JOHN AND WOOLLYAT WORK

After the band and managementmeetings in March, where it wasdecided that Barclay James Harvestshould take a sabbatical fromrecording and touring for theimmediate future, the first details arebeginning to emerge of the plannedsolo ventures.

John’s Plans

The most welcome piece of news isthat John has recently been workingwith Woolly, who we are delighted tosay is becoming heavily involved inmusic again. This marks John andWoolly’s first musical collaborationsince 1979, when they last appearedtogether on stage at four open-airfestivals in Germany with BarclayJames Harvest.

Woolly himself is writing new songs, including one called “Float”, and it islikely that this and others will berecorded at John’s Friarmere studio aspart of an album. This album lookslikely to be a joint venture betweenJohn and Woolly, with both musicianscontributing songs or even jointcompositions.

John is very keen to tour the UK,which he feels has been neglected inrecent years. It’s too early to say whoelse is likely to be in any touring band,as first the financial viability of such aventure must be assessed, promoters

approached etc. Still, if it comes off, this must represent the best chancefor UK fans, who have been starved ofany live performances for over sixyears, to see some Barclay JamesHarvest songs performed live again, plus, of course, some brand newmaterial.

John has been approached againabout a possible release for his soloalbum, A Major Fancy, and isconsidering a number of options atpresent. He also has plans for anillustrated book based on his lyricsand the stories behind some of hissongs. Watch this space!

Les’s Plans

Les has been busy writing newmaterial, so we can look forward tosome musical output from him beforetoo long, either in recorded or liveform.

We expect to be able to bring youmore information in time for the nextissue of NL, due out at the end ofAugust.

Song Lyrics

EDEN UNOBTAINABLE

Things I said beforeNo meaning any moreI can't seem to recallPlaces that I've seenIt's like I've never beenSometimes I feel so small

And if I was to askWhat it's all aboutHow could I find outIf it's true?

Things I said beforeNo meaning any moreI can't seem to recallPlaces that I've seenIt's like I've never beenSometimes I feel so small

THE JOKER

I think I'm going back from where IcameThere's something that I feel but can'texplainPeople running round and roundPutting one another downThe joker laughs the joker criesHe sees the world through weary eyesPeople running round and roundPutting one another down

Too many people, they don't knowwhere they're goingThere are no haloes showing"Peace and love", just greed and hateIt's not too late to see we're all thesameThe joker sees a better wayBut people laugh and turn away

Mel’s Plans

When we spoke to Mel recently, hewas very keen to get into playing liveor recording again. He’s keeping inpractice, and would be more thanhappy to work with either John or Les(or both!) on their side projects if theyrequire his style of drumming. He wasparticularly enthusiastic about touringin Britain, so let’s hope that we’ll seehim on the road again soon.

Band Interviews

From the letters, telephone calls ande-mails which we have been receiving, there are obviously a lot of fans outthere who were disappointed orpuzzled by the band’s decision to takea sabbatical. Rather than speculate inthe pages of this magazine about thereasoning behind the decision or aboutwhat the band should or shouldn’t do,we thought that it would be fairer totalk to them directly about theirindividual plans and about the futureof Barclay James Harvest as a band.

I’m very pleased to say that we will beconducting telephone interviews withMel, Les and John in time for the nextedition of Nova Lepidoptera, due outin September. This will be the firsttime that we have carried exclusiveinterviews with all three bandmembers in one issue, and shouldmake essential reading for anyBarclays fan. In the meantime, ourmessage to fans is to stay with it -we’ve enjoyed over thirty years’ worthof classic BJH music, and we believethat there’s plenty more to come.

CD News

We’re pleased to say that the nextrelease on our own Brimstone label, aCD of the quadraphonic mix of OnceAgain, is on again. Sales of EarlyMorning Onwards have picked up, sowe’ve decided to throw caution to thewind and issue a second CD!

Those who are unfamiliar with the(very rare) quadraphonic version ofthe LP may be surprised - in places itsounds quite different from thefamiliar stereo version, includingguitar parts and extra vocal harmonieson some songs, as well as beingmixed differently. The CD should beavailable in the autumn, and will havea foldout booklet with lyrics and notes, designed by our mysterious music-bizpartner in the Brimstone Recordsproject...

Talking of Woolly, the limited boxedset of the Songs From The Black BoxCD is now almost sold out. We expectto have the normal version in stock forthe foreseeable future, but anyonewho wants the special edition shouldwaste no time! The set comprises thestandard CD in its jewel case, threephotos of Woolly and the band, afolded sheet with a black and whitephoto of BJH and a summary ofWoolly’s musical career, plus anumbered certificate, all containedwithin a black cardboard boxautographed in silver by the manhimself.

The Songs From The Black Box CD hasalso been released in Japan byVoiceprint with an additional insert inJapanese (VPJ 014). Thanks to YukoImamura for the information.

Promo CD

Thanks to Andreas Gab for telling usabout a special promo edition of theRiver Of Dreams CD. The CD, whichcarries the same catalogue number asthe standard release, comes in aslimline CD-single style box with thesame front-cover artwork, a shortversion of the track details andartwork information, and the CD itselfhas a completely different design. Some of these promo CDs were sentout together with a marzipan cake offinest German Niederegger quality.Bizarrely, the cake features thebutterfly from the XII album with allfour original members of BJH and thewording “Barclay James Harvest, RiverOf Dreams”.

Russian CDs

News reaches us of CD reissues fromRussia of two BJH albums, namelyVictims Of Circumstance (CD MediaRecords) and Caught In The Light(Agat Company). We’re told that bothCDs, which feature sleevenoteswritten in Russian, are officialreleases, although the chances of BJHseeing any royalties seem slim.

Child’s Play

As if one weren’t enough (!), Monika isexpecting our second child inSeptember. In addition to playinghavoc with my 40th birthdaycelebrations, the impending happyevent is likely to cause a few problemswith the smooth running of the club. Please be patient if things go a littlehaywire for a while; we’ll do our bestto fulfil CD orders and the like quickly, but answering letters will be muchmore difficult. Come to think of it,we’re already behind, so apologies forthat, but at least now you know why...

EMO Review

The following review appeared in theApril 1998 edition of Record Collectormagazine:-

- 15 -

I Remember It Well

I have been a fan of The Moody Bluessince I was seven years old. My eldersister brought their records home andI progressively learned to listen totheir music.

At faculty I had a colleague who, knowing that I liked the Moodies, toldme, “Then you must also appreciateBarclay James Harvest.” However, wenever exchanged records; mycuriosity wasn’t large enough at thattime.

Two or three years ago I used to listento a radio programme called “Serra deEstrelas” (unfortunately it finishedrecently), because the presenterregularly played Moody Blues tracks. It was the time of the Best Of BarclayJames Harvest release, so he alsoplayed BJH songs such as “Hymn” and“Poor Man’s Moody Blues”. It was thelatter, of course, that captured myattention and brought me themotivation to research the musicalcareer of the band.

Now I have all the studio records ofBJH and I am a dedicated fan. I alsotake this opportunity to congratulatethe staff of the Fan Club for theexcellent and interesting newslettersthat are published.

I can say that I have been lucky withthe Moody Blues, although it is noteasy to live at a short corner ofEurope for these purposes. Since Ibecame a member of their official FanClub in 1987, I have attended twoconcerts, in France and in England, and I participated in two Christmasdinners which they offered.

I deeply regret the fact that myinterest in BJH is so recent. I do hope, however, that I get the opportunity tosee them live, at least once, whereverin the world.

Ana Paula Paiva

In which club members share their recollections of how they first becamefans of Barclay James Harvest...

Keith: I ’d just like to add a couple of footnotes here. Firstly, since Ana Paulaw rote this piece she has manged to see BJH perform live in Germany, andthoroughly enjoyed the show .

Secondly, Ana Paula’s contribution w ill be the last in this particular series, aswe feel that it has probably run its course. This doesn’t preclude anyone fromsending us further reminiscences, but they are likely to be used as occasionaladditions to the Feedback pages in NL.

New Internet BJHMailing List Created

Our latest venture is an electronicmailing list discussion group, asubscription to which is free for anyBJH fan with access to the Internet. The list has been provided to us forfree by a company called ONElist, whowill sell a small amount of advertisingspace on each message. We believethat this is an acceptable price to payfor a free world-wide forum wherefans can discuss all things BJH.

You subscribe to the list by giving afew details such as your e-mailaddress and home town (but not yourfull address), and then any messagessent to the list will automatically beforwarded to you, either individuallyor in a daily “digest” form. You canremove yourself from the list at anytime, and your details will not bepassed on to any other organisations.

The list is unmoderated, i.e. messagesare not censored before being postedto the list. If, however, we have anyproblems with unacceptablemessages, we as the list owners havethe power to remove individuals fromthe list; this is not something whichwe expect to happen, BJH fans beingsuch a sensible and peaceable lot!

The simplest way to join the list is toaccess it through our Web Site. Finally, although the list is open to all,we will ensure that club members arestill the first to know about anyimportant news - only after that willwe post the information to the generalmailing list.

Web Site Expanding

Our official Internet Web Site forBarclay James Harvest continues toexpand, with illustrated world-widediscographies and concert listingsbeing the most recent additions. Theinformation is basically an updatedversion of that found in The BJH File, with the addition of colour pictures ofrare and interesting BJH singles andalbums from all over the world.

CD-ROM Planned

On the subject of The BJH File, theexhaustive (and exhausting!) BJHreference book which we published in1996, we are planning a new edition. The 1998 version will only be availableas a CD-ROM, and will includecompletely revised and updateddiscographies and concert listings. Itwill also have numerous colourpictures and, possibly, even somepreviously unheard snippets of music. We hope to have the first version ofthe CD available towards the end ofthis year. Work will also continue(babies allowing!) on the BJHbiography, which will be inconventional book form.

..Other Short Stories..

...Marcus Kuberg has come up withanother meaning of John’s enigmatic“Mr. E” - the song is played in the keyof E Minor...

tonight lives on for years...Our occasional series featuring classic live shows from the band’s thirty

year history continues with four very early showpiece concerts. These were the band’s first live gigs with the orchestra, including by far the

most prestigious venue that BJH had played to date, London’s famousRoyal Albert Hall.

From the beginning, BJH’s music hada strong classical flavour, with theMellotron used to reproduce the soundof a string section. Then came TheBarclay James Harvest Orchestra, which comprised former members ofthe New Symphonia, an orchestra puttogether by Martyn Ford from the beststudents of the London music colleges.

In order to promote their debutalbum, the band took the bold step ofplaying a short showcase tour with theorchestra. John Crowther estimated

that the four concerts cost £10,000, ahuge sum in 1970 for a virtuallyunknown group. The tour must havebeen a nightmare to organise; themusicians were ferried around in afleet of coaches, and the orchestravaried in size from about forty inEdinburgh to over a hundred inLondon!

Rehearsals took place at the Lyceumin London, with Robert Godfreyconducting the orchestra and MartynFord as its leader.

BJH on the InternetThe Web is democratic by nature, meaning that anybody can publishinformation on their own Web Site, and many of the larger InternetService Providers give their customersfree Web Space on the companyserver to do just that. The result is aplethora of Home Pages on everysubject under the sun, including a fewdedicated to BJH. Some of these arerun by club members, and our ownsite contains links to them as well asto related subjects which may be ofinterest - currently the pages whichcan be accessed from our site includea David Rohl and Mandalaband pageand one covering the history ofStrawberry Studios where much ofBJH’s 70s output was recorded.

Whilst the Web is the most visible faceof the Internet, it is not the only partof interest to BJH fans. The humble e-mail is invaluable, not just for keepingin touch with friends, but for receivingthe latest news. We maintain a list ofon-line club members (currentlynumbering over a hundred, or nearlya quarter of the total membership)who receive free e-mail bulletins whenthere is any important newsconcerning the band. Naturally, westill send out postal bulletins as well, but the e-mail facility is invaluablewhen, for instance, there are last-minute changes to tour schedules orwe get short notice of the bandappearing on TV or radio.

Our most recent experiment inspreading the word about BJH is amailing list, a kind of global discussionforum for fans of the band. The listworks using standard e-mail,automatically redistributing anymessages received to all subscribers. The best part is that, like the WebSite, it’s completely free.

The Internet has huge advantages sofar as those of us who run the club areconcerned, as well: instead ofspending hours stuffing letters andmagazines into envelopes, frankingthem and carting them round to thelocal Post Office, we can upload thelatest news to the Web Site or send amessage to hundreds of fans at thetouch of a button or two, for the priceof one local telephone call.

For the band, too, there areadvantages - the Web Site acts as abig free advertisement for them, letting people all over the world knowwhat they are up to and selling CDs topeople in countries (like the UK, forinstance!) where the albums have notbeen released.

As more and more people go on-line,it looks increasingly as though thefuture of the club lies with the Net, orits successor. If you’re not on-line,don’t panic just yet, as we expect tooffer a paper-based service for theforeseeable future, but in the longerterm, the prospect of reaching a muchwider audience almostinstantaneously, providing colourpictures, sounds and virtuallyunlimited information, whilstsubstantially reducing our ownworkload, is just too good to ignore.

tonight lives on for years...By the time of the concerts the debutalbum was due for imminent release, although the recording had beencompleted by the end of 1969. Theband accordingly had plenty of newmaterial, and rather than play onlysongs from the first album, they triedout six brand new songs which hadnot yet been recorded.

Of these six, “Mockingbird”,“Galadriel” and “She Said” went on tobecome the core of the classic OnceAgain album, whilst “White Sails”(with orchestra), “Wandering” and“Too Much On Your Plate” never madeit (although the latter was resurrectedfor a fan club flexi-disc, and “WhiteSails” may yet see the light of day). The Albert Hall concert, at least, wasrecorded for the band, butunfortunately the tape doesn’t seemto have survived.

BJH on the Internet

Wherever you look at the moment, itseems that you can’t avoid theInternet. It’s the biggest hype of thedecade, yet many people are unawareof exactly what it is and whether it isof any real use. We’ve been on the so-called information superhighway for acouple of years, so here’s a personalview of what it’s all about, withparticular reference, naturally, toBarclay James Harvest.

What Is It?

The Net, as it’s usually known, is aworldwide network of computers, connected up via telephone links, satellites etc. It was originallyconceived as a method of maintainingmilitary communications in wartime, but has now outgrown that function. The Internet itself can be used to sendelectronic messages (e-mail) and filesaround the world, but it was theinvention of the World Wide Webwhich made the Net of interest to amuch wider public. The Web allowsthe use of not just e-mail and text, but also full-colour pictures, sounds, animations etc. The Internet becameaccessible, and useful, to non-technical people, and the Net suddenlybecame big news.

Why Get Wired?

What are the benefits of thistechnology? Firstly, it is the only trulyglobal medium; material published onthe Web can be viewed anywhere inthe world, effortlessly crossing culturaland political boundaries, a fact whichhas enormous (and so far largelyunresolved) implications for

democracy, freedom of informationand censorship.

The second advantage is that it isrelatively easy and cheap to publishon the Net, so it’s possible to reach ahuge potential audience. Morepractically, being on the Internetenables you to send messages all overthe world for the price of a localtelephone call, far quicker than aletter. The average time taken for anelectronic message, or e-mail, toreach its destination is a matter ofminutes - no wonder that convertsrefer to the good old-fashioned postalsystem as “snail-mail”!

Where’s The Catch?

Of course there are drawbacks. Theobvious one is that you need acomputer, immediately putting the Netout of the reach of many people. However, computers are becomingmuch more common at work and inhomes, and prices are falling. Set-topboxes as a TV add-on are nowavailable for around the price of avideo recorder. Another way for thosewho don’t own a computer to accessthe Net is via cybercafés, wherevisitors can pay for Internet access bythe hour.

The next requirement is somethingcalled a modem (modulator/demodulator), which convertscomputer files into a form which canbe transmitted down a normaltelephone line. These now come asstandard with most new computers, and are relatively cheap and easy to

- 11 -

BJH on the Internetfit even if your machine doesn’t haveone.

The final thing you need is a way ofdialing into the Internet, which meansopening an account with an InternetService Provider (ISP). What thismeans in practice is paying a monthlyfee of the order of £5.00 to £20.00,depending on how much you use theservice. Popular ISPs for the lesstechnically-minded include AOL,CompuServe, Demon and BT Internet.

What’s In It For Me?

You’ve spent your money on acomputer with a modem, you’vesigned up with a service provider andinstalled their software on yourmachine. Now what? The first thingyou can do is to send e-mail to letpeople know that you’re on-line. Youprobably have friends who are alreadyon the Net, but if not, send a messageto us! Your provider will have givenyou an e-mail address (one of thosethings that looks [email protected]), so nowyou can pass it round and soon yourvirtual mailbox will start to fill up.

Then the real fun starts, as youinvestigate the Web (or “surf the Net”,as the popular, if mixed, metaphorhas it). If you can think of a subject, somebody has published a pagededicated to it - even BJH!One part of the software you will nowhave on your computer is a WebBrowser. (If you don’t, thosephilanthropic (?) people at Microsoftand Netscape are falling overthemselves to give them away free on

computer magazine cover discs). Youcan use the browser to look up aspecific page (try our very own officialBJH Home Page, whose address is atthe end of this article), or you canlook for any given subject using the“Search” button.

BJH on the Net

So far, so good, but what does the Nethave to offer to the music fan ingeneral, and the BJH fan in particular? In fact, fans of artists who don’t enjoywidespread media coverage havemost to gain, because these artistsare almost invariably featured on theNet - for instance, artists of a similarvintage and musical style such as AlanParsons, The Strawbs, Procol Harumand Supertramp all have informative,well-run Web Sites or electronicmailing lists maintained byenthusiastic fans.

In BJH’s case, we maintain the officialWeb Site which includes not just thelatest news, but also an extensivearchive. The latter acts as a repositoryof background information such as thehistory of the band, pictures, soundclips, worldwide discographies, lists ofconcerts down the years etc. Thisinformation is available for free toanyone who cares to access it, andwill be continuously expanded overthe years to become the definitive BJHresource. A recent addition to the siteis a secure order form so that creditcard holders can order any currentlyavailable BJH CDs on-line without fearof anyone else intercepting theirdetails.
