Dear Parents/Guardian
“Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.”
Zig Ziglar
Zig Ziglar’s words are more than apt and remind me of the (growing) popular notion that one’s “IQ (intelligence
quotient) will get one the job, while one’s EQ (emotional/attitudinal quotient) will get one the promotion.” As
you would have seen in the D6 message from me, our Grade 1- 7 children have the opportunity of participating
in an EQ (research) programme later this Quarter with our on-site Educational Psychologist, Mrs Megan Osler.
This is a valuable exercise.
The Quarter has started with the customary flurry, with this week seeing our Grade 7 Marimba Band on a mini
tour in the Midlands area, while some of our musicians have participated in the popular “Denim and Strings”
concert at the Wykeham Collegiate earlier this week. The full sporting programme kicks off with gusto this
weekend too. Much action awaits!
You may have seen much excavation work happening as additional drainage pipes are being laid , leading water
past the Davies’ Field (at the bottom of the School). My thanks are extended to Mr Ian Cribbins (a parent) and
his TLB crew for all their advice and work in this regard. We are also in the process of upgrading the uneven
paving around the fountain and reception area as well as around the Bell (in the Main Quad).
It is with a sadness that I/we have to bid farewell to my PA, Mrs Colleen Bosse, who retires at the end of this
year. Colleen has given 17-and-a-half loyal and passionate years’ service to Clifton Notties. In addition, Mrs
Annie Falconer, Head of our Special Needs Department, retires at the end of the year after 8 dedicated years
too. There is a wealth of knowledge and experience that each of these ladies brings.
The following article is a fascinating one. Written by Terry Heick, it explains how 21st Century thinking is “just
different”…and so it is. I encourage you to read it. The link is: https://www.teachthought.com/critical-
thinking/how-21st-century-thinking-is-different/

I wish you a good week ahead.
Kind regards.

NEWS FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Ms Cathryn Calitz writes:
Some of Clifton’s violin players took part in the “Strings and Denims” concert on Tuesday. This concert was held at TWC and ±40 Prep school violinists performed as a massed violin orchestra. The evening was led by Mr Pierre Frenzel who conducted and guided all the children. Mr Pierre Frenzel teaches violin here at Clifton. It was a lovely concert and wonderful for the Clifton violinists to attend. Well done to all the children involved!
Well done to the Grade 7 Marimba band who went on a day tour of the Midlands on Wednesday! Ms Kaolin Thomson and Mr Erik de Villiers accompanied the band as they travelled to Thembelihle and Treverton. The children not only performed at the two venues, but also practised a new song with their marimba bands. This is in preparation for the massed item at the upcoming Clifton Marimba Festival taking place on Thursday 7 November. We are looking so forward to the concert and the hosting of many other marimba bands at Clifton.

Well done to all the children on their outstanding Trinity Music Examination results. A special mention must be made of those children who received a distinction (above 87%): Victoria Woodland, Imibongo Somhlahlo, Lufuno Ndanganeni and Cameron Buchanan. Well done!

Over the weekend, Midlands JKA Karate club held its Club grading. All the karateka (all Clifton children) performed very well and enjoyed a demonstration by a group of black belts from the Club’s sister dojo in Kloof. Below is a photo of the children with their certificates.
