The area of the ozone hole expanded significantly from 2004 to 2009. The color picture is the latest satellite image on Oct. 20, 2009 with the ozone hole area (blue) reaching a new record of 10.6 million square mile.

In 2009, NASA launched Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) to collect the accurate data on greenhouse gas in the atmosphere for determining the source, absorption and dissipating locations. In 2010, Obama Administration approved to appropriate 2.4 billion dollars to NASA in the coming 5 years specifically for developing and launching this kind of satellites for further research on global climate change.
