dance, great theatre and a big dose of the “Wow Factor”. From Bowfire

to Bela Fleck and Spamalot to Drumline, the stars of The Jersey Boys,

In the 1858 Illinois Senate race, Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas embarked on a series of debates. Their epic clash of ideas and oratory forged a future President and a nation. LA Theatre Works production of The Rivalry is a riveting depiction of the Lincoln-Douglas debates, using dialogue from the original debate transcripts to bring to life the fierce competition between the future President and the incumbent Senator as they tackled the day’s most controversial issues.

From May 21 through May 26, The Z celebrates its season finale with one of the most unique and breathtaking ensembles in the world. Moby-Dick has become a part of popular culture throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, popping up in everything from a Led Zeppelin song to The Simpsons to Star Trek. There are many different adaptations of Moby-Dick in a variety of genres. This season, to mark the 160th anniversary of its publication, The Z and The Whaling Museum come together to celebrate the iconic tale of the great whale in art, on screen, in community and on stage. Fun Fact! TWO NEW BEDFORDS: ONE FILM In 1954, John Huston filmed “Moby Dick” with the town of Youghal, Ireland as stand-in for New Bedford. The play “Moby Dick” premiered in Youghal’s Town Hall theater which served as the costume department for the film. That film had its world premiere at The Z. Gare St. Lazare will perform “Moby Dick” on The Z stage and we will welcome the Mayor of Youghal to celebrate the fantastic history of two sea towns linked by the film, performing artists and the on-going link between Ireland and the uSA.*

The Z is committed to providing a diversity of programs, to a broad socio-economic and diverse population that deepen, strengthen and develop children’s curiosity and creativity. We believe that art is the spark that activates young minds - stimulating creative capacities, developing skills and abilities, and promoting lifelong success. To that end The Z’s educational programs are extensive and include: The School-Time Performance Program, Literature Live Literacy Program, Professional Development: Kennedy Center “Partners in Education Program”, In-School Residencies and Workshops and Scholarships. The Z subsidizes all of its Educational programs.

Impact: • 36,720 children…1,250 individual classes… 96 schools, participated in The Z’s curriculum related performance program this past year • 600 teachers have participated in The Z/Kennedy Center Arts Integration Professional Development workshops led by national master teaching artists • 5,540 students participated in The Z’s literacy program

Theater Management. The Z provides $200,000 in management and maintenance services of the theater to the City of New Bedford. The Z subsidizes its resident companies (NB Symphony and NB Festival Theatre) and community groups through minimal rental fees (direct cost) and in-kind services.

Revitalization. The Z has a $3,330,547 economic impact on New Bedford and on any given week brings thousands of people to the city, many for the first time. 110,000 people pass through The Z’s doors each year.

The Z’s mission is to provide New Bedford and the region with performing arts programming of excellence that inspires, educates, engages and entertains. We seek to bring the community together in shared experience and imbue everything we do with positive energy. We believe a performing arts center has the ability to galvanize and transform a community and are committed to serving as a catalyst that energizes the city and the region.
