  • The Translator and The Chaser of All Things is an essay that I wrote which summarized my design

experience and philosophy. Each part is intended to communicate a message on its own, but will This

portfolio may seem unconventional, as it was written to be appreciated by designers and non designers

    alike.

    WELCOME

    Me

(AN) Interior Designer (IN TRAINING)(A[N])(OCCASIONAL) Craftsman (BY TRADITION)

(A)(PART TIME) Fine Artist(A[N]) (INFORMALLY TRAINED) Photographer

While I claim interior design as my profession, my drive steers me towards expe-rience in a variety of things. I dont personally identify myself very often but I think that the following is a list of titles and subtitles that I find appropriate for my skill set:

I take any opportunity possible in order to learn. Not only do I love to learn, buttaking in this variety of experience seems to only make each specialty stronger through understanding their relationships that every medium can be broken down to simple, key elements and principles.

    The illustrative render-

ings of this project were execut-

    ed through compositing digitally

    enhanced hand-rendered objects

    with purely digital elements. It

was my first experience with this

    rendering technique and I still

often find it the best method of

    balancing quality with schedule.

I often use fine art mediums less comon in interor design when rendering by hand, such as the use of black and white charcoal seen here.

The Translator & The Chaser of All Things // Part 1

A NOTE ON PHOTOGRAPHY: Photography is becoming somewhat of a lost art. I dont see too much

harm in it, but people now get to take photos effortlessly and can document so much more. There is

still such value in a good photo that is now underappreciated. A well exposed photo holds a quality of

timelessness that is perhaps being lost. But why take the time to dial in focus and exposure settings

when you can manipulate the image so easily afterwards? Taking a good image is an investment.

Time spent composing and executing a shot always seems to yield a return regardless of its purpose.

THE TRANSLATOR & THE CHASER OF ALL THINGS

    .Part (1) One.

I dont have a good short answer when asked why I chose to pursue interior design. Well, when I was 10 I had a concept to redecorate my bedroom in all denim, and maybe that was it might be the best concise answer I can conjure without lying. I spent time doing many things growing up,

such as skateboarding, writing, following music, photography, spanish, jewelry, reading ceramics,

carpentry, and basic mechanics. Theresimplywas never any one thing that could

capture my interest long enough to prevent me from chasing something else for awhile, at least.

1000 sq. ft. Residence // Construction Documents // Elevation // South

What struck me as perhaps as most fascinating during 2D Presentation drawing develop-ment was the process of trans-ferring geometric information from a floor plan to an elevation simply by projective vertical lines. I was overwhelmed by the general simplicity of the solution that seemed so obvious, simple, and powerful.

1000 sq. ft. Residence // Construction Documents // Cabinet Details

One aspect of design and architecture that I cherish is the endless opportunity for research. You can study night and day and memorize any number of standards in attempt to be prepared, but will ultimately be seeking out new information sooner or later.

I stretch my own research abilities in order to draft construction documents accur-ately, but there usually ends up still being an enjoyable chance to learn through revision from professors, architects, and fabricators.

Fine Art // Personal // Multimedia Illustration & Digital Photography

I did not start regulary practicing fine art until a few years ago. It is an enter-taining outlet. It isnt something that I have to take myself very seriously with, and the ability to create without purpose or reason creates a un ique growth .

The Translator & The Chaser of All Things // Part 2

THE TRANSLATOR & THE CHASER OF ALL THINGS

    .Part (2) Two.

My wandering interests remaind constant throughout childhood. I attended University for a year and a half and took a 9 month leave which led me to question my current career/education path of Spanish. I researched and analyzed, creating endless comparisons between the possibilities. I ha d n eve r consid-ered interior design, but it intrigued me. Why? I still did not have an answer that I understood. As I write this I realize that it was perhaps just that; that I was intrigued asopposed to just interested. If I had to iden-tify the spark, it would be the moment when I saw it as not just creative, but the creation of the interior habitats in which todays humans spend most of their lives.

    314 SUBTLY SCULPURAL BLOCKS

aCad & Revit // 3D Modeling & Digital Rendering // Louis Kahns Salk Institute in Lego

OBJECTIVE: Create a workable lego set of a famous piece of architecture using any resources that you can find.

To this day I cannot forget the first time I saw a photo of the central, outlooking vista of Louis Kahns Salk Institute in San Diego. There is something about the fairly modest materials combined with the simple design elements that resonates with me. Using a somewhat vague floor plan and Google Earth, I mapped out the facility and configured proportions in a configuration most cohesive with standard lego blocks. Through Autocad planning, I created the majority of the mod-el with typical blocks, and created several custom blocks for the landscape and facade.

A particular type of motorcycle known as cafe racers that ac-tually developed around cafe culture. In the mid 20th century purist riders would strip down their bikes to the essentials to in-crease performance and spend days off racing from a cafe in one town to another, stopping for the black caffeinated nectar and a good laugh. It only seems natural that the two are now found combined.

Fellroy was a product of a daltile student competi-tion. The requirements were to find an existing space and create a renovation proposal using at least 3 Daltile products.

Frontman of Panthermilk, a group quickly gaining popularity, approached me and asked if I would design a release announcement for Totem, their most recent album. I had been following him as an artist for over a year and was especially excited as I had also been playing in a band for the first time. I should have expected it, but I was not prepared for the level of personal connection to the product involved. In the end I enjoyed and appreciated the experience of such intensive revision on such a personal, informal format.

THE TRANSLATOR & THE CHASER OF ALL THINGS

    .Part (3) Three.

My second year in the program was when I started to realize what I was capable of. I started to conceptualize in a way that I neger had. The primary project of the year was to design both the architecture and interior of a residence for myself based on a concept of my choice. I struggled to find means of charting progress as my process seemed to be so different than that of my class-mates who generally chose to abstract tangible objects. After travelling alone to Canada on my motorcycle the preceding summer I found a certain wonder that comes from trekking through new territory in such an open way, especially in the mountains. From this I developed the concept: The Relationship between The Mountain & The Road. Not the Moun-tain. Not the road. The Relationship. I still remember the looks I received as I tried to verbalize it in presentations during early phases of the process. My classmates were quickly trans-ferring their sketches to buildings as I was still developing form and I became anxious. It eventually seemed to hap-pen when I forced myself to temporarily forget that the final product was to be a home and give myself the freedom to ideate as if it was fine art. Then, one day, there it was, right in front of me.

What makes someone feel rejuvinat-ed? It is natural to for the body to feel rested during relaxation, but some find it something boring. My concept was mystery. This word is often inter-preted as scary, unsure, or unpredict-able. These can be the realities of lifel I dont deny the fear associated with the

mysteries of life. I find these to be the experiences that show me the beauty of life that prepares me to move for-ward. My goal was to create an expe-rience that dances the line between unfamiliar intrigue and welcome, mak-ing the business something that would surely be talked about.

THE TRANSLATOR & THE CHASER OF ALL THINGS

    .Part (4) Four.

    (continued)

This ability of creating that I learned was something that counfounded me for time to come. There sometimes seemed to be little logic behind it. I think that I began to explore the logic the most during my third year of University. Increasingly challeng-ing commercial projects required more in-tensive research, programming, and expla-nation. It seemed as if I had found another variable of an equation. (continued below)

Is design an art? process? business? science? I once had a professor who taught that you really dont under-stand what something is until you can define it in a sin-gle sentence. I dont care to use that as a universal rule, but I have found that it invokes interesting thoughts. The single word embodiement of the design process that I find most suiting is translation . A proper translation in-cluded emotional and factual understanding of cultural, dialectical, geographical, and situational elements in order

to express something from set of contextual factors to an-other. Design is the same. To communicate a thought, emotion, function, or lifestyle we must first understand the concrete and abstract properties and transfer them from one con-text to another. This is a delicate balance between fine art and science is constantly being sought after, identified, and calibrated.

    Work Experience

Spending a summer designing IKEA kitchens doesnt entail the glamour that many associate with the interior design profession. Regardless of whether or not this stereotype is accurate, it taught me that my professors warnings of the actu-al design phase being but a fraction of a project were understated.

The amout of growth during my time with Prows De-velopment pushed my understanding immensely.I worked with 3-4 new clients each week in their homes designing IKEA kitchens and performing any other de-tail needed to coordinate their order and installation. The most crucial thing that I learned in my time was to never make assumptions, especially during early contact with clients. I learned that the most effec-tive way to design a kitchen in four hours is usually to spend at least the full first hour listening, clarifying, and observing.

By the end of the summer I had field measured 60+ interiors, worked with architects, contractors, installa-tion crews, other designers, and clients of many types.

    .Part (5) Five.

With these thoughts in mind, I had still yet to really find any signifiers to briefly explain how I arrived at interior design. Then one day as I was rummaging through memoirs I stumbled upon my public school records. After spending some time with the nostalgia I noticed a pattern. While my scores in most areas varied at least a little bit from year to year, my scores in sections of spatial understanding and geometry remained above average.

I wont claim to be a human behavioral pattern expert, but maybe I really did always have a grasp on it and it just took me twenty one years to commit my time to a single creative path. It seems to make sense in my breadth of interest and that it is a fiel full of Jacks and Janes of All Trades.

It took time to take it all in and pick it apart, but interior design continues to fullfill me and has enriched my other creative abilities as I have learned how to translate between different mediums that I have known over the years. This is the second side of me.

The Translator & The Chaser of All Things is but a name that I created to tell this story. It is not a title that I wish to claim or go by. It is, quite simply, a story.
