Yu-Cheng Chou’s art focuses on the criticism of images in mass media or the mechanism that produces them. At this current time, digital images come into our sight all too easily, and how our perceptive experiences accept, reject or suspect the purpose of this production mechanism has become an issue, which Chou presents with his creations not in a straightforward or outright ironic manner, but in a poetic way. Sometimes only minor changes are made to the borrowed images and symbols, where the issue emerges by itself through the medium instead of being raised by an outside force. Video works created by Chou have long broken away from a defensive position that pop art takes against modernism or manipulation of images with a sacralizing approach. To Chou, these images surrounding us have become a modern landscape. Different from the natural landscape, the images/videos we receive and utilize gradually alter our experience of the world and our ideology. Therefore, his works can be considered a category of field work, through which he intends to indicate the rhythm or the structural principle underlying these images. The advancement of imaging technology means a revolution of visual experience, so as highly skillful in managing digital technology as Chou is, he tries to advance his creation into a virtual landscape. In his image/video works, the artist sometimes challenges our sensory experiences and sometimes hopes to awaken us to the truth. As to the display of his art, viewers are encouraged to notice how he transfers digital media to the exhibition venue, how he engrafts issues and attributes in his work, as well as how fine-tuning of time, light and sound is conducted in various exhibitions he takes part in. Considerations made on exhibition display are at the same time critical cores constructed by other pieces of his art. In terms of Chou’s train of thought on art, therefore, we cannot define him as a member of a generation that has doubts about the reality he resides in; on the contrary, Chou confronts the ever-changing Internet generation and strives to capture the contemporaneity of images/videos stored in our marginal memory.
