Here it is May and the club has a number of things going on. We have a tour planned for Saturday May 16

from East of Milton to Hemmingway’s on Pensacola Beach. This will be an easy drive to a wonderful spot on

Pensacola Beach for lunch. If you want to attend You Must Sign Up on clubregistration.net. This is a no cost

registration web site that we have been trying to get folks to use. If you want to do Track events all the Clubs

that sponsor events use this web site to register.

We are in the planning stages of another Tour /rally/ poker run up into the Camden, Al area for some very nice

roads and a special lunch.

We have two more dates in the fall for our Autocross events at Robertsdale, AL. Starting with the September

event the club will be using Club Registration.net for all of our entries. Entries will be closed the Thursday @8

PM CST before the event. If you Do Not Pre Enter you will not run. We request the use of the Robertsdale site

in January of each year and we get four dates. These dates cannot be changed. Auto crossing in the rain can

teach you some very valuable lessons on how your car will handle in the wet.

I was very disappointed with the no shows for the April 18th Autocross. A couple of us worked Friday night to

clean the parking lot and set up the course. Since no one showed up I think we will use the same course

design in September. When we don’t have an event the club is still out money if we don’t run. I would rather

spend club funds on fun things instead of nonevents. If you sign up for a DE you run in the rain or snow and

the money you put out for that is not refunded.

Parade is coming up in June and we have three members going I wish we had more going. I know we will not

have many going next year when it will be in Vermont.

Fairhope Arts Festival 2015 Editor

The annual Fairhope Arts Festival was held during the weekend on March 21, and, unlike last year, the

weather cooperated nicely. We had a caravan of about 12 Club Porsches that departed from Pensacola for a

nice run through the country enroute to Fairhope on Saturday, March 21. Once again, we had the pleasure of

parking downtown under the big live oaks, a stone throw away from the festivities, courtesy of the British Car

Club of Fairhope. After arrival, we all grouped up and headed over to Pinzone’s Italian restaurant, right in the

heart of the festival, for an excellent lunch. A number of us then browsed through the arts festival…and

perhaps picked up some treasures! Some photos are below:

Indycars at NOLA Motorsports Track Pete Mellin

I returned to the NOLA Motorsports track the weekend of April 10-12 for the Indycar and Porsche GT3 Cup races. You may recall from the last newsletter my report on a DE event in late February. Since none of Indycar teams invited me to drive, I was there as a lowly spectator this time. Here are some observations. I arrived Friday to watch practices and qualifying for the six different classes of cars. Very interesting. The stands were only about 5% full, so it was like the Rolex 24 at Daytona where you could sit nearly anywhere. There is no public parking on the grounds, so we were shuttled from the off-site parking lots about five minutes away ($20 per day for parking, with no Porsche discounts), and that worked OK. I was especially interested in Indycar lap times and their speed at the end of the two longest straights to see how they compared with mine from the DE. Here are the Indycar numbers from discussions with one driver and several crewmembers: Car Lap time Top speed before Turn 1 Top speed before Turn 10 Indycar 1:18 190 175 Pete 2:08 130 115 GT3 Cup 1:42 ---- ----

I think their higher speeds were only part of the faster times, because they were braking a lot later than I had been, despite higher speed, and their pace through the corners was hard to believe. Unfortunately the rain arrived at 3:30 and I headed back to the hotel. Later I saw a photo of a huge bolt of lightning in the background during the Indycar practice session. I stayed at the Baymont Inn and Suites (very nice, just like a Best Western) about 3 miles from the parking area, and found a muffuletta shop that was wonderful. It was an excellent complement to Mo's Pizza that I had discovered on the DE trip. Saturday was more practice sessions and qualifying, plus a few races. The excellent Mazda MX-5 Cup race reminded of a mini NASCAR event for how evenly the top six cars were matched and for all the contact that occurred. As far as a competitive event, this was the best race of the weekend, as the lead changed on every lap. The GT3 Cup race was fun to watch, but the top two cars just ran away from the field, so the only competitive part was in the pack. Once again rain chased me away about 4:00. Roger and Casey Gilmore arrived that afternoon, so we had a nice visit at the track before the rain, and then a great dinner at Mo's. Sunday brought more rain, and the first race of the day (Prototype Lites) was canceled, with the two main events, the second GT3 Cup race and the Indycars, being moved up an hour. One lower tier race (USF2000) started about 9:30 in the rain, and every lap featured cars sliding off the track. They finally red-flagged the race, and whoever was leading at the time got the win. Our track entertainment for the next hour or two was to watch track water-removal equipment futilely try to stay ahead of the rain. The rain was light but steady, and the track appeared to accumulate nearly every drop, being the lowest point around. So much water accumulated that a snowplow (as in up North) was used to PLOW water from the track! There were 8-10 places on the track where huge sheets of water curled off the top of the plow and into the infield. Every time around the track, new water had replaced that recently plowed. During this exercise they announced all races except Indycars were canceled. Bored, discouraged, and tired of being wet while sitting, I left my seat to be wet while walking. About 12:30, when I was ready to head for I-10 East, they announced a clearing was expected and the Indycar race would be run at about 1:45. It did indeed happen, but only 47 of a scheduled 75 laps were completed. As with the earlier race, even though a dry line had been established, cars were still leaving the track at an amazing rate, and more laps were run under yellow than green. It was pretty boring, and when a big three-car crash occurred near the end, with body panels flying everywhere; I gave up and headed home. In rain all the way, of course. James Hinchcliff won that race, but only because he was in the lead when the green racing ended. Interesting, but not competitive. So I'm glad I went, as maintenance activities in the paddock were very interesting, but the racing was a disappointment, mostly due to weather. (ADDENDUM…from your Editor) As Pete mentioned, my wife and I got trackside around noon on Saturday. Casey, although not an avid race fan, will occasionally watch some races on TV. After much lobbying, I convinced her to go to her first ever live

race. And being the inaugural Louisiana Grand Prix, it was going to be a superb weekend: A score of races, capped off by the Indycar GP, all kinds of ongoing live music, and great local food. NOT! The weather put the kibosh on all of that! I had my wallet zipped up in a presumably watertight pocket inside my raincoat and even it got wet. And no, I didn’t take my camera out of the car, so no photos. We got home Sunday in time to watch the last 30 minutes of the Indycar race on TV. My wife’s comment: “Gee, you can see a lot more on TV than you can at the track!” I think it will be a tough sell to get her to go to another race, but you never know… Here are some trivia tidbits about the 2015 Indycars, and the stock photos below show the differences in the new aero kits between the Chevy and Honda engine cars: Weight: 1575 lbs. Engine: 2.2-liter V6 turbocharged, 12,000 RPM, approx 700 HP. Performance: 0 to 100 MPH: Less than 3 seconds (what??!!). Max lateral G’s: Approx 5.

(THE TECHNICAL NOTES…)

THIS ISSUE: WHO ON EARTH IS RUDOLF DIESEL? (From your Editor)

This article will hopefully be of interest to all, and, in particular, to some of you Cayenne owners who have

opted for a certain engine type. But, before we get to that, it will be beneficial to review the basic inner

workings of the internal combustion engine. I’m sure you’ve all heard of the terms “4-stroke” and “2-stroke”

engines (or 4 and 2 “cycle” engines). Most modern car engines are of the 4-stroke variety so we’ll take a brief

look at some of the details of that engine type. 2-stroke engines are common in small engines (chainsaws,

etc.) and are the type where you generally have to add oil to the gas…and that’s as far as we’ll go with that!

A 4-stroke engine has 4 distinct strokes or cycles that are continuously repeated while the engine is running.

A “stroke” is where the piston travels the full length of the cylinder, either up or down (or, in the case of

Porsche’s famous flat-six engines, in and out!). Refer to the cartoon diagram below:

Page 21: Zeitschrift - Sonnenschein PCA May 2015.pdfI arrived Friday to watch practices and qualifying for the six different classes of cars. Very interesting. The stands were only about 5%

21

1. Intake: This stroke begins with the piston at top dead center (i.e., at the top of the cylinder). The piston descends from the top of the cylinder to the bottom of the cylinder, increasing the volume of the cylinder. The intake valve opens, and a mixture of fuel and air are forced by atmospheric pressure into the cylinder through the intake port. (Turbocharging or supercharging forces in an air/fuel mixture that is greater than atmospheric pressure.)

2. Compression: With both intake and exhaust valves closed, the piston returns to the top of the cylinder compressing the air/fuel mixture into the cylinder head.

3. Power: This is the start of the second revolution of the cycle. When the piston is close to top dead center, the compressed air/fuel mixture is ignited by a spark plug in gasoline engines. (Diesel engines are a bit different as this article discusses.) The resulting pressure from the combustion of the compressed air/fuel mixture forces the piston back down toward bottom dead center.

4. Exhaust: During the exhaust stroke, the piston once again returns to top dead center while the exhaust valve is open. This expels the spent air/fuel mixture through the exhaust valve and the exhaust system of the vehicle to return to the atmosphere. If you have difficulty remembering the technical names of the 4-stroke cycle, a less “technical”

description…that may be easier to remember...is: “Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow”.

So…what about Rudolf Diesel? Born in 1858, he was a German inventor and mechanical engineer, famous for

the invention of the diesel engine. He first worked with steam, his research into thermal efficiency and fuel

efficiency leading him to build a steam engine using ammonia vapor. During tests, however, the engine

exploded and almost killed him. He spent many months in a hospital, followed by health and eyesight

problems. He then began designing an engine based on the Carnot cycle (a type of heat engine) and in 1893,

soon after Karl Benz was granted a patent for his invention of the motorcar in 1886, Diesel published a treatise

that formed the basis for his work on and invention of the diesel engine. Eventually, he obtained a patent for

his design for a compression-ignition engine. In his engine, fuel was injected at the end of compression and

the high temperature resulting from compression ignited the fuel.

Thus we have the main difference between a diesel engine and a gasoline engine: In a diesel engine the heat of compressing only air causes combustion of fuel that is injected directly into the cylinder, whereas a gasoline engine compresses an air/fuel mixture (there are exceptions to this…more later on) which is then ignited by a spark plug. Due to the higher compression temperature, a diesel engine is thermodynamically more efficient than a gasoline engine. It also gains efficiency by the type of fuel it uses. If you have ever compared diesel fuel and gasoline, you know that they are different. They certainly smell different. Diesel fuel is heavier and oilier. It evaporates much more slowly than gasoline -- its boiling point is actually higher than the boiling point of water. You will often hear diesel fuel referred to as "diesel oil" because it's so oily. Diesel fuel evaporates more slowly because it is heavier. It contains more carbon atoms in longer chains than gasoline does (gasoline typically has 9 carbon atoms, while diesel fuel typically has 14). Diesel fuel has a higher energy density than gasoline. On average, 1 gallon (3.8 L) of diesel fuel contains approximately 147,000 BTU, while 1 gallon of gasoline contains 125,000 BTU. This, combined with the improved efficiency of diesel engines, explains why diesel engines get better mileage than equivalent gasoline engines. Here’s a link to a short, but excellent, animation and description of how a diesel engine works, and is also good for understanding the 4-stroke engine, either diesel or gasoline powered. It’s worth a look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2WGFELXPNg

Page 22: Zeitschrift - Sonnenschein PCA May 2015.pdfI arrived Friday to watch practices and qualifying for the six different classes of cars. Very interesting. The stands were only about 5%

22

As with all things, diesel engines have their advantages and disadvantages. Here some of the pertinent ones: PRO: Increased efficiency means better fuel economy, typically 25-30% better than a gasoline engine. CON: Nowadays, diesel fuel usually costs a bit more than regular grade gasoline. PRO: As they have neither spark plugs nor distributor, they never need ignition tune-ups. CON: Increased vigilance for regular oil changes and fuel filter changes. PRO: They are built more ruggedly to withstand the rigors of higher compression. Consequently, they usually go much longer than gas-powered vehicles before they require major repairs. Mercedes-Benz holds the longevity record with several vehicles clocking more than 900,000 miles on their original engines! You may not want to hang onto the same vehicle for 900,000 miles, but longevity and dependability like that can sure help with trade-in and resale values. CON: Some repairs may be more expensive, especially if you’ve neglected regular maintenance. PRO: They produce more torque. Diesels are usually designed as long-stroke engines specifically to generate torque. The longer the stroke, the more offset the crankshaft pin has from the centerline of the crankshaft. This means the connecting rod can exert more leverage to turn the crank as the piston descends on the power stroke. This is possible because the heavy components of a diesel necessary to withstand the high compression ratio, and high cylinder pressure on the power stroke, limit engine speed anyway, so excessive piston speed associated with long strokes isn't a problem. Now, back to one of the main differences between diesel and gasoline engines: Direct injection. Recall that a diesel injects fuel directly into the cylinder at the top of the compression stroke. A fuel injected gasoline engine typically has what is termed “port fuel injection”, which is where fuel is injected into each cylinder’s intake runner (or “port”) with the net result that an air/fuel mixture enters the cylinder on the intake stroke. Until recently, that is. Newer vehicles, and especially high performance cars, have begun using what is called “Direct Fuel Injection”, or DFI. Hmmm…sounds like a diesel, doesn’t it? It is the same principle of fuel delivery, and thus the lines become somewhat blurred as to the differences between the two engine types.

ALSO SEE THE EVENTS CALENDER ON THE CLUB’S WEBSITE!

AUTOCROSS!!! These are always a blast and the Club always sets up a fun & challenging course. If you’ve never been to one,

give it a try! And don’t feel intimidated! It is really just for fun and without exception everyone who’s been to

their first one leaves with a huge grin on their face.

I'd like to encourage you to come out and see how the autocross works, meet the other members, see the cars, help work the corners and timing table. Bring your lawn chair; it's a fun time. Of course, we'd like for you to get out on the lot and practice your cornering and braking! If you are a new member, this would be a great time to say hello. If you’re new to autocrossing and may want to participate, there are some basic items you’ll need to be aware of: You will need a DOT approved helmet (motorcycle will suffice), closed-toed shoes, and seat belts. To prepare your car, remove everything from the cockpit that may fly around during braking and cornering. At the course, a Club tech inspector will check your lug nuts and under the hood to make sure that nothing is going to fly off the car. Think of your favorite number and we'll supply the painter's tape for you to mark your car, unless you have your own numbers. It's not a race; it's an opportunity for you to try your hand at performance driving all in the safety and confines of a parking lot. We love to watch the new drivers, but what we really love to hear is the laughter coming from the car when they swing about the slaloms and turns for the first time. When you see your elapsed time drop and drop with each run, you'll be hooked. You MUST pre-register by using the below link: https://clubregistration.net The registration will close at 8PM CST on the Thursday before the event.

RENNSPORT REUNION V

It’s official: Rennsport Reunion V will be held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on October 9-11 next year, according to Porsche Cars North America (PCNA), four years after the fourth installment of the world-renowned Porsche festival. Rennsport V is expected to attract hundreds of vintage and modern Porsche race cars, "as well as those who have designed, engineered, and driven them to victory in the world's most famous sports car races," PCNA states. Like Rennsports before it, number five will consist of three days of vintage racing, a Concours d'Elegance, and activities celebrating each of six decades of Porsche race cars — all crash courses of Porsche history. Porsche Club of America is an official Rennsport Reunion V partner, so look to their website and social media

channels for official updates and information in the coming year.

PORSCHE SPONSORED EVENTS

Porsche has two excellent events for high performance driving that you may wish to consider:

1. Porsche Sport Driving School. This is held at Barber Motorsports Park on a regular basis. Here’s a link to

their website which also has an excellent video about the School:

https://www.porschedriving.com/centers/Porsche-Sport-Driving-School

New at Barber are the Barber Motorsports Park Proving Grounds. This is a 22 acre, multi-use facility comprised of a track (the Handling Circuit) with multiple configuration possibilities (the track includes a large, banked turn), a large skid pad and plenty of paved area to either extend the length of the Handling Circuit or add additional exercises like Performance Driving Techniques, Lane Change and Turbo Launch. The facility can be used for corporate Half Day and Full Day Dynamic Driving Programs. I’ve not yet seen this in person at Barber, but the aerial photo of it on the “Facilities” tab of the above website look pretty awesome!

2. The Porsche Experience Center. This is a brand new facility in Atlanta, and will be opening May 2015. The

Center will be offer many different items, from 6 different track environments to simulators, human

performance labs, a restaurant, and more. Take some time to explore their website:

HIGH PERFORMANCE DRIVER’S EDUCATION (HPDE, or just DE)

Tired of the daily commute? Then get your Porsche out on the track, where it was meant to be! You must

register online at www.clubregistration.net for PCA sponsored events. Here are upcoming dates for PCA

sponsored DE’s in our area:

Alabama PCA at Barber Motorsports Park: Their next event will be June 20-21. They have recently

added a new offering, which may be of interest for those curious of what a HPDE weekend is all about. It’s

called the Driver’s Ed Experience and consists of an introductory HPDE course, Saturday only, attendance at

drivers meeting, 2 classroom sessions, reduced speed track demonstration and reduced speed track driving

with an instructor. The cost for this is $100. The cost for the regular 2-day DE is $525.

Mardi Gras Region PCA at NOLA Motorsports Park: Their next event is June 6-7. Registration is now

open and the cost is $325 for 2 days, or $225 for 1 day. Those are great prices!

Peachstate PCA at Road Atlanta: Their next DE events will be May 30-31, August 29-30, and October 24-

25. Registration is open for the May event, and will open 7/15/15 for the August event and 9/7/15 for the

October event. Cost is $450 if solo and $500 with instructor.

There are also non-PCA DE events run by private clubs. Here are 3 good sources and the first two clubs also

use Club Registration (www.clubregistration.net):

1. Chin Motorsports. Access their webpage at http://www.chinmotorsports.com/

for their events in our region: Road Atlanta June 13 & 14; Barber July 11 & 12; Road Atlanta August 22 & 23;

Barber September 19 & 20; and Road Atlanta September 26 & 27, October 17 & 18, and November 28 & 29.

2. PBOC Motorsports Club (Porsche BMW Owners Club). Access their webpage at http://pbocflorida.com/

Rezoom website. Here are their dates for 2015: Barber, August 15 & 16; VIR September 18; Road Atlanta,

October 9, 10, and 11; Barber, November 14 & 15; and Daytona December 4, 5, and 6.

I have copied the story below from PCA E-Brake News of April 28,2015. I’m not sure how many of you read

the E-Brake News, but I found this article to be quite a hoot! Enjoy!

The story of me, my husband and his new mistress

Vicki Floyd

Bruce Floyd leaning against his 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera.

It's finally happened. I always knew it probably would, but I was hopeful we could put it off as long as possible. You see, I have always been the lucky recipient of all my husband Bruce's attention. I was absolutely first in his heart — at the forefront of all his thoughts. It may sound trite, but we have always preferred each other's company to that of anyone else's. We're best friends, have always enjoyed the same things and really had an awesome relationship. In the span of 24 hours, everything changed. She came along — rolling right into his heart with her curvy, little wide body. It's tough enough when your husband's head is so abruptly turned, especially when she's not even 30 years old! And straight from another man, no less. Shameful. He actually had the audacity to bring her home. And, to really twist the knife, he kindly shared with me that she's the one he's dreamed of his entire life. Have you ever heard of the lovely movie star Portia di Rossi? Well, this one's name is Porsche Carrera. And let's not forget her measurements: 911. There's a good reason why 911 is in her name — she's an emergency waiting to happen, especially when she's going full speed, all out on an entrance ramp.

Another of her physical characteristics he likes is her backside, of course. It's even got its own name: Whaletail. And he's smitten with it. One of the things that we have always enjoyed doing together is traveling. So, in the midst of planning our next trip (and thanking my lucky stars that she's too expensive to bring along), he informs me that since we're going to Europe, and we're going to be so close to Germany, he simply must visit her birthplace in Stuttgart. Let's examine this for a moment — I was born in Gainesville, Florida, about an hour and a half from where we live. He has certainly never expressed an interest in seeing the hospital where I was born. Nooooo, but we can traipse all the way to Europe to see where she got her start in life. You know, I always knew where my husband was most of the time. Now? Whenever I look for him, he's nowhere in the house. Where is he? In the garage, staring at her like a lovesick puppy dog. Is he drooling? I remember when he used to stare at me like that. And not only that, it used to be my sweet little Mustang that got the premium garage space. Now she's been kicked into the elements so that Mistress Porsche can have the garage. Not fair. He even goes to meetings now. Like AA, only no one tries to stop the addiction. Rather, they fuel it. Like he needs any encouragement. I have to admit. She is a sweet little thing. Maybe we'll even make friends. But I'll tell you this: I am not getting a whaletail for anybody. Mine is just fine as it is, and my husband will have to make do with it. About the Author
