Before you come to study at the Tomas Bata Univer-sity in Zlín, you will need to submit the followingdocuments:
APPLICATION FORMComplete the form in block letters and send it to the Interna-tional Affairs Department of the University or to the faculty.Do not forget to include your e-mail address and yourpassport size photo.
LEARNING AGREEMENTChoose appropriate courses or a project offered by thefaculty or the department where you are going to study.Have the Agreement signed by your home departmentand university coordinators and send it together with yourApplication Form to the University International AffairsDepartment.For more information on the offered courses and projectsdo not hesitate to contact the teachers responsible forbilateral agreements between the relevant faculties.
Both forms should be available from the InternationalAffairs Department of your home university. If not, you candownload them from our website – www.utb.czMake sure you submit the forms 90 days ahead of yourplanned arrival to allow sufficient time for all formalitiesto be completed.

STUDENT VISAAccording to the Czech Law, all foreign students study-ing in the country need a student visa. Contact theCzech Embassy or consulate in your home country for
information on latest visa requirements. It is no longerpossible to apply for a visa in the Czech Republic. Youhave to hold a student visa when arriving in the country.You will need about 2 months to complete this procedure.Besides the application form, the following additionaldocuments are required:
A) For a stay of up to 90 daysLetter of acceptance (issued by the TBU InternationalAffairs Department on getting your application form andlearning agreement) Proof of income (the Socrates/Erasmus grant confirmationletter or a bank account statement) Confirmation of accommodation (enclosed to the letterof acceptance)Proof of health insurance (must be translated into Czechand notarised) Passport size photoPassport (valid for at least 90 days beyond the expirydate of your visa)
B) For a stay of over 90 daysyou will need all the above listed documents plus:Confirmation of absence of criminal record in yourhome countryConfirmation of a clean record from the Czech Criminal

Record Register (confirming that the applicant has nocriminal record in the Czech Republic). All the documents must be written in Czech or translatedinto Czech by an authorised translator. Some consulatesprovide translation verification for a small charge. Allforms are available from Czech consulates and embassies,and need to be completed in Czech language.You can download an example of the form from our website.
HEALTH INSURANCEStudents are strongly advised to get health and travelinsurance prior to coming to the Czech Republic. Inmost cases, visitors to the Czech Republic, including EU
citizens, are NOT covered by the Czech Health InsurancePlan. Please consult your health insurance company aboutthe necessary steps. The Czech Republic generally recog-nizes all kinds of health insurance schemes valid in the EU.
ISIC – INTERNATIONAL STUDENT IDENTITY CARDYou should obtain your Student Identity Card (ISIC) fromyour home university or in your home country. This cardwill allow you to benefit from student reductions for
such things as the public transport pass, most museumand theatre tickets, and many bus, rail and air fares.

BY AIRZlín does not have its own airport. The air gate to the CzechRepublic is the Prague International Airport (PRG) which hasdaily connection from/to major European cities. Anotherpossibility is to fly to Vienna – Austria, which is actually closerto Zlín (220 km) than Prague (300 km). From both citiesthere are direct connections to Zlín either by train or by bus.
BY TRAINThe Czech Republic has an extensive railway networkwhich is operated by the state railway company ČeskéDráhy (ČD). It is easy to get to the Czech Republic from allmajor European cities by train. Rail station Otrokovice(10 km from the centre of Zlín) is on the main rail routenumber 330 (Vienna) – Břeclav – Otrokovice – Přerov,with a connection in Přerov to route number 270 Prague– Ostrava – (Warsaw). The town of Zlín and its industrialzones are connected to the local railway route number335 Otrokovice – Zlín Central – Vizovice by a shuttle train.
BY BUSIn addition to the extensive railway network there is a densenetwork of coach lines. Its long distance coaches tend to be faster, more frequent and even cheaper than trains. The Czech Republic has connection from/to major European

cities several times a week. Most international buses arriveto Prague (Florenc – Main Station) or to Brno. There are several buses a day running to Zlín from Prague or Brno.
BY CARZlín is connected with the chief centres of the CzechRepublic through a motorway I/49, which is attached to thestate motorway network (Vyškov 70 km) in the direction ofBrno – Prague and Ostrava. The connection of Zlín into thestate motorway network is planned for the year 2005,extending the existing route D1 Praha – Brno – Kroměříž,to connect Zlín with the border of the Slovak Republic. Inthe same period the motorway I/50 (Vienna) – Břeclav –Uherské Hradiště – Otrokovice – Přerov – Ostrava shouldbe reconstructed and expanded, interconnecting theregion in the north – south direction.

ACCOMMODATIONYour accommodation is arranged by yourhost faculty. To have your rooms reservedin time, send your accommodation applica-
tion form in time and keep in touch with yourhost faculty representatives.
The TBU internationalstudents are usuallyhoused in the UniversityHalls of Residence inZlín.
Accommodation is pro-vided in twin rooms: two twin rooms with anen suite bathroom andkitchenette. The rooms are fur-nished. Bed linen is pro-vided. In winter you canget one extra blanket.There are basic kitchenutensils available, and itis easy and inexpensiveto buy some necessary things in local shops.
When you enter TBU Halls of Residence, you will be givena contract to sign. It includes rules and regulations thatapply at the residence. Upon your request we can find youaccommodation in private.

REFECTORYAll students can buy meals in the Refectory(Menza), which is located in the building U4.
Meals are served Monday to Friday.Lunch 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.Dinner 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.The meals are not pre-ordered.
The TBU studentcard must be"charged" by a cer-tain amount ofmoney prior to itsfirst use. The mini-mum amount forcharging the cardis 100 CZK (for stu-dents). You can getthe card chargedat the cash desk atthe end of theserving line. Forquick charging,please try to paythe exact amountof money you want to charge your card with. With thesmart card, the payment for the food is done automati-cally with every meal taken. The card can also be charged at the ComplaintsDepartment from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every weekday.

LIBRARYThe Central Library fulfils its function as a Rectorate-directed Information Workplace of TBU, assuring accessto comprehensive catalogues, and to selected electronicinformation resources in the Study Rooms. It provides off-site and on-site services to its clients, the reservationdocuments, circulation services, inter-library service.Except the Central Library which is located at the building U4,there are 12 Departmental Libraries.
COMPUTER FACILITIES The University has manycomputer facilities avail-able for the use of bothCzech and foreign stu-dents. It is possible to getan e-mail address onlyafter having registered asan international gueststudent.
COMPUTERS AND STUDY ROOMSComputer facilities are situated in each university building.The main computer and study rooms are situated in thebasement of the building U2 and on the second floor in the University's Central Library, the building U4 and on thefifth floor in the Faculty of Technology, the building U1. Toenter these rooms you need a TBU Student ID Card as wellas your login and password to use the computers.
The Computer Room at the Library is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Monday to Thursdayfrom 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday

ACCOUNT AND E-MAIL ADDRESSOnce you have received your TBU student card, you canapply for a computer account and an e-mail address.You will then have an access to the e-mail, internet andall regular programmes.To open a computer account, a form setting out all regula-tions relating to both the computer facilities and the use ofyour e-mail account etc. has to be signed.
COPY CENTERFor the convenience of students there is a copy machinelocated in each faculty building and in the Central Library(ground floor). For using the machine, a small fee will bededucted from your TBU Student ID Card.

The Tomas Bata University owns a sports centre atJižní Svahy (U5), where you will find 2 gyms and a fit-ness centre. Another university fitness centre is in theHalls of Residence (U10). As a member of the universitySports Club you can use these facilities at any time duringthe week. Students can take part in any organized activiti-es listed bellow:Aerobic, Body-building, Swimming, Floorball, Volley-ball, Softball, Skiing, Windsurfing, Basketball, Hiking,Climbing, Soccer, Taek-wondo, Squash.
LEAVING TBU IN ZLÍNBefore you leave the Tomas Bata University in Zlín, thereare a few things to remember to do:see the Faculty coordinator to obtain all output paperssee the International Affairs Department to return the TBUStudent ID Card and to obtain your outgoing papers sign out at the Halls of Residence and get a refund ofyour deposit (if applicable) return all the books and/or any other materials you bor-rowed from the Faculty or Central Libraryif necessary, confirm your flight

CURRENCYThe Czech currency is called”koruna“ (crown, abbreviatedKč), which is made up of 100
haléřů (hellers, abbreviated hal.).Coins in the following denomina-tions are in circulation: 1 crown, 2 crowns, 5 crowns, 10 crownsand 20 crowns. In addition thereare the following bank notes: 20 crowns, 50 crowns, 100crowns, 200 crowns, 500 crowns,1,000 crowns, 2,000 crowns and5,000 crowns.
MONEY MATTERSThe cost of living is low in theCzech Republic compared toother European countries, andyou will be able to live comfort-ably without spending largesums. Cash dispensers are gen-erally the easiest and cheapestway to manage money here, andthere is a number of them located conveniently throughoutthe Zlín town center. You can also pay by credit card inmost stores.
Foreign currency can be exchanged at any bank or moneyexchange office, though you might check around to seewhich one gives the best exchange rate, since these canvary a little.

EMERGENCY SERVICESThroughout the Czech Republic, there is one set of emer-gency telephone numbers for use in case of fire, the urgentneed of an ambulance, or the police. These are as follows:

EMERGENCYIf you are faced with an urgent need for medical attentionat a time when doctors' offices are not open, and you areconfined to bed, call the first-aid service at 577 214 445or 577 214 446; a doctor will come to examine you withina very short time. In other cases, you should go in personto the emergency service at the hospital Baťova nemoc-nice, Havlíčkovo nábřeží 600. Emergency dental care isalso available at the same address.Take the trolleybus number 2, 8 or 9 and get off at thestop Nemocnice /Hospital/.
PHARMACIESMost of the medicines available elsewhere canbe obtained here, though not in every pharmacy.Nevertheless, you are strongly recommended tobring medication you will use during your stay in Zlín. Unfor-tunately, there is no non-stop pharmacy in Zlín. The mostconvenient is the pharmacy located in the Golem centrum(open till 10 p.m.), or the one at the Interspar shopping mall.

POLICEThere are two separate police forces in the Czech Republic,the National Police Forces (Policie České republiky) and theMunicipal Police Forces (Městská policie). The Czech Policedeal with such areas as criminal activities, road traffic(accidents, fines and so on), and visas for foreigners. TheMunicipal Police have certain limited powers to maintainlaw and order within the town or city.Violent crime is still rare by the standards of WesternEurope or the United States, but there is a great deal oftheft. Be alert to the danger of pickpockets in crowdedplaces. However, Zlín is a very safe town.
POSTAL AND TELEPHONE SERVICEMost post offices are only open on weekdays. Buystamps at the post office or from newsstands. Postedletters go into the orange boxes around the city.Most public telephones in the Czech Republic no longeraccept coins but must be operated with a prepaid phonecard, which can be bought at post offices and at mostnewsstands. Phone cards are suitable for local, long dis-tance, and international calls. The best way to callabroad is to use the xCall program. Dial 952 + 00 +country code + area code + phone number. Your phone callwill be cheaper if you call off-peak, i.e. from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m.on weekdays, and any time on weekends or holidays. Youcan also use a pre-paid phone card called xCard, whichcan be used for calling from any phone within the CzechRepublic. Remember that all prepaid phone cards expire12 months after the first use. To call out of the CzechRepublic dial 00 followed by the country code, areacode and the number. For the international operator, dial1181. The country code for the Czech Republic is 420.

GEOGRAPHYThe Czech Republic, as a part of Central Europe, issqueezed between Germany, Austria, Slovakia andPoland. The country is bordered by the mountains. Its areais almost 79,000 sq. km (30,000 sq. miles), the same sizeas the island of Ireland. The highest point is the Sněžka,1,602 m (5,222 ft). The capital, Prague, is just in the middleof the western part of the country, 300 m above sea level.
PEOPLEThere are about 10 million people living in the CzechRepublic (out of it 1.3 million in Prague). Most of them areCzechs and they speak Czech language. They tend to bepolite, mild-mannered with a good sense of humour, notinclined to arguments or fights. They are intelligent, cre-ative, well educated, and can be quite conservative. Youngpeople tend to be more proficient in foreign languages.The largest Church is the Roman Catholic but Czechs aremostly atheists, due to the systematic oppression of reli-gion during Communism.
CLIMATECzech is a four-seasoned country with a continental cli-mate. The summers tend to be sunny and quite hot, the winters cold, the springs and falls are mild butchangeable. Weather forecast is available at CNN.

Zlín lies along the riverDřevnice in a mild climaticarea of the south-easternMoravia. It is also a cross-road for the ethnographic boundaries of the Wallachian,Haná and Moravian Slovak regions. Today, the town hasa population of 85,000, and is the seat of the ZlínRegion. The town is the seat of several governmentoffices, as well as of cultural and social institutions. Onefacet of the town’s character is its unique functionalistarchitecture. Zlín is also the birthplace of the founder of

the Bata Shoe concern, Tomas Bata. The typical Bataarchitecture enables city quarters lying in close proximi-ty to the centre to create landscaped greenery. It is pos-sible to reach the extensive and well-maintained cityparks and forests in just a few minutes walk from anyplace in the centre. That is why Zlín is also called the Cityof Greenery.

Information centreThe town of Zlín operates the Information and Tourist centreat the square nám. Míru 12, in the lobby of the Town Hall.It has a wide selection of maps, brochures and otherinformation materials on Zlín and its region, and also actsas a ticket agency, selling tickets for a number of culturalevents.
Zlín public transportPublic transport in Zlín includes buses, trolleybuses andtrains. To use public transport you need a valid ticket(stamped in a red machine immediately after getting on

the vehicle) or a travel card. Individual tickets can be pur-chased at many stands, in some shops, in ticket machinesat stops. You can also buy a ticket from the driver but it ismore expensive.All the university buildings are located in the walking dis-tance from the University Halls of Residence.There is a possibility to obtain a cheaper monthly studenttransportation card (only if you are under 26). To get thestudent travel card you need 1 passport-size photograph,ISIC card or other proof that you are a student (collect atInternational Affairs Department) and the address of yourstay in Zlín.

CULTUREZlín has always had a strong culturalheritage. Two traditional city institu-tions are the Municipal Theatre inZlín and the Bohuslav Martinů Phil-harmonic Orchestra. There are alsomany other institutions - the DistrictGallery, Museum of South-easternMoravia, the alternative theatreMalá Scéna, Shoe Museum, ClassicCar Museum, and dozens of privategalleries, folklore ensembles, modernrock clubs, and art agencies.The International Film Festival for Children and Youth hastaken place in Zlín annually since 1961. It is an importantevent, attracting the leading film actors and actresses,producers and media not only from the Czech Republicbut also from abroad. It is held annually in May.
SPORTSZlín offers a wide range of sporting and recreationalopportunities. The town of Zlín also provides severalsporting facilities, including indoor and outdoor swim-ming pools, ice skating ring, artificial skiing slope, squashfacilities, tennis courts, golf courses and bowling alleys.There are also great opportunities for hiking, cycling,horse riding, and fishing. The region has thousands ofkilometres of marked hiking paths and trails designed forall age groups. The international Moravian Cycling Routepasses through the region. Visitors can also try out boatingon the Bata canal.
Zlín also holds several prestigious sports events. Let usmention at least two of them. In autumn it is the first of thefour tournaments of the European Ice-Hockey Tour, and insummer thousands of people watch Barum Rally – Euro-pean Rally Championship, which runs through the townand its surroundings.

BuchlovThe beginnings of this castle date back to the first half ofthe 13th century. Today's interior furnishings, together witha collection of specimens from nature and an extensivelibrary, document the evolution of interior design andlifestyles between the 15th and the 19th centuries.
BuchloviceThe baroque chateau Buchlovice was built in the fashion ofan Italian villa at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. Theoriginal Italian Baroque garden was extended by a large nat-ural romantic park with numerous plantings of indigenousand exotic tree species, which represent one of the mostimportant dendrological collections in the Czech lands.

Rožnovpod RadhoštěmRožnov pod Rad-hoštěm is well knownfor its open-air muse-um of rural architecture,the oldest in CentralEurope. Rožnov, originally a spa,is a popular holidayresort in the Beskydymountains, a startingpoint of hiking tours,and the centre of Wal-lachia region.
LuhačoviceThe town of Luhačovice is the largest spa town in Moravia,lying on the slopes of the White Carpathians. The town isfamous for its mineral springs, which form the foundationfor the spa system. The town of Luhačovice offers ideal con-ditions for rest, relaxation, cultural life, and health regenera-tion. Exquisite natural surroundings, a pleasant atmosphereand typical architecture are the chief assets of the city.

KroměřížThe town, also called "Hana's Athens" because of itsbeautiful historic landmarks, is an exciting example of dif-ferent architectural styles and cultural history. Kroměříž
was proclaimed the nicest historical town of the CzechRepublic in 1997. Its complex of historical gardens and theArchbishopric Chateau are included on the UNESCOWorld Heritage List.

VizoviceA small town in Moravian Wallachia. In the town there isthe Castle of Vizovice with a French-style garden, fur-nished interiors, and a large collection of works of art.
ZOO Lešná The Zoo in Zlín is one of the most beautiful zoological gar-dens in the Czech Republic. Within the bio-park of moderndesign, there are spacious exhibitions where mammals andbirds of various species coexist in harmony. Visitors can seeover 200 species of animals. One of the most dominatingfeatures of the Zoo is the Lešná Chateau, built in Art Nou-veau style in 1887 to 1894.

LukovCastle Lukov is located almost two kilometres north of thevillage of the same name, at the southern end of the Hos-tynsky Highlands, which, because of their natural assets,favourable climate and romantic scenery, are among themost popular tourist areas of Southeast Moravia. Thecastle itself is one of the most significant and largestmedieval fortified structures in Moravia.
