Technology Mission City Schools of Decatur (CSD) promotes the effective and
appropriate selection, integration, and utilization of technology resources in our schools for rigorous, engaging, intentional, and developmentally appropriate learning experiences. The district’s mission is to provide students with technology tools to not only achieve curriculum objectives and state standards but also provide life skills. To enable our graduates to be successful in post-secondary endeavors in the 21st century, the technology department will provide support and opportunities for all students and all staff. Technology will play an essential role in teaching, student learning, communicating with families, and district operations.
City Schools of Decatur (CSD)
All students and teachers will have equal access to appropriate and high quality technology resources and tools as they work to master the Georgia-required curriculum. The combination of the Ziggi HD and Wireless
Station for iPad provides students and teachers in all grade levels (K – 12) with another high quality technology tool that can be integrated into every content and curriculum area – from math to science to culinary arts.
CSD’s Tech Vision to Improve Access and Impact for Instruction
Digital information sources aligned with academic goals and standards, online communication tools, and up-to-date video and audio resources will give students engaging, authentic, and developmentally appropriate learning experiences and will allow students to collaborate within the district, the city, and with broader global audiences. The combination of the Ziggi HD and Wireless
Station for iPad is an up-to-date video resource that fosters engaging, authentic, and developmentally appropriate learning experiences for students in all grades.
CSD’s Tech Vision to Improve Access and Impact for Instruction
Teachers and students will share their work with each other and the community through online resources, video and audio presentations, and by using Web 2.0 tools and other social media. The combination of the Ziggi HD and Wireless
Station for iPad allows for work to be shared easily between the devices and the interactive whiteboards that are already mounted in many (approximately 190) classrooms across the district.

Describe objects in the environment Use Ziggi HD to display pictures of various environments that are
not found on/near school grounds (an amusement park, a beach, etc.).
Stream to iPads that are in the hands of students. Students will locate then use the language of the standard to name
and describe the shapes of the objects and their relative positions in the various environments.
Common Core State Standard K.G.A.: Identify and describe shapes (squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, hexagons, cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres).
1. Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to.
NETS-S: Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage
projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources.
Classroom Application: Kindergarten Math
Streaming the performance of dissections In the lesson ‘Flex Your Biceps’, students can have an
iPad sitting at their dissection stations alongside the dissection equipment. The iPad will be streaming the dissection process in real-time, as demonstrated/modeled by another student. Georgia Performance Standard S7CS2: Students will use
standard safety practices for all classroom laboratory and field investigations
B. Demonstrate appropriate techniques in all laboratory situations.
NETS-S: Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge,
and develop innovative products and processes using technology.
Classroom Application: Seventh Grade Life Science
Analyze and Critique Work Use the Ziggi HD to display a student’s drawing or
painting. Stream it to individual student iPads. Students use the IPEVO Whiteboard app to analyze
and critique each peer’s work of art. Common Core State Standard VAHSDRPR.4: Keeps a
visual/verbal sketchbook journal, consistently throughout the course, to…
C. Analyze and critique works of art – personal, peers, and professional.
NETS-S: Communication and Collaboration Students use digital media and environments to communicate
and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.
Classroom Application: Ninth – Twelfth Grades Visual Art
Content SS2G1 (Grade 2): Use the Ziggi HD to display a topographical
map of Georgia to student iPads. Small groups each identify and represent a different region and share their work with the class.
Process All standards and grades: Display any assignment using Ziggi
HD and iPads. Students can work independently or collaboratively in the part of the room most conducive to their learning (desk, carpet, table, hallway, etc.)
Product W.3.3 (Grade 3): Display a ‘mystery object’ related to another
content area standard (a 1996 Olympics souvenir, a fossil, etc.) via the Ziggi HD and iPads. Students will write a narrative that develops their varied responses to the mystery object, using descriptive details.
Classroom Application: Differentiated Instruction
Teacher and students can provide immediate verbal feedback once documents, images, and/or objects are displayed using the combination of this equipment
The teacher (or even a tech-savvy student) can utilize third party software to create a screen recording of lessons for sharing with absent students or for all students as a review at a later date
Introverted students can demonstrate Speaking and Listening Common Core Standards from the comfort of their own seats, rather than presenting ‘at the front of the room’
Directly address College and Career Readiness (CCR) Speaking and Listening Anchor Standards 1, 2, and 5
Classroom Application: Communication
Assistive Technology (AT) The Ziggi HD and Wireless Station combination
can also be used as an AT device that digitally magnifies text and images
Project-Based Learning The combination also enables students to acquire
and engage with sources of information in a unique way
Higher Order Thinking Skills Compare, contrast, model, appraise, describe,
examine, analyze and categorize items shown via Ziggi HD
Classroom Application: Unique Situations
Case Study 1Broadneck Elementary School ‘Benefits of Document Cameras over other Classroom
Technologies’Real-time displays allows for immediate feedback and instructionIncreased student attention and on-task behaviorDisplay of work caused students to be more organized and neat
Case Study 2Dysart Unified School District ‘Technology Integration in Canyon Ridge School’
Daily incorporation of student-centered instruction Increased student motivation and engagementStudents love to be the ‘teacher’
Note: Neither case study utilized IPEVO’s Ziggi HD. This research is about document cameras in general.
Research: Using Document Cameras in the Classroom
Identify teachers and support staff that are currently utilizing a document camera (any brand/model) for instructional purposes on a regular basis.
Purchase a minimum of one combination (Ziggi HD & Wireless Station) per school. Select at least one teacher from the compiled list to ‘pilot’ the use of this combination.
The media specialist from each school will oversee the pilot using the Concerns-Based Adoption Model (CBAM).Order and set upOrient teachers to IPEVO Support SiteCollect data and annotations regarding use
Implementation Plan
Reflection While completing this project, I
realized it is imperative that technology coaches possess the research, organizational, and presentation skills necessary to recommend the integration of emerging technology after selecting and evaluating it.
This experience strengthened my ability to step back and look at the ‘big picture’. For equity purposes, I wanted to choose technology that could be used in most teaching environments. I also had to consider the district’s existing technological resources that are necessary for this combination to be fully operable. Finally, I had to communicate my research and recommendations in a clear and professional manner.
“Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From
the quiet reflection will
come even more effective action.” – Peter Drucker
