob! It’s a good story and is relevant as much today as it was six years ago. Now Bob is the License Director for Conference and I must say, our newest racers will be in very good hands. We can all help Bob in his tasks by doing the exact same thing he did for me;

The PRO3 Line

Page 17: Zündfolge - Amazon S3 · 2017. 11. 26. · Storch and a Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-3. The Focke-Wulf Fw190 was a single-seater fighter with a radial engine, designed in the late 1930s

offer up your hand in welcoming our newest racers and extend the offer for help/parts/advice, etc. The impression we leave on our new racers will carry for-ward and will pay dividends to everyone in Conference. It is very easy to become overwhelmed with what is happening around you at a race event, and having someone to turn to with questions is a welcome thought. Obviously, this first part was directed to our Senior Drivers (as defined by the license held, not by your age!) so this second part is directed squarely at the new racers as well as anyone new to track days. The best piece of advice I can give anyone new to motorsports participa-tion is to attend an event ahead of time if possible. Not for participation, but just to see what happens. Look for things like where is Driver Services located? Where does the License Director setup his tent? What are people bringing to the event in the way of tools, food, cano-pies, etc? Where do people park? These are pretty basic questions, but believe me, when you show up with a trailer in tow (hopefully with the car still attached) it makes a big difference if you have some idea of what to expect rather than just showing up ‘cold.’ Ask questions too! Everyone in the paddock will have an answer and generally has the time to share that answer.

Second piece of advice: USE A CHECKLIST

You will forget things. Important things that you thought would never be over-looked, “Oh, I’ll never forget to torque my wheels.” Or, “I’ll always have my balaclava with me.” Be sure to refer to that checklist often and with plenty of time before you are due to go on track. You have enough to be concerned with during a race weekend that you don’t need to add to it the stress of forgetting a vital piece of race gear! I’ve been using a checklist from day-one of racing and between my crew and I, we have made annual improvements and refinements to that checklist. You can make yours as complicated as you like, if that’s what gets you excited, or you can make it as basic as you need (rumor has it that Greg “Grandpa” Miller prints his in large font…he is a senior driver after all.) Regardless of what it looks like, USE IT!! The most basic of checklists should include sections for your own personal safety equipment (driver gear—itemize it), the car and its safety checks (like ‘torque the wheels’), and those items necessary to complete a race effectively (fuel the car, check air pressures, check oil, etc.) In the Reaper camp, we have a few odd bits included on the list and that list is broken down to various trigger times.

There’s the general car list: torque the lug nuts, check oil, battery, brake fluid, pressures in the tires, etc. Then there’s the “Before leaving for Pregrid” section that includes a check of all my driver gear, arm the fire bottle, radio check, etc. Once at pregrid, there’s the “Five-Minute Warning” list that includes starting the video camera and giving me a piece of gum (yes, that’s on the list! It helps me focus on driving…) Then finally, the One-Minute Warning items: “Oil Pressure” as indicated to my crew chief over the radio. In honor of Frank Greif, the exchange goes something like, “Car is running and maple syrup is ris-ing,” indicating to my crew that the car, the driver, and the engine are ready to pull out on track. Your results may vary, but this is a great way to help keep you on-task and focused before climbing into your car. Believe me; you will need all the help you can get on that first race weekend. The good news is that it gets easier as you go and the fun factor increases accordingly as well! Good luck and I’ll see you at the track!

And with gas prices approaching the absurd, it seems like a good time for a shorter, half day tour. Join Club members on Saturday June 4 for a tour exploring the back roads of East King County. After a morning filled with twisty roads, we will end this tour in Woodinville at Forecaster’s Pub in the Redhook Brewery for lunch. Plan on meeting at 9 a.m. in the parking lot of The Commons Mall, on 320th in Federal Way. To get there, take

June 4Cascade Foothills Tourexit 143 off of I-5, and go west for a few blocks. The mall will be on your left. After a short drivers meeting, we will depart at 9:30 sharp. There haS alwayS been a kinShiP between the aerodynamic designs of fast aircraft and fast automobiles. These characteristics often grow from one industry to the other. Exotic machines of the ground and sky also share a com-mon beauty of design as well. On the afternoon of May 14, 2011 these shared qualities will be on display at the Museum of Flight at Boeing Field. An assortment of exotic automobiles will be on hand from Noon until 3 in the Museum’s parking lot. The exhibition is free to the public; admission to the Museum of Flight is separate from this event.

The Event . . . This event will demonstrate the aerody-namic similarities between exotic cars and aircraft. The regional exotic car community will be displaying a large variety of exotic and rare automobiles. Unique automobiles such as Lambo-rghinis, Ferraris, Porches, Teslas, and

more … plus the world’s fastest produc-tion super-car—the Ultimate Aero— will be on display. This event will not only showcase these incredible automobiles but it will also benefit area animal shelters and rescue groups. Too often dogs and cats are abandoned by their owners. Animal shelters and pet rescue groups work tirelessly to find hope and homes for these creatures. Many are volunteers who are working out of the kindness of their hearts. Representatives from Homeward Pet Rescue, Shelter, and Adoption will be on site to give out information and to accept donations.

About Me . . .“My name is Alex Bergler and I am in my senior year at Aviation High School. For my senior project I have planned an event that will combine three of my pas-sions, aircraft, exotic cars, and animals. Since I was just a toddler I have always loved aircraft. Most of my childhood memories are filled with attending air shows and spending a lot of time at the Museum of Flight, I joke that the Museum became my second home. My plans and dreams have always involved flight. As I started high school I began to seriously pursue my dreams of flight by starting flight lessons at Boeing Field. As I studied aerodynamics and design I soon became enamored with another great passion and beauty, exotic auto-mobiles. Now the passing sound of a Ferrari evokes the same excitement and awe as that of an F/A-18 takeoff. From my earliest memories animals have al-ways been an important part of my life. My family and I have always been very animal friendly. So when I was select-ing an endeavor to pursue for a senior project it really made sense to combine my passions into something which will positively contribute to my community.”
