It was an exciting Fourth of July celebration for a group of young Slovak immigrant men who gath-ered in Passaic, NJ on July 4, 1905. On that day, the 46 founders decided to organize an athletic fraternity for Catholics of Slovak ancestry. On July Fourth 110 years ago, the Slovak Catholic Sokol was founded. Our organization continues to be headquartered in the city of Passaic, NJ. From the ideas and determination of those hearty young Slovaks, all of whom were from the re-gion of Spis in Slovakia, our organization has grown and developed over the years to be known as “Amer-ica’s Greatest Slovak Gymnastic and Athletic Frater-nity.”

As a fraternal benefit society, the Slovak Catho-lic Sokol provides a variety of insurance plans for every member of the family. Financial security coupled with an extensive gymnastic and athletic program for every member of the family, has seen the organization grow from the original 46 founders to a great family of more than 29,000 members in all parts of the United States and Canada. A total of 93 Assemblies and Wreaths may be found in many parts of the East and Midwest United States and in the Province of Ontario, Canada. The local lodges are part of the organi- zation’s 19 Groups or Districts.

The biennial International gym-nastic, track and field meet or “Slet”, as it is known in Slovak, is the culmination of hard work, skill and preparation on the part of the young people from ages 8 and up. The first Slet was held in Wilkes-Barre, PA in 1912. Since then, the Slets have at tracted thousands of members of the organization who gather to compete in an array of track and field events. These Slets are held every two years in various American or Canadian cities.

In addition to our Slets, the Slovak Catholic Sokol hosts annual bowling, golf, basketball, volley-ball and softball tournaments which attract thousands of members annually. Besides the international compe-titions, district-wide tournaments are also held to pro-mote sportsmanship and camaraderie.

With a strong commitment to its youth, the or-ganization encourages and promotes higher education among the members. Annually, 38 scholarship grants totalling $43,500 are awarded to college-bound mem-bers. Annual $500 scholarship grants are also given to qualified members who are attending a Catholic High

School as well as $250 grants to those attending a Cath-olic grammar school. To date, a total of 2,125 members have received a total of over $1,475,000 in scholarship grants.

Furthermore, as a Catholic organization, support is given to various works of charity and benevolence. Active participation in parish life is encouraged and support for religious communities of men and women of Slovak heritage is given. Since the fall of commu-nism in Slovakia, the land of our ancestors, financial support has been given to the Catholic bishops there. Support for the work of the Slovak Catholic Federation is encouraged among the members.

As an organization with pride in its Slovak roots, we encourage a love for and a greater apprecia-tion of our Slovak history and traditions. Support for the work of the Slovak League of America, a civic and cul-

tural federation of Americans of Slovak an-cestry, and other Slovak cultural groups

is encouraged.

A review of the extensive ath-letic program, the promotion of our Catholic faith traditions and love for our Slovak heritage is re-

flected in the official publication of our organization, the Slovak Catholic

Falcon, which has been published since 1911. The tabloid offers the membership

a review of the activities of the organization in both the English and Slovak languages.

As a fraternal, the organization lends its as-sistance to a host of other works of charity. Together with four Slovak fraternals, the Slovak Catholic Sokol established the Slovak Foundation at the University of Pittsburgh and has assisted such national causes as the Habitat for Humanity program and Jubilee Ministries.

With a total of $210 million of insurance in force and with assets of more than $77 million, the Slo-vak Catholic Sokol is among the leading fraternal ben-efit organizations in the United States. Committed to the democratic way of life, a quadrennial national con-vention is held in which the representatives of the local Sokol lodges elect the Board of Directors which gov-ern the organization between conventions. In addition, other individuals are chosen to serve as members of the Supreme Assembly. The Board of Directors, Supreme Auditors and members of the Supreme Physical Fitness Board form the Supreme Assembly.

Dear Sokols and Sokolky:

Pochvalen bud’ Pan Jezis Kristus!

It is with great joy that I am aff orded this opportunity to greet all our members and friends

through this “2015 Annual Review Book”. Th is annual review book highlights our organization’s suc-

cessful fraternal programs and involvement in the life of the Slovak American and Canadian commu-

nities, as well as our strong ties to the Republic of Slovakia. Looking through the pages of this review

book one can’t help but marvel at the outstanding fraternal benefi ts aff orded to our membership, truly

making the Slovak Catholic Sokol the envy of our brother and sister Slovak fraternal societies.

Like so many of you, this past year aff orded me the opportunity to rekindle many acquaintances

and meeting others for the fi rst time. I was appointed by the Board of Directors to serve as a chaperone

for the 47th International Slet, held at Slippery Rock University. One thing I quickly realized however,

is that I am not 21 anymore. I enjoyed the opportunity aff orded to me to not only celebrate Mass for

both the opening and closing ceremonies of the Slet but also to provide a Spiritual presence through-

out the entire Slet. All participants were winners in my estimation. I was able as well to provide Mass

for this year’s 60th Annual Golf Tournament which was held in Barnsville, PA.

Permit me to thank the delegates to our 32nd Quadrennial Convention held in Pittsburgh, PA

for rescinding the term limit restriction in our by-laws regarding the Supreme Chaplain, which aff orded

me to seek the offi ce of Supreme Chaplain for another four year term.

Remaining the same however is the fact that the Slovak Catholic Sokol is a Catholic Fraternal,

which maintains a strong sense of loyalty to the Roman Catholic Church and to our Holy Father. Th is

rich religious heritage is clearly refl ected during all of our fraternal gatherings. I thank my brother

priests, those group chaplains who have off ered the Holy Sacrifi ce of the Mass, to fulfi ll the Sunday

obligation, during these scheduled fraternal gatherings.

I ask all to join with me and pray that as the Slovak Catholic Sokol enters its 111th year we all

commit ourselves to do our part to live our organization’s slogan, “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body”, and

we defend our organization’s motto, “For God and Nation.”

We can all be very proud of our impressive past, may we commit ourselves to assuring a promis-

ing tomorrow.

ZDAR BOH!

S L O VA K C A T H O L I C S O K O L

Dear Sokol Members and Friends:

It is hard to believe that our very exciting and active 110th Anniversary year of 2015 is now a part of history. We

are proud and pleased to make available this very interesting and colorful Review Book of our Slovak Catholic Sokol

fraternal activities as a remembrance of the many fraternal events and programs in which our membership attended and

participated. I hope that you enjoy reviewing these pages and perhaps you will see yourself, a family member or a friend

who took part in a fraternal activity hosted by our organization in 2015.

Certainly one of the highlights during our 110th Anniversary year was the organization’s 32nd Quadrennial Con-

vention in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A convention in the life of a fraternal such as ours is a very important activity be-

cause it demonstrates the highest form of the democratic process which is the hallmark of a fraternal benefi t society. Th e

decisions of our convention delegates will guide our activities for the coming four years. We have a good number of new

supreme offi cers who we welcome and to our veteran fraternalists and past supreme offi cers I off er my special thanks for

your fraternal eff orts and continued support during my time as Supreme Secretary. Congratulations and best wishes to

the newly elected Board of Directors.

As we welcome the new year of 2016, I hope that more of our members will make a resolution to participate in the

wonderful fraternal activities which our organization will sponsor in the future. Th e Slovak Catholic Sokol off ers various

sporting activities and other programs for every member of the family to enjoy.

I hope that each of you will renew your interest in the work of our organization by seeing that every member of

your family is our member. We have so many wonderful benefi ts which only a fraternal such as ours can provide. Aft er

enjoying this Review Book, why not share it with a friend, and perhaps in that way, he or she will consider joining our great

organization.

Finally, thank you to all who had a hand in the preparation of this colorful Review Book, you did an outstanding

job! I would also like to take this opportunity to extend to all of our members and friends my warmest wishes for a year

fi lled with God’s blessings of good health and happiness as we look forward to our 111th year of fraternal service and ac-

tivity. Th ank you to the Slovak Catholic Sokol and Zdar Boh!

Fraternally yours,

A Message from the

Supreme Sports Director

Dear Sokols and Sokolky:

As your Supreme Sports Director it is my pleasure to address you in the “2015 Slovak Catholic Sokol

Review Book”.

A key component to any successful organization is its membership and as evidenced in this year in re-

view, ours is second to none. It is the support of our members that allows us to continue to provide the fraternal

benefi ts and activities highlighted in this book.

Each year brings new challenges by way of creating new and exciting ideas to increase both member-

ship and participation in our sporting events. Once again, we hope you agree that we have been successful in

working together to improve upon our current activities. Whether it is our bowling, golf, and soft ball tourna-

ments or the Biennial Slet showcasing the youth of our organization, fraternalism is at the forefront of each

event. It has been my pleasure over the years to serve as your Sports Director for these various activities.

I am fortunate to have a staff comprised of incredible individuals who continue to go out of their way

to assist me in ensuring the success of our events. I cannot say thank you enough to my staff for working hard

and always being supportive. A special thank to my assistant Jim Matlon for his help and support throughout

the year.

I wish to extend a special thank you to our Supreme President Larry Glugosh for his continued lead-

ership and guidance. In turn, I would like to also thank our Supreme Secretary Steven M. Pogorelec and the

Supreme Assembly for their support, guidance and fi nancial assistance for our various programs.

I am thankful for my beautiful wife Janice and my wonderful children, Joe, Ben and Katie who con-

tinue to grant me patience and understanding as I perform my duties as the Supreme Sports Director. I also

extend a big thank you to my parents Cliff and Veronica for always encouraging me. Although my mother-in-

law Sophie Macurak, is no longer with us, her dedication to the success of the Slovak Catholic Sokol will forever

be a beacon as I go onto the next chapter with our organization.
