Daily Backup Window Large performance impact on producKon
Data Loss Exposure Lose all data since last backup – no validaKon
Many Systems to Manage Scale by deploying more backup appliances
Poor Database Recoverability Many files are copied but protecKon state of database is unknown

Enhanced SeparaKon of Duty
• New parameter in protecKon policy to block RMAN DELETE operaKons on backups stored in the appliance – Prevents single admin (DB or RA) from deleKng DB and its backups
– Storage appliances have zero awareness of errant DELETE operaKons, which can lead to compromise of business SLAs
– Significant differenKator illustraKng centralized, database-‐aware protec3on as a service vs. generic file backups

• ERP ImplementaKon – 11.2 & 12.1.0.2 Database Versions – Have both RAC and non-‐RAC databases
• Different data centers for prod and QA • Backup retenKon period of 15 days • Unreliable restore and recovery • Lengthy database cloning process
• Local BCV mirror + FS snapshot + VTL – QA/Staging DBs cloned across data centers
• Restore challenges: – Careful coordinaKon between DB and SA groups – Unreliable process led to inconsistent restores – Lack of validaKon caused recovery uncertainty
• Database cloning challenges: – Impacts producKon servers – Cross data center cloning jobs could take days

Recovery Appliance Benefits
• Fast, Reliable Database Recovery & Cloning – Recovery Appliance eliminates manual, error prone backup / restore process
• Previously, three groups (Database, UNIX, Storage Admins) had to coordinate restore and recovery. • Cross data center cloning impacted producKon servers and could take days (FS sent over WAN)
– Now, databases can be restored/cloned directly from primary or replica Recovery Appliance without user intervenKon and in hours vs days.
• Reduce Risk – Recovery Appliance provides real-‐Kme recovery window and RPO status for each database – End-‐to-‐End Oracle-‐aware backup validaKon
• Centralized & Simpler Database Backup, Restore, Cloning Process – DBAs ulKmately responsible for Recovery in any and all situaKons!
