1 Dear Parent/Guardian It is an honour and privilege for me as Chair of Governors to present Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd’s Annual Report. Following the previous year’s glowing report by Estyn*, 2018/19 has been another highly successful year for the school. We were categorised as a Green school by Welsh Government and the local authority – the highest ranking - a ‘highly effective school’. The Governors therefore wish to record their appreciation of everyone who has contributed to the happy life of the school again this year. Our thanks go to the Headteacher, Mrs Sian Davies, and her Deputy Mr Darryn Green, all the teachers, teaching assistants, support staff and you parents/guardians. 2018/19 was another busy and memorable year for the school. There were many new and exciting celebrations and events. Some were unique and innovative, such as the Oscars, 'Hapus a Heini (‘Happy and active’), and the afternoon tea for parents and family. It was also a privilege for the school to compete on stage at the Millennium Centre at the Urdd National Eisteddfod in Cardiff this year. An unforgettable experience for everyone. Other events to remember were the school trip to see Wales playing Spain at the Principality Stadium (it was great to see the children and their parents singing and shouting!), a whole school trip to West Midland's Safari park and Year 5 and 6’s trip to London. There was also a wonderful Christmas concert, Urdd concerts, countless sporting achievements, gardening sessions, a grandparents' dinner and much more. I would like to thank all of those who volunteer to train and support the children across the whole spectrum, and the school for sharing the information through regular social media entries and the headteacher's monthly letters to parents. I would also like to thank friends of the school very much for raising £3000 during the year. Excellent. Sadly, increasing fiscal pressures on all schools mean that the work of friends of the school is now a vitally important part of school funding. We ask you to support them in everything they do. The breakfast and after-school clubs continue to be popular and successful. In addition, our wonderful facilities are used by other organisations outside school hours e.g. Activ8 during the holidays. We are constantly looking at other opportunities and new initiatives for the benefit of the school and the community around it. If you have any suggestions, please contact the school. Finally, I wish to thank the pupils for their enthusiasm, commitment and behaviour. I have personally witnessed all these virtues on numerous occasions and the school has also received praise from many individuals and organisations around the town and beyond. The pupils are a credit to the school. 150 of pupils attended the school in July 2018. The school has a headteacher, 7 full-time teachers, which includes the Deputy and 2 part-time professors, together with an efficient team of assistant teacher support groups of pupils and individuals. There is also an active team of staff who support the running of the school; Secretary, caretaker, cleaners, dinner attendants, Dinner money helper, Breakfast Club staff and after school club, and kitchen staff. Dear Parent/Guardian

It is an honour and privilege for me as Chair of Governors to present Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd’s Annual Report.

Pupils’ attendance

Year Attendance Authorised absence Unauthorised absence

2018-19 95.54% 4.4% 0.06%

Our target was 96.5% with the school attaining 95.54% which is very good. The % of each class is noted within a newsletter each half term. The school will contact parents/guardians where the level of attendance is low or inconsistent. Children who leave School at the end of Year 6: At the end of Year 6, pupils usually transfer to Ysgol Caereinion as part of the continuation of their Welsh medium education. Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd is part of the Caereinion cluster of schools. This year 7 pupils went to Caereinion, 10 pupils went to Llanidloes High School, 2 pupils went to Newtown High School, 3 pupils went to Bishop’s Castle Community College. The school impliments transition plans effectively. We wish all the best to those pupils who transferred in September. Building links between the School and the Community: The school makes a special effort to hold events throughout the year that benefit the children and the community. Year 5 and 6 pupils held a very successful 'Oscars Night' as they focused on all sorts of different aspects and presented to an audience. As a result of the successful Oscars Night, 4 children travelled down to Cardiff to compet in the ‘Enterprise Troopers’. A brilliant experience for all involved! Year 3 and 4 children had a very tasty afternoon tea and the parents were entertained with a number of different items such as singing and recitation. In addition, the Foundation Phase children decided to create a rich task of their own by holding a 'Happy and Active' evening for parents and the wider community. They created a special fitness DVD, tasty flapjacks and healthy juices. Fantastic evening! Once again this year a delicious lunch was held for parents and close family for the third year running. This year, like last year, we saw over 100 parents and close family fill their tummy and have the opportunity to chat with their children / grandchildren. The school has a very close link with the Cylch Meithrin and this year there were several activities and events together such as celebrating Sali Mali's 50th birthday. The school makes good use of local resources, including the Leisure Center, Theatr Hafren, Library, local shops, sports grounds and places of worship. The school has been on a number of educational visits - London and the West Midlands Safari and ‘Gwersyll yr Urdd’ in Cardiff to name a few. During the year, activities were organized to promote the understanding of fundraising for good causes e.g. Children in Need, A total of £ 440 was raised, over £ 300 was raised by wearing Christmas jumpers and carol singing and the money went to 'Dial a Ride'. We also have close links with Seren Hafren, Merched y Wawr and The Cilgaint Christian Centre. Parents/Guardians Meetings: Section 94 of the School Standards and Organisation (Wales) Act 2013, introduced important changes with regard to the Annual Parent/Governor meeting. As a result a school governing body is no longer required to hold an annual parents meeting. Parents are major stakeholders in the school community and have a clear and strong interest in their child’s education. It is therefore important that the governing body actively engages with parents and remain accountable, by providing them with information and opportunities to discuss and have an input into school. The School Standards and Organisation (Wales) Act 2013 now enables parents of registered pupils at the school to request up to three meetings per year with the governing body via a petition. A brief summary is provided below. The governing body must hold a meeting within 25 school days of receiving the petition, providing that:

1. the petition contains the signatures of the required minimum number of parents of registered pupils at the school, which is the lower of the following: (a) the parents of 10% of registered pupils, or (b) the parents of 30 registered pupils

2. the meeting requested by parents must be to discuss a matter relating to the school. 3. there will be no more than three meetings held during the year in which the first petition is received. 4. there are sufficient school days left in the school year for the meeting to be held.

Page 8: YSGOL DAFYDD LLWYD FULL ANNUAL REPORT …...1 Dear Parent/Guardian It is an honour and privilege for me as hair of Governors to present Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd [s Annual Report. Following

The meeting is open to all parents of registered pupils at the school, the headteacher and any other persons invited by the governing body. As soon as reasonably practicable, the governing body must notify all parents of registered pupils at the school in writing, the date of the meeting and the matter to be discussed. Further detailed information is provided on the statutory requirement for these meetings, petitions and the process for holding the meetings can be found in Welsh Government guidance onParents Meetings: statutory guidance to the governing bodies of maintained schools in Wales regarding the duty to hold meetings with parents. There has been no requests to hold a meeting of the Governing Body with the Parents in accordance with Section 94 of the School Standards and Organisation (Wales 2013) during the academic year 2018/19 Use of the building.

The School was used for three weekly ‘Welsh for Adult’ sessions throughout the year.

Each year, members of the school staff prepare pupils for the local, regional and National Eisteddfodau. Thanks to staff for their work and to parents for their continued support. Visit of Dafydd Iwan It was a pleasure and a privilege to welcome Mr Dafydd Iwan to school during the Summer term after KS2 studied the theme 'Right to Life' (‘Hawl i Fyw’). There was a very intensive session with Year 6 talking about his famous song 'Hawl i Fyw' followed by a feast of singing. Our doors were opened to the community and it was wonderful to welcome such an iconic singer to Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd. National Success – Urdd It’s not every day you win a medal in the ‘Poetry compeition’ in the Urdd Eisteddfod, however, this year, the school managed not one but TWO medals!
