A subject of many posts on social media can encourage people to imitate what is currently popular. A trend can be a reflection of fashion in style, culture, or entertainment. Some trends are fun and appealing but they don’t last forever. There are always new ones to replace the old.

The Hashtag Everywhere A long time ago the hashtag was a symbol that was commonly known as the number sign in the world of social media and crisscrossing lines used to play tic-tac-toe. Hashtags were originally used in twitter but also coppied by others, who picked up on the trend. They can be used in all sorts of ways on the web. It’s content can be on specific themes or keywords that makes search-ing better to discover. Hashtags phrases and other strings of texts and letters that track top-ics and conversations. A hashtag can be a mood that a person is feeling and or thinking about. For example you could say #sad, and #sistersavage. They are both explaining the emotions a person is feeling. It has become associated with discus-sion, and as a good opportunity for business owners and digital marketers.

The Ripped JeansThis fashion trend signifies a sense of style. Most teenage girls and boys wear their pants ripped. The cost for these types of pants is higher than the original standard pants. Why buy them ripped when you can do it yourself? Denim is now less likely to rip than the lightweight fabric that is used to make non-ripped jeans.

MemesMemes are captioned photos that are intended to be funny. They are created as a way for people to pass social memories to each other. A meme can explain a general idea on a subject that a person is trying to share with others. Although they can be funny they can also be extremely hurtful and disrespectful. People should be aware of what they are posting or how they are captioning photos.

Trends are coming and going, there is always a way for them to come back. They are a big thing in our society today; they are all in the eye of the me-dia. Trends can be funny but also hurtful, so we need to be careful how there used.

Have you ever heard of Stranger Things? The Netflix series is definitely one to talk about. The show is science fiction-horror, and was written, created, and even directed by the Duffer Broth-ers, Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen. The main cast members include Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven, Gaten Matarazzo as

Dustin, Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas, Finn Wolfhard as Mike, and Noah Schnapp as Will.

The setting of the show takes place in Hawkins, Indiana. This city is a made up town that the Duffer Brother created. The show actually was filmed in Jack-son, Georgia. I think it was creative to make a new town.

Millie Bobby brown, was in shows including “Once Upon a Time,” and “NCIS.” Finn Wolfhard was also recognized for his role in “It.” These cast members are currently working on season three of Stranger Things, that is coming out in 2019.

I am reviewing the show Stranger Things, so I will tell you about my opinion on the show. For now I will tell you a brief summary on what is going on. The main events in the story start when one night a child named Will is kidnapped by someone or something. His family and friends are going out and trying to find him. On the way, they meet a character Eleven, she has a shaved head and seems to be scared. The friends look-ing for Will include Mike, Lucas, and Dustin. They take Eleven home because she is lost, scared, and hungry.

The show Stranger Things is one to recognize. This is a science-fiction horror show. I can see the show involves science because of the testing that takes place. They perform tests on kids who have supernatural abili-

ties. There is also horror because we do not know what took Will. While it is a horror show, I think easily scared people would be scared. For me it wasn’t too scary, unless I watched it in the dark by myself.

If I would compare it to any movie or show I think it relates to the movie A Quiet Place. A Quiet Place is a movie where there are monsters that have sen-sitive ears. If you make noise the mon-sters will kill you. In my opinion it relates to Stranger Things because like I haven’t mentioned yet, there are monsters, too. The monsters look similar in both films.

This movie is supposed to have taken place in the 1980s. They wear clothes, play games, and eat food that were in the 80s. Therefore, I think I could compare it to other films shot or por-trayed at that time. Another series on Netflix related to Stranger Things is a tiny bit like Riverdale because they are both dramatic. All in all, this show is not like others.

Now about my review, I am a very curious person, and I hated not knowing who or what took Will. Overall, it let me use my own brain to guess what it was that took Will, and where Eleven came from. I enjoyed it, and I didn’t want to do anything other than watch it. Also, they did a good job keeping the story a mys-tery, but still happy, and exciting.

I would give Stranger Things a four out of five because some parts were more exciting than others. I would defi-nitely recommend it, too. I love this show and can’t wait for more episodes and seasons.

Teens spend around nine hours a day on their phones on average, that’s a lot of time. Although phones have some good aspects too, spending this much time on your phone can affect your brain and your speech. Most teens spend at least an hour on social media each day. Only 6% of 13 - 18 year-olds do not have social me-dia. In addition, phones cause teens to cheat on exams by texting and searching for answers. These phones also distract teens from important events in their life. Texting while driving is also a problem, and can be life threatening . Phones may cause problems, but there are good features of being attached to your phone as well.

Phones give us quick access to the internet which helps with studies for school and simple ques-tions. Some phones may have tracking devices, so if you always have your phone with you, parents can see what you’re doing and where you are all the time. Phones also help children and parents stay in touch as well as teach children about responsibility. Although it is good to have your phone, spend-ing too much time on it can cause serious brain dam-age. Phone addiction has become a disease known as nomophobia. When you are away from your phone you experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, impulse control problems and sleep disorders. Magnetic Reso-nance Spectroscopy ( MRS ) tracks the movement of biochemicals in the brain. The MRS is usually used for Alzheimer’s disease, brain tumors and certain mood disorders. Recently, MRS has found increased levels of anxiety and depression due to chemical imbalances in the brain. According to scientists, a certain neurotrans-mitter in the brain ( the anterior cingulate cortex ) has a higher activity which is causing an effect on emotions and cognitive ability. Phone over usage and addiction has affected our brains, however, phone addiction can also have an impact on our grammar and speech. The addiction to phones also has an affect on teens speech. Phones cause teens to be anti-social, loose patience quickly, use incorrect spelling, incorrect gram-mar, and limits face to face interaction. You probably got your phone in 6th grade, but now parents think it is necessary to give children phones as early as 5 years old. Spending this much time of your life on a phone

means that teens can not handle face to face conflict because they interact using their phones. The lack of face to face con-flict causes us to be anti-social and lose patience faster. Phones give us immedi-ate access to anything we want and now whenever we have to wait for something, we get anxious. Phones don’t just affect our social interaction, they also affect our spelling and grammar. Since texting is our main source of communication, we use abbreviations to speak to others. We add extra letters, extra words, smiley faces as punctuation and mess up proper gram-mar skills all due to phone over usage. Texting can ease our way of communi-cation, but it is bad when we are using texting lingo on an important paper. We are not practicing what we need in the real world. In conclusion, teens are spending too much time on their phones. Phone ad-diction is affecting their brains and their speech. An average person checks their phone 150 times a day and only 17% of teens use it for two hours or less. If we put our phones down and focused on the real world, we could increase that per-centage. We might just be able to change our brains and our speech too.

The Zinger Page 7Human Interest

When a tiny fish or marine animal eats plastic, it moves up the food chain. For example, lantern fish eat the plastic, the squid eats the lantern fish, tuna eats the squid, then we eat the tuna. Then plastic chemicals become part of the food we eat! 100,000 marine animals die each year from pollution in our waters. Fish and other ocean life are essential to our food chain, and we must learn to protect them. Marine pollution is a big problem in our world, and if we don’t try to fix it soon, it could turn into an even bigger problem. If it turns into a bigger problem, the damage could become irreversible.

Marine pollution’s main source comes from land. When large tracts of land are plowed, the exposed soil can erode during rainstorms. Much of this runoff flows to the sea, carrying with it agricultural fertilizers and pesticides. Eighty percent of pollution to the marine environment comes from land. But pollution can also start with smaller sources, like septic tanks, cars, trucks, and boats. Plus larger sources, such as farms, livestock, ranches, and timber harvest areas. This chart below shows you the most common materials that are polluting the ocean. As you

can see, sewage is the most common, and offshore oil & litter are the least common.

You know all the adorable marine animals you might see at Seaworld, in the zoo, or even in the ocean, when we throw trash into their enviorment, it gets polluted. You’re hurting all those animals in more than one way. Plastic debris gets in the ocean. Marine life gets stuck in/or eats the debris. For ex-ample, turtles may get stuck in the plastic that is used to hold soda cans together.

Our world did this to these animals. We, not anyone else, this is what we’re turning our oceans into. A big ocean of pollution

and harmed animals that are victims of this. With the ocean covering more than 70% of our planet, oceans are among the earth’s most valuable natural resources. Oceans are the lifeblood of planet Earth and humankind. They produce more than half of the oxygen in the atmosphere, and absorb the most carbon from it.

The ocean also gives us food to eat. Crab, crawfish, fish, and more are some things it pro-vides.. If we keep polluting the ocean, what would happen to the seafood people love? Pollution can affect the food we eat. The heavy metals and other contaminants can accumulate in seafood and make it harmful to eat.

The ocean’s carbonate levels go down when the acidity levels rise, threatening the survival of these animals. Bivalves are at the bottom of the food chain, so these effects ripple up to many fish, seabirds, and marine animals. More acidic waters also contribute to the bleaching of coral reefs and make it harder for some types of fish to sense predators and for others to hunt prey.

The ocean provides us with oxygen and we thank it by throwing our trash into the water. We’re polluting the marine animals home and their habitat. We should be taking much better care of our ocean. What would happen if we didn’t have an ocean? You’ve probably never thought of that. Without an ocean we wouldn’t have as much oxygen, and cutting down trees makes it worse. Trees and the ocean give us oxygen, and we choose to pollute the ocean why? “Water and air, the two essential sources on which all life depends, have become global garbage cans.” We must stop this madness, because we depend on the ocean, and we’re harming it and all the wildlife living in it.

If you have ever heard of the play Hamilton, you would know it is a musical theatre play, that is very different than the rest. The play’s music is mostly rap or hip hop with a few songs that are slow and like most other typical songs. This play is about the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s founding fathers. It explains the life of this historic figure that is not recognized by most. The play is written by Lin Manuel Miranda, a play writer that has made many other plays. He wanted to create a play based on Alexander Hamilton’s life but with lots of different ethnicities and cultures combined. Lin Manuel Miranda knew from the start, though, that he was going to show the play on Broadway in New York City, where Alexander Ham-ilton actually lived and it was a huge part of his life. Hamilton’s first broadway show took place at Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City in 2015. The play is now shown all over the United States and even in Puerto Rico and England. Lin Manuel Miranda read a book on Alex-ander Hamilton while on vacation with his wife. He loved the book and he wanted other people to know about this amazing historic person. Lin decided to create the play but he wanted it to be different. He knew that people wouldn’t be drawn to just a play on one of America’s least known

founding fathers, so Lin Manuel Miranda became the idea to create a play using hip hop music and multiple ethnicities. Lin Manuel Miranda definitely got famous after creating this amazing play and starring as the main character, Alexander Hamilton. Before Hamilton, Lin created a broadway show called In The Heights. In The Heights premiered in 2008. Lin has stopped the play to solely focus on Hamilton, although he isn’t playing in Hamilton anymore.

Hamilton: An American Musical is a play based on the life of Alexander Hamilton. The play is different from the rest because of the hip hop elements in the music and the play is 100% music, so there are no talking or acting parts. The play includes very diverse characters that are different from the real life examples the play is based on. The play was a huge success instantly. The play gained popularity after some hit Hamilton songs were on TV. Lots of people bought and listened to the music because tickets are expen-sive and hard to find. Hamilton is now one of the most famous plays, so obviously, many people like it. One of those people is me because I love Hamilton. I think Hamilton is a very educational play that has great actors and amazing music. It is great because of how it uses hip hop, rap, pop, and more. It really gets people’s attention be-cause of its different music. Hamilton is different and the same than Lin Manuel Miranda’s previous work. In The Heights also includes music and actors from other ethnicities and cultures, like Hamilton. Both plays are also set in New York city. However, Hamilton tells a true, historic story whereas In The Heights is a story made up by Lin Manuel Miranda.

Hamilton is different and similar than other broadway plays. Hamilton is a historical story turned into music where-as most other plays are fictional stories made into plays or based off movies. Hamilton is also rap and hip hop music which is very different than many other plays because they use more singing and slower songs. Hamilton is also pure mu-sic. There is not a scene where they are just talking and acting. Most other plays have scenes where they are just acting. People love Hamilton for its music, story, location, actors, and more. People love how it is different and tells a true, great, American story. A drawback might be its expensive, hard to get tickets or the location of the play. Overall, Ham-ilton tells an educational, historic story through hip hop music. Personally, I love the play Hamil-ton. I would rate it a 10/10 for the actual play. The play is very hard to get tickets for and is very expensive though, so that might might bring its overall rating down to a 9.5/10.

Cast: Miranda Cosgrove (Carly), Jennette McCur-dyn (Sam), Nathan Kress (Freddy), Jerry Trainor (Spencer), and Noah Munck (Gibby)

Director: Steve Hoefer

Synopsis: When Carly and her best friend Sam act funny at a school talent show audition, their friend Freddie records it and posts it online without tell-ing them. After the video was posted, people loved it and thought it was so funny, they decided to start a webshow called iCarly. While the three friends worry about other problems going on in life, Carly, Sam, and Freddie discover that they have also become online sensations on their show. The show features talent contests, funny videos, and random dancing. Carly lives in Seattle with her 26-year-old brother and guardian Spencer, and airs the show in a makeshift third-floor studio loft in their apart-ment.

Review: When iCarly started, I was only two ,but the show lasted so I could see it when I was older. I was so obsessed with iCarly. I feel like it was a good show back then because it was something all younger kids could relate to.

While iCarly can be funny, it can also be sad and heartwarming. There are so many struggles and sad moments in the seven seasons it was on air. There were also so many funny moments in the show. Every episode had something new and fun, so you would always want to watch the next week.

Even my mom used to watch it and think it was funny. It had a large audience of all ages. It had good comedy that was not inappropriate, so younger viewers could watch it. I even watch it to this day.

I would rate icarly a 10/10. It is still a great show. It is so good that I have watched every epi-sode multiple times. If you like funny shows that you can relate to, then you would definitely like iCarly.

5. “Friday” - Rebecca Black - I don’t really have any words for this. Stupid. She is talking about how it is so great for it to be Friday.

6. “That’s Not My Name” - The Ting Tings - This song has 54 million views. The song is about how many people call her different names. They use a little bit of profanity, but not to the point where it is horrible.

Have you ever been out of the country? Have you ever been on a mission trip? Well, I have done both. For my spring break, I went on a mission trip to Mexico to build houses for families in need. It was a very life-changing experience, and I hope to do it again soon. To get to Mexico, we drove there. It was a very long drive, but it was one of my favorite parts. The process of building a house is very interesting, and you have to work very hard. Once the houses were finished and the families got to see them it was a very life changing moment, and I am so glad I was there to experi-ence it. Driving to Mexico was a very long pro-cess; it took us 2 ½ days to get to Mexico, and we stayed in two hotels. The ride there was very fun, I rode on my church’s bus with some of my really good friends. On the bus we played so many fun games, and we sang songs together. My favor-ite memory from the drive down to Mexico was when we stopped for lunch one day and a group of us went to subway, and we shared so many funny stories and had a really fun time. I was so excited when we got to Mexico after 2 ½ days of traveling.

As soon as we got to where we were stay-ing, we unloaded all of the trailers full of sup-

plies for sleeping, eating, and for building. After unloading, everyone went and looked at where the three houses were going to be built, and got a chance to meet the families. When we got back to our campsite, we split up into the three groups to build. I was very excited to start building the next day! I got to try so many new things. Everyone got to try what they wanted when we were build-ing. I was able to do so many things like nailing the shingles on the roof, painting the house, dig-ging the hole for the outdoor plumbing, putting up the sheet rock, and helping with putting the walls up. It was very fun building the house, and I am glad I got the chance to help.

After the houses were finished, everyone got to look around at the houses. On every house that is built, our church puts a sun so the next time we are in Mexico we know what houses we built. When the families were able to see the houses, they were all so excited and were very thankful. This put many things in perspective for me; the house that was built for the families was a very small house compared to the houses in the U.S., but they were still so thankful. This taught me to be thankful for everything in life.

In conclusion, I learned many things from my mission trip to Mexico: always be thankful for what you have and serve others. This trip was very life changing, and I am so happy that I got the chance to go on the trip. Building the house was a very new experience for me, and it was a good experience. Everyone on the trip was very giving and I am glad I got to meet them and make relationships with them. This trip overall was a life changing experience, and I am very thankful for the opportunity.

Animal testing occurs in labs around the world. Animals are locked in cages, starved, and harmed for punishment because of not doing whatever the researcher wants. Animal testing may mean testing drugs, cosmetics, household cleaners, food additives, or industrial cleaners on various types of animals. Animals that are subjected to testing labs experience forced chemical exposure, exposure to medicines, chemicals, or contagious diseases that cause illness, distress, or death. They also experience prolonged periods of physical restraint for study, wounds and burns to study healing, or behavioral experiments designed to cause distress or agitation. (For example, electric shock or forced swimming.) Many different species are used around the world, but the most common include rodents like mice, rats, or guinea pigs, fish, monkeys, cats and dogs. Some forms of animal testing include star-vation to study the effects of anorexia, food and water deprivation, and surgical procedures. After living lives of cruelty and punish-ment, the animals are killed, not released. Often, researchers are not asked to explain why they are using animals instead of alternatives. Take Libby for example. Libby was one of

the 250 cats and dogs rescued from the hor-rendous testing lab Professional Laboratory and Research Services Inc. following being shut down by a People for the Ethical Treat-ment of Animals (PETA) investigation. Phar-maceutical companies paid the lab to inject animals with worms, fleas, and ticks and then smear toxic chemicals onto their skin or force-feed them to the animals. PETA’s investigation recorded workers as they kicked, dragged, and threw dogs, dragged puppies by their necks, and screamed profanities at the animals. A former supervisor and three former employ-ees at the lab were charged with felony cruelty charges. When Libby first met her new fam-ily, she was too terrified to stand up. She had hookworms, tapeworms, and a vaginal infec-tion. After a long recovery period, Libby was finally able to accept love from her new fam-ily. Now, you would never be able to tell she was rescued from the awful situation she was forced into. She enjoys tug-of-war and wres-tling with her canine brothers, snuggling, and going on walks. On top of all that, animal testing is also no longer necessary. Scientists have discov-ered other ways to test new drugs and cosmet-ics. They can use sophisticated tests including human tissue and cells. (This is known as vitro methods.) They can use silico models, which are advanced computer models. They can also

study with human volunteers. People volunteer to be test subjects for new cosmetics or drugs. They could also give the option to death-row prisoners, as they will end up perishing either way. Harvard’s Wyss institute has also invented “organs-on-chips.” These chips are human cells grown in a state of the art system designed to imitate the structure and function of human organs and organ systems. These could replace animal testing in disease re-search, toxicity testing, and drug testing. While animal testing seems monstrous, some good has come from it. The cure for small-pox came from animal testing. The disease is now eradicated. Insulin was originally tested on dogs and fish, and it can now control diabetes. Polio has been rendered extinct and is now being cured around the world because of animal testing. There are now vaccines for tetanus from testing on horses, rubella from testing on monkeys, and rabies from testing on dogs and rabbits. I do not feel animal testing is necessary. Because of modern science, we no longer have the need to keep animals in bad conditions and in the care of cruel researchers and employees. While good has come from animal testing in the past, we are in the future. Animal testing is no longer needed to test for safety for humans. If you would like to join the movement against animal testing, you can visit crueltyfreekit-ty.com and peta.org. Cruelty Free Kitty (www.crueltyfreekitty.com) is a website dedicated to in-forming consumers about which cosmetic brands use animal testing. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is an activist group dedi-cated to animal rights and fighting animal cruelty.

If you were given a choice between get-ting a job that makes you happy and doing what you love or making millions, which would you choose? Bob Marley once said “Money is numbers and numbers never end. If it takes money to be happy, your search for happiness will never end.” When looking for a job, many people look for money, but it should be about your passions and about being happy.

People normally want to make a large sal-ary so that they can afford fancy and new things that they think will make them feel good about themselves. In order to have fancy things you need to have a good high paying job which is one reason why people want to have money. Really, once you pay off debts and bills, all you have left is extra money to spend on useless things that you don’t need.

Having a job should be about being happy and doing what you love. You will never have enough money because money leads to problems and despair if you don’t spend it wisely. If you get a job you that you love that might not have a higher salary, you could live a much happier life, and you will be doing something you love.

You should wake up and be excited to go to work each day, not dread every morning and hate your job or what you do every day. You should love what you do and do what you love. People

who do what they love act with a lot more confidence, passion, and are able to do more. People who don’t do what they love aren’t very happy with their job or life and don’t act with much passion or enthusiasm. More people need to go for their passions and not let money get in the way at all.

People need to go for their goals and to do what they love because by doing that, they are a lot happier, a lot more confident, and a lot more successful in what they do. They also need to not let money affect that or anything about where they would want to work because money just leads to many difficult problems. In conclusion, do what you love and not just for the money because money will never give you substantial happiness. Only by following your dreams can you do that.
