Architect David Clinkston of Clinkston Brunner Architects designed the home to be a model of sustainable construction on a challenging site

Foundation Work
The house sits on a series
of deep, auger cast piles and
six interconnected grade beams
that keep it firmly anchored to
the site
Soldier piles provide additional shoring for the adjacent roadbed

Insulated Concrete Forms
A portion of the foundation is constructed of insulated concrete forms (ICFs)
ICFs use expanded polystyrene with concrete poured in the middle after rebar has been inserted for reinforcement
Result is a strong foundation wall that uses less concrete and is fully insulated

Structural Insulated
Panels (SIPs)
SIPs were used to build the floors,
walls and roof of the Zero Energy
Idea House
A SIP building envelope provides
high levels of insulation and is
extremely airtight
The amount of energy used to heat
and cool a home can be used by
up to 50 percent

Planted Living Wall
Structurally engineered installation
that combines compost with special
netting for reinforcement
Attractive alternative to a concrete or
masonry retaining wall that also
absorbs storm water and produces
oxygen
As the plants grow, their root systems
make the wall even stronger
