A dark African crouched low, looking straight-

focused. Knees touching the ground, eyes not even

blinking.

The athlete straightens his u%%er body, set to run.

A wheatish looking face a%%ears in the same

%osition ne&t to him, also focused and looking

straight.

'ommentary" This race is essentially between

Kenya(s Tony )yder and *ndia(s Ar+un Khanna.

.!" #o

Tony lunges forward with other athletes they

cross the starting line and dart ahead. The camera

moves besides them as Tony %ushes hard, stretching

every nerve on his face and body.

/uddenly he breaks from the grou% and surges ahead,

the camera follows him as the surroundings blur.

The lone runner seems to be winning.

'0T T!" A to% shot from behind.

Tony way ahead of the %ack, while others running

hard to catch u%.

Tony on the straight 566 metre stretch, from behind

him emerges a wheatish figure, running fast, really

fast. *t(s Ar+un Khanna, he crosses the turn and is

now on the straight stretch. 7oth racers visible in

the same frame, Tony leading.

7oth racers run fast, Ar+un seems to be inching

forward. 9e is covering the distance :uickly with

ra%id and big strides. 1ow, the ga% is barely a few

metres.

Ar+un inches forward %ushing with all he has-

grinding his teeth, %utting in everything, comes

level with Tony.

Ar+un and Tony, still level. The finish line

clearly visible, +ust a few strides away. 7oth men

Tony takes long strides, but Ar+un(s blue +ersey is

ahead. Tony %uts in the final %ush. The finish line

seen, now disturbed by Ar+un as he goes %ast it. 9e

raises his arms in delight. *t(s a %hoto-finish,

Ar+un +ust winning by about a centimeter.

Ar+un continues running.

'ommentary" 2E&cited4 9e as won it, he has The

gold goes to Ar+un Khanna from *ndia.

Ar+un continues running and slowly his surroundings

start to change. 9is blue +ersey changes to white,

black shorts turn grey. 9e looks +ust as

determined, looking straight while %ushing harder.

The track slowly gives way to light grayish

concrete road and a railing on his right.

9is white +ersey dri%%ing with sweat as a

determined music goes on. The stadium hasdisa%%eared, he is now running on a wide em%ty

concrete road with an *-%od %lugged to his ears.

*t(s early morning.

'0T T!" A back shot.

Ar+un a%%roaching a bend. The camera follows him

and slowly it moves ahead of him. 9e is now running

at full s%eed. The camera is now ahead of him, a

front shot. 9e is about to take the turn when a carslams right into him. 9is body flies into the air

and lands on the concrete with a thud. The car

swerves violently as Ar+un(s shivering body lies on

the ground.

Ar+un(s legs hardly visible, +ust the red of blood

can be seen. 3ying in the middle of the road. As

%ain ri%s through his body, his body shakes

violently for a few moments. 9e turns his head to

look at the car.

A black coloured /antro racing away with a 6 year old man looks at Ar+un(s leg or whatever

that is left of it. 9e sees nothing but cloth

wra%%ed in blood. 9e can(t bear the look of it, he

is shocked. Then, he shrugs himself and looks at

Ar+un. Ar+un gives him a big smile. Ar+un is lifted

on the stretcher and %ut in the ambulance.

'0T T!" *nside the ambulance

Ar+un lying on the stretcher, now conscious.

?earing a s%ondylytis belt on his neck and a few

medical veins inserted into his body. 9is face

looks blank, as he is looking out of the window.

The medical worker is breathing heavily, looks

uncomfortable. 9is body +erks forward as if wanting

to vomit. 9e tries once but then starts resisting.

9e covers his mouth with his hand, looking uneasy.

9e then turns to look at Ar+un(s leg.

'0T T!" Ar+un(s bloodied leg, nothing more than

%ul%.

'0T T!"

The medical worker %ushes his colleague in the ne&t

seat inward. 9e slams the door o%en. 9is body +erksforward as he starts vomiting. The car comes to a

halt as he +erks forward once more.

The other medical worker holding his colleague and

%atting his back.

The man sits down on his seat in the ambulance, his

breathing eases slowly. 9e takes a si% from a

bottle of water. 9e then looks away trying to avoid

the sight of Ar+un(s legs. 9e feels someone(s hand

on his shoulder, sur%rised, he looks to check.

*t(s Ar+un(s hand, he slowly turns his face towards

the man, his body +erks a bit. 9e gestures towards

the man as if asking him, is he ok8

Then he slowly turns his head towards his lower

body and makes an ! with his first finger and thumb

The man is %leasantly sur%rised, he looks at Ar+un

with all the medical veins and in+uries. 9e finally

manages a smile, nods furiously and gives Ar+un a

Ar+un lying on the bed with more medical veins

inserted in his hands and also one through his

nose. ?e can hear a bee% at regular intervals.Ar+un(s face looks calm. A hand rests on his

forehead.

*n the background of Ar+un(s side %rofile, we see a

lady in her late =6(s sitting on a chair. ark long

hair, milky white skin and a dim%led face. 3ooking

at Ar+un with a smile and caressing his forehead.

Ar+un slowly o%ens his eyes and he turns towardsthe lady, his wife.

9e takes her hand and kisses it lightly, the camera

%ans. /he smiles at him.

A ward boy is seen %ushing Ar+un(s wheelchair

through the hos%ital corridor.

A name%late reads, The Khanna(s (. Ar+un %ushes

the wheelchair close to the door. 9e looks u% with

a smile, then %lants his hands on the chair and

tries to get u%.

9e tries to move his legs, but he can(t.

9is entire lower body is shivering his face is

full of %ain. 9is li%s are clenched tightly, looks

u% and then leaves his body to fall back on thechair. 9e is tired, sweating %rofusely. 9e looks at

the door in disa%%ointment. 9e turns to look at the

ward boy.

/to%s himself from calling the ward boy, withdraws

his hand. 9e looks at the doorbell again and then

looks at his hands and starts to ta% on the door as

if he is %laying tabla. 9e ta%s louder and louder,

shakes his head in a rhythmic motion. /!1*A o%ens

the door, looking stunning in a white /alwaar

Ar+un makes a sad face, she smiles, comes forward

and bites the cucumber. Ar+un tries to kiss her,

but she %ushes him behind.

uncomfortably. 9e is snuggled u% in bed, but his

Ar+un turns to the other side of the bed and

hurriedly draws a %illow over his head.

Ar+un turns in his bed again to look at /!1*A,

irritated.

Ar+un tries to get u%, %lants his arms on the bed

and %ushes his body against the wall. Ar+un now

leaning against the backrest acce%ts a glass of

milk from /!1*A. 9e looks rela&ed as he takes a si%

of milk.

Ar+un(s li%s break into a smile as he nods.

Ar+un tries to get u%, he looks at his legs, they

+ust don(t move. 9e looks in %ain. /!1*A rushes

forward to hel% him.

Ar+un tries to move his legs, but he still can(t.

ever so carefully but he is e&%eriencing %ain.

the bed with his legs touching the ground.

Ar+un(s bed, he is lying straight on the bed. Then

he folds his hands behind his head and then brings

his entire u%%er body %er%endicular to his lower

body. ?e hear him count as he goes throughre%etitions$.(( >H$>I$>J$F6((

9e falls back on his bed after his last re%etition.

9e tightly shuts his eyes and his u%%er body rises

as he e&%eriences %ain and discomfort. After a

second, he seems to be fine. 9e looks towards his

lifeless legs.

A shot of his e&tremely thin looking legs with a

huge red scar running right from his knee u% to the

ankle.

9e slowly moves his hands towards his legs,

e&tremely cautious. 'oncentrating fully and moving

it delicately. 9e then holds his thighs with his

hands and tries to lift his legs to form an

inverted (. 7ut he e&%eriences %ain his legs

from below the knees don(t su%%ort any weight. As

soon as he withdraws his hands, his legs colla%se

back on the bed. 9e yells in %ains and clenches his

fist.

9is face looks convoluted, eyes and mouth wide

o%en. Then he grinds his teeth.

'0T T!" 9is fists grab the bed sheet with great

force.

'0T T!" Ar+un %ushing himself backwards to sit

straight against the backrest. 1ow leaning against

the wall, he is still breathing heavily and looks

disa%%ointed. ?e see /!1*A in the frame, she was

watching everything.

/!1*A" ?ell tried Ar+un.

'0T T!" Ar+un nods, not truly believing it but +ust

for the sake of it.

Ar+un" 2resigned tone4 ;e mu+hse nahi hoga. Kaise

/!1*A smiles and walks towards him.

'0T T!" The camera moving, a side shot from behind

the wall.

The camera moves right from behind a wall and we

see Ar+un doing crunches, counting.

comes u%, /!1*A kisses him on his cheek, Ar+un

and then backwards. /he then does the same with his

ne&t finger. 1ow, she looks at Ar+un.

Ar+un nods, holds his li%s tightly together. 9e

tries, the effort visible on his face. 9is eyesshut as he makes more effort. 9is head rises

slightly because of the effort.

'0T T!" 9is body starts coming forward.

'0T T!" 9is toe, still unmoved.

9is head dro%s back into the bed and he heaves asigh of relief. 9e shuts his eyes to hide his

disa%%ointment.

As he o%ens his eyes, he realises that /!1*A is

still holding his legs and he shifts sideways as

she %uts his legs down.

/!1*A sitting on the ground, lifts Ar+un(s right

leg. Ar+un looks at her, but she is busy massaging

the leg. Ar+un wants to say something, looks

restless.

9e looks sur%rised, nods and then smiles.

white innerwear is still visible. 9e looks very

tired and e&hausted.

Ar+un finally manages to %ull the +eans back on and

s%reads out on the bed. 7reathing heavily, tired of

his effort. 9e turns left to look at the table.

9e sees a %ee %ot and a table clock ne&t to it

9e makes a bad e&%ression on looking at the %ee %ot

and then looks at the surface, blinks once and then

stares at the ceiling curiously.

'0T T!" A huge %rintout stuck on the ceiling. ?hite

background and red fonts read ( HF days to go((.

'0T T!" Ar+un nods.

3ying on his bed as the camera starts moving

towards the right. Ar+un %uts his hands at the back

of his head and starts doing his crunches

Ar+un lifts his leg by himself..((=J...@6...@5$

@=((. The camera continues moving right, %asses a

wall.

'0T T!" = legs +ust a few feet above the floor.

/lowly they lower themselves. Cirst the left foot

touches the ground, the toes ins%ect the ground.

Then the foot moves around searching for the

%erfect footing. /lowly, even the right leg is

lowered.

'0T T!" A long shot

Ar+un standing with wide, > legged crutches and

/!1*A standing a ste% away from him. /he is holding

the crutches with one hand and giving Ar+un

su%%ort. Ar+un holds on tightly onto /!1*A(s hand,

she slowly directs him to %ut another hand on the

crutches. /lowly Ar+un manages to stand straight

without /!1*A(s hel%.

/!1*A" /habaash, chalo ab dheerein dheerein chalne

ki koshish karo.

Ar+un nods and gingerly %lants his crutch forward

and then takes baby ste%s. /!1*A walks a ste% ahead

kee%ing one hand on the crutch. A close u% of Ar+un

where he is looking intently at /!1*A.

'0T T!" /!1*A standing with a slight hunch, eyes

wide-o%en with e&%ectations. /he gestures to Ar+un

with her hands to walk forward.

#radually her features begin to change, her hair

turns bright white, her skin becomes wrinkled, her

hunch becomes more %rominent and she suddenly

s%orts a walking stick in her hand. /he looks ugly,

smiles to show off her toothless mouth. Then a hand

emerges, /!1*A holds that hand and %ulls it

forward. The hand is of a man on a wheelchair,

/!1*A %ulls the man with her hands. The man turns

to look at Ar+un, the face is old and ulgy, but

familiar. /!1*A kee%s walking on with a stick,

%ulling the younger man on the wheelchair, the man

is Ar+un himself. 7oth of them kee% moving ahead,

then /!1*A turns.

/!1*A" Ar+un, Ar+un 2softly4 $. 23oudly4 Ar+un.

'0T T!" Ar+un(s startled face, /!1*A(s voice +erks

him back to the reality.

'0T T!" Ar+un nods disbelievingly, ( Kuch nahi,kuch nahi(( and tries to walk.

Ar+un sitting on a bed with /!1*A on the floor,

carefully massaging his feet. /tarting from his

feet, she carefully moves u%wards till his knees.

The camera Dooms out as /!1*A continues massaging,

a door slams shut.

'0T T!"

A metal alarm clock rings loudly on the side table,

a hand slams it shut. A second of silence, it

starts ringing and vibrating again. The hand gro%es

and %uts it off again. *t starts ringing again as

the camera Dooms out. Ar+un gets u% lookingirritated and slams the alarm clock shut.

9e sees a black track %ants and a grey T-shirt. 9e

%icks u% a note ad+oining it, it reads ( #et ready

for the !lym%ics((. Ar+un looks sur%rised, he moves

his legs and %uts them on the ground and that is

when he sees = %encil crutches and a %air of shoes.

'0T T!"

Ar+un lying on the bed, he wears the T-shirt overhis track %ants. 9e is already wearing his shoes.

1ow, he slowly holds both the crutches in his

hands, %uts his weight to try and get u%.

9e %ushes his body u%wards but feels uncomfortable.

9e %ulls the crutches closer and once more tries

slowly. 9e manages to get u%.

'0T T!" A front shot.

9e stands slowly, trying to erect his body. 9e

first tilts to the right, then to the left and

loses balance and falls back into his bed. 9e %uts

his weight on them again and is not balanced.

/!1*A a%%lies butter on a thin slice of bread when

she hears Ar+un calling out to her. /he :uickly

takes a bite of the bread and %uts head%hones of

her *-%od. /he chuckles when he calls out more

im%atiently, %retending to read a news%a%er.

'0T T!" Ar+un.

At getting no res%onse, Ar+un slowly balances

himself and starts taking one ste% at a time. Cirst

the left crutch, then the right crutch and the left

leg.


/!1*A bites into a %iece of bread as Ar+un emerges

through the door, very slowly. 9e looks at /!1*A,

she glances at him.

gate.

%ast him. 9e sees +ust fit bodies running, it is

a oggers %ark.

As the gate o%ens com%letely, a huge circulartrack made of red brick a%%ears. *t is full of

young %eo%le testing their s%eed. !ne after

another runner Di%s by. /!1*A turns to look at

Ar+un.

Ar+un turns towards her and then glances at thetrack.

almost bangs into him. 9e avoids him and

hesitantly walks to the inner edge of the track.

9e starts walking.

'oming from the o%%osite direction. They both

kee% staring at Ar+un(s leg and talk discreetly

as they %ass him.

'0T T!" Ar+un.

Ar+un continues walking slowly he kee%s looking

down to avoid %eo%le(s sym%athetic looks. Beo%lecoming from o%%osite direction kee% staring at

from left to right on his ankle. 9e does so for afew seconds as a kid standing nearby watches in

amaDement. Ar+un then tosses the ball u% and

catches it again with his ankle, he seems to be

en+oying this. Then, he +erks his leg forward as if

kicking the ball and the ball lands on his thigh,

he continues balancing it. 9is face brightens as he

balances it. Cinally, he lets it roll down his

ankle.

The boy standing close by, dressed in Cootball

+ersey is still amamDed. 9e runs forward to take

the ball away, he goes left, then right trying to

kick but the boy is blocking the shot. 9e tries

contrast against the blurring grey surroundings.

leans towards the the left as he negotiates the

it. !n the straight stretch again, the wheelchair

Ar+un(s wheelchair right in the middle of the

track.

Ar+un with his black helmet and shorts ready to

take off at the sound of the whistle. 9e is

focused, glances at

wheelchair racers enter the frame, their wheels

%ositioned on the white line. Ar+un gives them a

smirk. 9e understands what(s ha%%ening. The racer

right ne&t to him returns his smirk, crouches low,

looks ahead, almost ignoring Ar+un(s %resence. @

)ahul, the tiny man with big shoulders. Ar+un

%ushes hard and )ahul disa%%ears from the frame.

Ar+un is first and alone, %ushing harder. 9is

wheelchair bends towards the left, he holds it

tight, slows down as he negotiates a left turn. 9is

face, stiff, facing the onslaught of the harsh

winds.

'0T T!" Cront shot

Ar+un leading with +ust )ahul close, while all

racers are far behind. Ar+un looks :uite

comfortable in the lead.

'0T T!" 7ack shot as Ar+un a%%roaches an incline,

his hands move faster through the wheel.

'0T T!" /ide shot

Ar+un %ushes harder to reach the incline while

)ahul slows down and drifts outside the frame.

'0T T!" Ar+un going u% a stee% incline, strugglingto kee% %ace but still %ushing hard. 9e is %anting

for breath, his movement slowing down. Ar+un

re%eatedly glances behind as he struggles u% the

incline.

incline.

ahead, leans and starts %ushing harder but he cant

gather much s%eed. 7y now he is over the incline

and on a flat stretch.

'0T T!" )ahul %ushing comfortably, still on the

incline.

breath, slowing down. /lowly a tyre a%%roaches on

the right, Ar+un turns, it(s )ahul

'0T T!" )ahul %utting in ra%id %ushes through the

wheel. 9e leans forward to get that e&tra %ush.

'0T T!" Ar+un leans forward too, he starts to %ush

hard, %utting in more effort everytime, starting to

gain s%eed but wait, )ahul(s wheelchair +ust %assed

him. )ahul is now in the lead. /lowly )ahul(s lead

starts to increase and in s%ite of A+run %ushing

harder and harder, he starts to fall back. Ar+un

watches hel%lessly as other racers go %ast him.Ar+un tries to %ush, he tries to %ut more effort

but he is e&hausted. 9e gives u% and now his aim is

+ust to finish the race.

'0T T!" )ahul raises his arms as he crosses the

finish line. Ar+un is in the background, looks

disa%%ointed, while continuing to %ush forward.

Ar+un standing among a grou% of men, some of whom

are on a wheelchair.
