What a month for Yuma Elks #476. The month started off with celebrating all Mother’s with a symbolic Mother’s Day Celebration performed by our Lodge Officers. The meal prepared by our kitchen staff was amazing. People are still talking about the spaghetti sauce. Thanks to our staff and the chaplain, Lori Arney, for organizing our Mother’s Day. It was enjoyed by all that attended. Following Mother’s Day, our Ritual Team was cleaning up their presentation of ritual for the State Ritual contest held the following weekend in Tempe, AZ. We all arrived by Thursday for our 2p.m. practice. As always, it was a 30 min. practice that doesn’t ever run as smooth as practiced. Ha!.All those who have performed ritual know what I mean. Needless to say, it did not affect us one little bit. We performed on Friday at 10a.m. After our performance, we left the room wondering how we did, but trust me when I say, we left it all on the floor, well, except for 27 words, and it was left up to the judges. We had done all we could do to get the team to Indianapolis, Indiana. Some of us stayed behind to watch another performance, some of us went to have a post performance beverage, and another went to have some cheese and crackers with their wine. We then went over to the Tempe Lodge for lunch where they had some amazing cheeseburgers, cheese, and wine. We left there to go get prepared for the banquet dinner. Our Gentleman were dressed in their white jackets and the ladies were looking amazing in their chosen attire. We heard speeches from the Grand Exalted Ruler, AEA State President, and finally the State Ritual Chairman, our own Pat Riley. The one thing that really stood out was Pat saying, not once, but twice, “I made a choice to have all the state winners remain up front after they receive their award, I made this choice long before tonight.”.It started off slow with the Candidate from Show Low winning, but then the flood gates opened. State Inner Guard Lori Arney w/ hug from Gary, State Chaplain Melvin Tynan w/ emotional hug from Gary, State Esquire and Most Impressive Esquire Lonny Cline w/ very tearful hug from Gary, State Lecturing Knight John Kennel w/ more tearful hug from Gary, State Loyal Knight Joan Benno w/ even more tearful hug from Gary, State Leading Knight Chad Jones w/ totally composed Gary knowing we were going to Nationals. Although the State ER went to Show Low, the Most Impressive ER went to our own Gary Gist. Needless to say, we rocked it in Tempe. P.S. Your ROASTING is officially over!!! HAHAHAHA!!! The next morning tapped off an amazing weekend. Our own Jack Lawrence and his beautiful wife Marianne, became the AEA State President and First Lady for the year 2015-2016, as well as, our own Gary Gist inducted as the Sergeant of Arms. All those that

ELK OF THE YEAR

LEADING KNIGHT We have had a fun and busy month; it started with the Kentucky Derby, Mother’s Day program and lunch, Arizona Elks Conference in Tempe, and finished with the Scholarship Luncheon and presentation. It doesn’t end there as you may have heard the Ritual Team is very busy practicing for the upcoming Elks Grand Lodge National Convention, we will also be doing fundraisers for the next month to help with the traveling expenses to Indianapolis, so please keep your eyes open for up and coming events and Thank you for supporting your Yuma’s Ritual Team. On June 6th and 7th we will be having our Annual Golf Tournament. June 14th will be our Flag Day Ceremony this is open to members, family and friends please come and show your patriotism to our flag. June 21st the Auxiliary will be having a lunch for Father’s Day, and on June 27th we will be having a dinner to honor Jack Lawrence our Arizona Elks Association President and his wife Marianne. I would also like to thank Sandy Ramos for a great job she has been doing on the Dust.

See you at the Lodge.Joan Benno Leading Knight

attended had a blast celebrating President Lawrence’s induction. We entered the room to ZZ Top’s “Sharp Dressed Man” carrying signs, throwing candy/beads, ringing bells, blowing horns, and throwing out purple bracelets. Everybody in attendance knew we, Yuma Elks 476, were in the house and that Lodge President Lawrence was a residing member. The Pres. and First Lady were enjoying every moment!!! Mark your calendars, as the Lodge will be having an Inaugural Party June 27th. On Sunday, following State, luncheon was held by our PER Association and the Ladies Auxiliary for the Lodge Scholarship winners. All ten recipients who received scholarships from our lodge were present. They brought along family members to partake in this ceremony. Having the banquet on Sunday meant we did not have to compete with any of the high school proms. I want to thank all the PER’s who attended as well as the Ritual Team, and other Lodge members. We really showed how important our Scholarship program is at our Lodge. Of course, a special thanks to our Scholarship Chairman Pat Riley, John Kennel, and Anne Heather Welch from the Ladies Auxiliary who work tirelessly to pick out these exceptional scholarship winners. Although I could rest for the next few weeks to recuperate from this weekend, our work is just beginning. Our team is on their way to Nationals and funds for flights, hotel, and food need to be raised. Our PER association is stepping up and we will be having spaghetti night EVERY Monday night, starting June 2nd. We will be holding other functions through out the month. So please, pay attention what is going on at the Lodge, stay caught up as I will be posting all the activities going on at the Lodge on Facebook, and come out in support of your 2015 AEA State Ritual Team. . . YUMA 476!!!.

Respectfully Yours,Chad

Past Elk of the Year John Phipps presented Raleigh McIlvenna, on the right, with his certificate as the newest Yuma 476 Elk of the Year. Raleigh donated his time and effort in helping for several years in such programs such as our annual Christmas Food Baskets and the Children’s Shopping Spree. Most significant was the many days and weeks that he volunteered his expertise in the construction of the new Lodge. CONGRATULATIONS RALEIGH

A NOTE FROMMEMBERSHIPSECRETARY:

Here it is June already and I’m NOT ready for it to be summer yet. I would like to thank everyone for being so patient while they were paying their dues; it enabled our office to get their cards out on time. My office could not have done it without the help of Sheri Merrill and Kathy Foster, who worked tirelessly to get the job done. With the new Key Card System all those who have not yet paid their dues, their key cards have been deactivated. Once you pay your dues your cards will be activated again for another year. Any widows who have purchased key cards and have not picked up your new membership identification cards will also be deactivated until they come in and pick up their new 2015-2016 card. There is no charge for your widows card so please come in and pick them up, or call us and we will mail them out to you. Our membership has been growing by leaps and bounds. We have been initiating new members every month along with adding new members who have recently transferred to our Lodge. We welcome each and every one of you, and if anyone needs anything please stop by our office and we’ll be glad to help you.

Sincerely,Kimi FritzMembership Secretary

HAPPENINGS AT THE ELKS

The Elks National Foundation has announced that Yuma Lodge 476 took 1st place in per capita donations for Lodges with membership over 1500. Thanks to the generosity of our members we also were 4th in total donations out of 1957 Lodges. Our level of giving will be returned in the form of ENF grants back to the community. The hard work of the ENF committee under the stewardship of Esteemed Loyal Knight Joan Benno deserves a great big thank you. Past Exalted Ruler Fred Dammeyer was presented with a plaque commemorating his reaching the Elks National Foundation Bronze level for having donated $5000.00 or more to the Foundation. Pictured at right is ER Chad Jones, Fred, and Leading Knight Joan Benno.

A Celebration in honor of the Mother's, past and present…Mother’s Day May 10, 2015 at Yuma Elks 476

THE BIG RACE May 2, 2015 was Kentucky Derby Day. There was a small gathering here at the Lodge to celebrate the event. A few of the regulars brought in some deviled eggs, chips, Nacho cheese dip and chili for the famous Saturday Elks hot dogs. Fresh picked mint (thank you Tish Roman) for our Mint Julips and other spirits to toast all the beautiful horses at the starting gates when the race went off with a BANG!

Our ladies went all out with the tradition of wearing Big, Beautiful and Stunning Hats for the special occasion. In my opinion I would say the BIG WINNERS of the DAY were at the Elks Lodge having a Grand time in Yuma.

NEWS FROMTHE

AUXILIARYSalutations! I hope everyone is enjoying the gorgeous weather we have been experiencing these past few weeks (it’s only a “teaser” for what is coming). We were again honored by the presence of our Esteemed Exalted Ruler, Chad Jones, who brought us up-to-date on the Lodge activities. The Lodge presented a wonderful Mother’s Day celebration on May 10, with sentimental readings by various Lodge Officers, and a delicious pasta buffet. Thanks to all of you who worked so hard to honor our mothers. The Scholarship Awards luncheon took place on May 17. The recipients from the Lodge and Auxiliary were introduced and each presented a brief background of themselves and what their respective educational goals are. Ann-Heather Welch presented Jaime Montanez and Hannah Smith a $1,000 scholarship each from the Auxiliary. Ursula Gist created a beautifully decorated unique basket on behalf of the Auxiliary for this occasion, Thank you Ursula!! Chairlady Net Kuban and her committee are in the process of organizing the Father’s Day luncheon and celebration, which will be held on June 21 from 12:00-1:30 PM. We look forward to seeing many of our Elk fathers and their respective families at this event. Our organization donated $500 to the Lodge towards the installation of Jack Lawrence as State President, which took place in Tempe on May 16. Many of our members attended this prestigious ceremony. What an honor to have one of our outstanding officers selected for this position. Our final general meeting (before we “go dark” for the summer) will be on June 2 with a small party to follow. Please plan to attend if at all possible. Members celebrating birthdays over the summer are: June - Diana Wallauer (6/3), Joanne Snyder (6/5), Mary Sue Crye (6/8) July - Carolyn Miller (7/1), Lauren Hightower (7/8), Joeanne Bartlett (7/9), Sheri Merrill (7/11), Susan Mueller (7/16), Lois Culver (7/19), Karen Goudy (7/23), Margret Delintt (7/24), Jule Ann Fazz (7/25) August - Carol Hightower (8/3), Ursula Gist (8/6), Donnie Soukup (8/10), Sandra Virga (8/17), Sue Gibson (8/22), Bonnie Lecorchick (8/27), Sue Casey (8/30), Jan Hathaway (8/30), Anne-Heather Welch (8/31). Happy Birthday, and please join us for the Birthday Lunch Bunch on June 9 at 12:30 at the Lodge. We will reconvene after the summer break on September 1 with our usual “Welcome back” potluck. The Board will have its meeting on August 25 at 6:00 PM. I hope your summer is full of fun, adventure, and especially good health.
