Zillmere NEWs
Dear families and friends This fortnight we celebrated the return of all Zillmere students from Prep to Year 6. We are proud of the way our students, families and staff have responded to the many changes, challenges, and adjustments throughout the term. These adjustments include our before and after school procedures below.
Drop Off and Pick Up at School – Physical Distancing Continues To help minimise interaction of adults within the school, parents and carers are asked not to enter the school grounds to drop your children off or to congregate at the school gates or carparks. To support the quick and organised school drop off and pick-up the following is in place: From 8:30am
*A teacher will usually be at the Murphy Road gate and the gate near the pool.
*When parents bring their children to the school, the child will enter through the gate and the parent will leave the
area.
2:50pm Merrett Avenue fence
*All students will wait on the oval.
*All parents/carers to wait in Merrett Avenue in the afternoon.
*When we see you waiting outside the Merrett Avenue fence, we will release your child/children through the gate to
you.
*The Murphy Road gates will be closed and no child will exit through these gates.
*You may wish to stagger your arrival because there will be many families arriving at the one time.
Staff and students who are unwell must not attend school.
Student Leaders’ Induction Traditionally, the induction of our Zillmere Student Leaders would have occurred in Term 1. As we know, many of our usual practices have been different this year. The current COVID-19 safety measures, such as physical distancing of adults on the school grounds, remain in place. This means that we will hold our Student Leaders’ Induction on Monday afternoon and this will be digitally recorded for families, since they are unable to physically attend. We apologise for the necessary change in our routine this year. Please contact me on 3863 8333 or [email protected] if you wish to discuss.
2020 Premier’s Reading Challenge The 2020 Premier’s Reading Challenge [PRCh] has commenced. The challenge aims to boost literacy skills by encouraging students to read widely for pleasure and learning, and to develop their imagination. For a student to successfully complete the Premier's Reading Challenge they are required to read or experience the number of books indicated below:
The vision is for Zillmere State School students to become respectful, inclusive, life-long learners with a growth mindset.

A reading record sheet will be sent home with each student and they have until 28th August to complete the challenge. Since 2015 Zillmere students have appeared in the Hall of Fame, having achieved almost 100 per cent participation, and they are determined to continue this outstanding whole-school effort.

Attendance and Participation - Free Friday Kubbi Café Treat We appreciate your support to help ensure that your children achieve 100% attendance, which includes arriving at school by 8:50am. When students are organised in the morning they are more likely to arrive at school in time for their first lesson of the school day. Refer to the table to see just how a few minutes each day adds up to a lot of lost opportunities to learn!
We have resumed our Free Friday Kubbi Café Treat this term. Those students who are at school on time every day and participating in all learning activities [making positive behaviour choices] for the week will be issued with a voucher on Friday. Students exchange their voucher for a treat from the Kubbi Café at the second break.

Home Reading Tips
We can all help develop a love of reading.
Here are some Premier’s Reading Challenge tips:
make time to read aloud to your child every day, even for a few minutes
show the importance of reading in your daily life and let your child see you read - not only books but recipes, newspapers and text messages for example
browse a bookstore together
ensure reading time is fun and exciting
visit the local library - let your child choose books to borrow
let younger children hold the book and turn the pages

ZILLMERE NEWS Prep
Well what a busy time is has been in Prep/Year 1. We have been working so hard and exploring many different interesting topics in class.
We commemorated National Sorry day by painting and decorating purple flowers to display in the school. This is the national day of healing and is to remember the mistreatment of indigenous peoples.
In Math, we have been exploring how to follow and give directions. To help us with our learning we have been using BeeBots. We used paddle pop sticks to set up a track and set the directions for the BeeBot to get through the track. It has been so much fun!
In Science, we have been looking at different materials and how we can change them. We tested what each material does when it comes in contact with water and will use this knowledge to make our own boats.
This week we are also starting the Premiers Reading Challenge. In years P-2, we have the challenge of reading/listening to at least 20 books. Your child has taken home a record sheet where they can write the title of the book and the author. Let’s get every child reading and fulfilling the challenge!
Stay safe and healthy,
Miss Jacqui Emmerton
Prep/Year 1
Prep students have now settled back into the school routine nicely. Thank you for having your child at school
on time and ready to learn. We are now back to our daily literacy and numeracy groups. Hopefully as our world
returns to normal you will be able to come in and assist with our groups.
Next week your child will bring home their Term 2 Initialit homework book. In English, we are continuing with
our retell of The Three Little Pigs. We have made puppets, straw houses and masks to help us retell the story in
the correct order. Please talk to your child about the characters and why they like/don’t like the story.
As part of Zillmere State School’s new behaviour plan we have started talking about Zones
of Regulation so your child may talk about being in their red (angry, upset), green (happy,
calm, ready to learn), yellow (silly, frustrated) or blue (sad, tired, bored) zone. You can
help by encouraging your child to talk about their emotions and how they are feeling when
they display different types of behaviours. Help them to understand that it is normal and
acceptable to feel all of those emotions but for ultimate learning we
want to be in our green zone. If you have
any questions please feel free to email me

Year 2
Many Ways of Learning!
There are many ways for children to learn and practise curriculum content. The following photos show children
learning about characters in narratives. It involves learning about language, images and action!
The Year 2 students have settled back to school. They are being eager learners. Many have obtained their first
prize in the Aim High booklets.
Every day at school counts and reading is vital, whether at home or school. Our class is keen to win the
Premier’s challenge, so we are recording every book we read!
Thank you to parents who are keeping their unwell children at home. Hopefully this will reduce the amount of
illness overall and keep everyone safe.
Best Wishes,
Mrs Forde
Year 3/4
Hello Parents/Carers,
Students have settled back to school routines very well. They have demonstrated that they are ready to learn. Most students have also attained their first prize in their Aim High Stamp Books – with most students opting for the Ice Block prize. Others will be seeing a Post Card arrive in the mail in the near future.
Please remember that every day at school counts, and while it is best to stay home when sick, we have a lot to get through and a number of assessments to complete before the end of the Term.
We will commence Library borrowing again next Tuesday morning. Students will need a library bag to be able to take books home.

Year 4/5
In HASS this term we are gaining understanding of how Australia is a rich and diverse nation influenced by many
different cultures. We are integrating some of the activities with our English unit on advertising and persuasive
language and techniques. On Monday, a task sheet was sent home to help your child gather information about a
range of topics related to their cultural heritage. Please work with your child to compile some details for each of
the stated areas. This will help them have a more productive learning experience at school.
We have spent a great deal of time in class drawing escalation maps and identifying the times in the day and week
when the level of stress and tension might be low or high. We then have looked at the Zones of Regulation to see
the possible strategies for each individual to use to bring them back into the green focused, ready to learn phase.
We have also been exploring what it means to be present, centred and grounded. I encourage you to talk to your
child about these topics and the ways they can utilise them.
Every day we have a fruit break in the morning session to tide your child’s energy levels over until morning tea.
Please send along either fresh fruit and vegetables, whole or cut/segmented or dried fruit which can be eaten in
the space of five minutes. Processed fruit, like jelly cups and squeezy tubes, aren’t suitable for this munch and
crunch time.
Please let me know if you have any questions or queries. Phone the school on 3863 8333 or email [email protected]

Year 5 & 6 Class Teacher
Year 5/6
The last two weeks have seen the 4/5 class busy learning about media texts and starting to read facts about Fruit Bats ready for their persuasive writing assessment. In Maths we have been learning about angles, classifying them and drawing them, and also using compass points for direction. Our Science is all about Erosion and will culminate with the Bunyaville Environmental Education Centre visit and assessment.
Reminders:
Please remember to complete and return the consent form and payment for our Science Incursion by Friday 12th June.
Premiers Reading Challenge has begun. Don't forget to record the books that you read from now until August 28th.
Thanks

Hey I'm Kubbi! So glad to meet you all. I went for
