YSM Students’ Guide to Gigs & Community Lessons Thank you for your interest in YSM gig and community lessons opportunities. Please save this guide for future reference. How to subscribe Interested students should register using the online Gig List & Community Lessons Registration Form. Once you are registered, you will be added to email lists based on your registration responses. How the process works When a community member submits a gig or lesson request, relevant students receive a notification directly from Wufoo (the YSM form platform). If you are interested in a gig/lesson, you should directly contact the client via the contact information given in the notification. You may then proceed to communicate directly with the client. Please respond to gig and lesson requests in a timely manner, within one week of the original request. This is a professional courtesy we expect from our student performers. You may not be the only musician speaking with the client, and you are only hired if they say you are hired. The YSM Gig List & Community Lessons lists are an informal service for YSM students and are intended solely to connect students with community opportunities to perform and teach. The Yale School of Music does not issue contracts, nor is it responsible for contractual negotiations made between clients and musicians. Gigs Ensemble/group gigs: We strongly recommend assembling and confirming your ensemble before you respond to a client. Payment from a Yale department: If the client is from a Yale department and wants to pay you via Student Employment, they must set up the job and hire you and the other ensemble members themselves — this is not done by the School of Music. Community lessons In order to teach community lessons, you must be registered to teach lessons through the YSM Undergraduate/Secondary Lessons Program before the start of the fall term. Please note that current students who are not registered to teach undergraduate/secondary lessons may not register to teach community lessons. Also note that Yale School of Music facilities are not available for use during private lessons. You must use a non-YSM location to teach community lessons. Your responsibilities By signing up to receive Gig and Community Lesson notifications, you are agreeing to the following statements:

When working gigs or teaching lessons I hear about through YSM, I am acting as an independent musician and/or contractor and not as an employee of the Yale University. I am responsible for tracking and reporting my own earnings, and paying all applicable federal and state taxes. I am encouraged to contact a certified public accountant or other tax adviser if I have any concerns about tax calculations.

When working gigs or teaching lessons I hear about through YSM, I agree to uphold standards of conduct and professionalism befitting a YSM student musician at all times. They include: negotiating a fair rate of pay, being musically prepared for the gig/lesson, arriving and being ready to start on time, acting courteously and professionally in all aspects of the gig/lessons process, and finding a replacement musician should an emergency conflict arise.
