    PASTORS PIECE

    A CALL FOR GENEROSITY!

I've walked in CROP all my life. TheHunger Walk is an event to look forward to, as itbrings the world closer together in its efforts of con-nection, compassion, interfaith, intergeneration andlove. CROP is an acronym for Christian Rural Over-seas Program, and it began in post-World War II

1947 in an effort to encourage Midwest farm familiesto share their grain with hungry European and Asianneighbors. CROP is sponsored by Church WorldService (CWS), and although it has grown way be-yond its original meaning, the acronym is retained forits historical value. CROP Hunger Walks don't justhelp people overseas; 25% of funds raised comeback to our own communities. Two-thousand com-munities across the US join together in 1,600 hungerwalks each year. Our minds are drawn to our fellow human beings--where we live in such abundance, there are so many

who don't have access to much of anything withoutour help. That frustrates us because the world con-tains the resources to feed and clothe every humanbeing who inhabits it! Unfortunately as well, we wholive in the "land of abundance" often get distracted byour own needs, our cultural demands, and some-times even our own survival. Please know that I'mspeaking of myself first and foremost as being drawnto distraction!God calls us through Jesus Christ to care for one an-other. Jesus reminds us that when we feed the hun-gry, provide water for the thirsty, and clothe the na-ked, we are also doing this to him. We are emissar-ies of God's grace and strength and love. Here in theUnited States we have many advantages that thosein other countries do not. Through CWS and CROPwe go beyond just providing food and water. Wereach out with education and tools to help ourneighbors become more sustainable. Together wedig wells and create water systems. We plant seedsin both the ground and in the hearts of those wantingto make a difference in the world.

    CREATIVE FAITH PROJECT

Zion UCC is one of 12 churches chosen to join inthe year-long Creative Faith Project, thanks to abeautiful and informative letter written by ourown Teresa Begemann. Four or five of us willattend four day-long workshops in Columbia,

which are geared to create renewal in Worshipwithin the church. Participants, including myself, are Diane Wagner, Teresa Begemann, CarrieBegemann, and Bill Bainbridge (who is an excel-lent driver ). The first workshop was Saturday,September 17, where the climax of the day wasbeing separated into groups of new faces, andbeing given 15 minutes to design a creative ex-pression of an assigned Scripture, the same forall four groups. We were given instructions tolisten to and affirm one another's ideas, "yes,and...". Each group proceeded to create in sepa-

rate classrooms, with an assortment of propsavailable, based upon elements of Worship--"Pause"; "Imagine"; "Create"; and "Become". Wehad the same subject matter and four completelydifferent and very effective liturgical expressionsrepresented at the beginning of our closing Wor-ship. It was incredible, and permission-giving.We grew in relationship with each other, withWorship, and with our fellow churches involved. Also, there will be two experiences of "Come andSee", where the rest of our congregation is in-vited to participate in a workshop/experience in

Jefferson City. The first "Come and See" will beSaturday, October 29, and it will be very worth it.This is sponsored through a grant from CalvinCollege in Grand Rapids, MI, and includes localteam members, as well as members from ourhome office in Cleveland, OH. Please see me formore details, and be patient as I continue towork on getting organized!Blessings and love in Christ,Pastor Kristin

AT THE HEART OF MY FAITH ISAN INVITATION FROM JEFF WHITMAN

For 19 years of my life, school started the dayafter Labor Day and that meant new classesand new books and homework assignments andrenewing friendships with classmates. As a local

church pastor the rhythm of life in the churchpicked up after Labor Day as committees beganmeeting again, special worship services neededto planned, the choir returned from their sum-mer hiatus, Sunday schools began to fill up,people returned to the pews. Here in our confer-ence office in the first weeks following LaborDay we will begin planning for our ConferenceAnnual Gathering next June; we are finalizingour plans for the Persons in Ministry Retreat(have you registered for this years retreat?);and we are making plans for the first meeting of

the Conference Council the end of September.

Before we leave the waning days of the summerof 2011, I invite you to linger for a moment withthe memories of summer. What will you takewith you, what will you remember the most fromthe summer of 2011? For some it may be theheat, for others the memories of the GeneralSynod in Tampa, for others a special vacationor time with family and friends, for others thedeath of a loved one while for others the wed-ding of a child. For me the memory that contin-

ues to tug at my soul in the quiet of the night isnot the two weeks I spent in Alaska, althoughthat was a wonderful time, but an encounter thatbegan quite by accident.

I was preparing for General Synod the last weekin June and I just happened to log on to Face-book for a few moments to check some mes-sages when a message popped up on myscreen. A friend asked if I would be willing to

join a delegation of religious leaders from thesecond congressional district to deliver a mes-

sage to my congressman Todd Akin.

I am a constituent of Mr. Akins district and afew days before he made this public statement:At the heart of liberalism is a hatred of God anda desire to replace God with government.

I was deeply troubled by a statement that I consid-ered not only wrong but offensive, and the next dayI joined a group of local UCC and other clergy andlay people from Mr. Akins district to deliver a re-sponse, request an apology, and ask for a meetingwith our congressman. He was not there and in thetwo months since that visit he has refused repeatedrequests to meet with us.

On one level I was angry at what I regard as an-other example of an elected official caricaturing andmarginalizing a group of his constituents for his ownpolitical gain. His statement not only fails to ac-knowledge the deep religious commitment and thecontributions of mainline liberal Protestants to theircommunities and our nation; it also strips away theirhumanity and gathers them into a nameless, face-less group that can be hated by those who sharehis political point of view. As I said in my interviewwith the press, I believe that we have a right to ex-

pect that our elected officials will represent and re-spect the views of all of their constituents--not onlythose with whom they agree.

On a deeper level I am really troubled by that state-ment, "At the heart of liberalism is a hatred of Godand a desire to replace God with government. Ihear that statement and I think of the abolitionistswho worked to end slavery and the farmers whoopened their homes to be used as part of the Un-derground Railroad God haters? I rememberthose who worked for voting rights for women,

those who worked to improve working conditions inthe coal mines of Pennsylvania, the steel mills andgarment factories across our nation, and the meatpacking plants of the upper mid west and the mi-grant farm workers of California did they do thisout of hatred for God?

I think of those who walk in CROP walks, buildhouses for Habitat, volunteer in soup kitchens, andraise money for flood relief or those who built placeslike Evangelical Childrens Home, or EmmausHome, or Bethany Childrens Home, - it is an of-fense not only to their contributions to society but tothe level of their religious commitment and thedepth of their faith to label them God haters.

Those of us in the United Church of Christ are partof a liberal religious tradition that stretches backhundreds of years to the work of the first protestantreformers. When Mr. Akins and others like himmake the statement, At the heart of liberalism is ahatred of God and a desire to replace God with gov-ernment; he is talking about us, you and me, ourparents and grandparents, our pastors and SundaySchool teachers and those who passed the faith

    The Lamplighter

along to us. I believe he has it all wrong. If Mr.Akin is wrong, then what is at the heart of yourfaith, of your discipleship?

I want to invite you to reflect on the core values ofyour faith and then answer this question:At the heart of my faith is

Please email [email protected] me your re-sponses and in a few weeks I want to share whatyou have said in our eCourier. I look forward tohearing from you.Excerpt MMSUCC eCourier Aug. 30, 2011
