What is Z-Wave?

Largest ecosystem of Interoperable Home Control Products in the marketplace

– over 300 certified products with 40-50 new certifications per quarter

Presence in ALL major channels –retail, service provider, security, CEDIA integrator

Lightweight protocol, robust, reliable, self healing, low latency, mesh network technology

Z-Wave Relevance For Smart Metering

Z-Wave lets utilities communicate with home systems directly– A simple, robust, market-proven communications protocol

Z-Wave allows secure connections between consumers and utilities– Dynamic, scalable, three-tier security similar to electronic banking

Z-Wave already encompasses a wide range of sub-systems– Lighting, thermostats, receptacles, power strips, gateways, etc.

Z-Wave is already a broadly deployed ecosystem– Hundreds of interoperable products already in the field– Multiple channels; retail, professional install, DIY customers– Utilities don’t have to go into the hardware business

Z-Wave’s market footprint

Z-Wave is adopted by market leaders in every home control sector– Leviton, Wayne-Dalton, Cooper Wiring, Danfoss, Schlage, Golden

Power, RCS, Nokia, Kamstrup, Horstmann, Trane and Radio Thermostat Company of America to name just a few

Z-Wave is interoperable and brand agnostic– Products work together regardless of manufacturer– New Z-Wave products are backward compatible with older ones

The Enabling Link Between Utilities and Consumers

Z-Wave is designed specifically for control and monitoring– No interference from Wi-Fi or other household wireless devices– Low energy draw; even works with battery-operated devices

Z-Wave standard means future-proof technology investment– Interoperable, backward compatible products ensure viability– Long term technology commitments from market leaders

Z-Wave product base means rapid smart metering deployment– Products and consumer awareness are here now– Other technologies could take 5-7 years to reach market maturity

Smart metering – what are we talking about?

Goals:– Reducing Carbon footprint– Maximizing utilities’ efficiencies

• Not building more energy generating capacity than truly needed

Applications:– Using an e-meter for communicating its dials back to the utility– Giving consumers an overview about their total current energy

consumption on a display• To trigger consumers to change their energy usage at that point

– Expected 6 month impact of 15% reduction then dropping to 5%

– Tools that enable consumers to manage their consumption more intelligently without a need for constant utility co intervention

– A trigger from the utility to reduce energy or higher tariff with the result of an automated lower energy consumption in the home• Load shedding / peak shaving really justify the roll out of smart meters

Why Z-Wave for Smart Metering?

The Z-Wave ecosystem lets devices measure and report power consumption

Z-Wave eco-system (HAN) allows utilities to go from smart displays all the way through load shedding and peak paring

The Z-Wave technology brings the ecosystem of managed devices to the meter rather than putting any other HAN technology in the meter hoping that eventually there might be products out there

The Z-Wave Advanced Energy Control (AEC) platform provides the framework to:– Control the use of energy from home devices or systems– Optimize and reduce cost– Respond to overall demand– React to emergency situations in energy supply– Provide secure communications for simple to advanced metering

Z-Wave in Modstroem Smart Meter Application

Read any existing meter remotely.

A miniature scanner, mounted on the meter provides a readout at predefined periods (from 15 minutes to 1 week).

Scanner is powered from the Z-Wave MeterCam interface (battery driven, ~5years life time).

Picture, and identification data, is transferred via Z/IP-wave gateway a to the service supplier for OCR and billing.

Z-Wave for Smart Metering

Z-Wave = The only interoperable market success for wireless HAN– Established in the market, 300 products, 200 companies, all

relevant channels, many applications, all INTEROPERABLE

Z-Wave for smart metering HAN can be easily tied to other last mile solutions via bridge architecture, as well as integrated to IP via Z/IP– Modstrom, Horstmann and Trilliant products / examples / demo’s

Z-Wave’s ecosystem (HVAC & lighting) can be greatly leveraged for energy display– Any Z-Wave thermostat can double duty as an energy display and

reduce utility’s investments on the display roll-out

Z-Wave is being opened up through collaboration with Cisco in the Z-Wave alliance and the convergence with IP in Z/IP

Z-Wave has a new full device class for smart metering

Z-Wave is the obvious solution for smart metering in the home!

Z-Wave in Modstroem Smart Meter Application

The concept behind the product is to be able to read any existing meter remotely.

For this purpose, a miniature scanner, mounted on the meter Provides the readout at predefined periods (from 15 minutes to 1 week). The scanner is powered from the MeterCam interface (battery driven, ~5years life time).

The picture, together with some identification data, is transferred via Z/IP-wave gateway (can also function as a 2 port switch, if the owner has no router) and to the service supplier for OCR and billing.

The MeterCam Interface is built around the Zenys ZM3102 module.
