The location

• The location has been highly contested by environmentalists and non-local residents in Las Vegas, which is over 100 miles (160 km) away. High levels of radioactive is still going on.

Why this happened

• Some thought the idea of using Yucca for a nuclear dump didn’t help Yucca Mountain's suitability as a nuclear waste repository stems largely from its very dry climate and deep water table for evaluating future climate and hydrologic conditions is to consider the worlds climate might even change

After nuclear disaster

• Damages could reach more than $20 billion by 2020 and up to $500 million, president Obama stopped it and reviewed it after a study commission and changed it to a long-term.

Yucca mountain

• In 1987, Congress amended the Nuclear Waste Policy Act, directing the Energy Department to exclusively study Nevada’s Yucca Mountain, a remote desert location. Then after the act In 1982, Congress passed the Nuclear Waste Policy Act directing the Department of Energy to build and operate a repository for used nuclear fuel and other high-level radioactive waste.
