March 13- Went to Town w i th Frank and t a l ked to B ro the r Robert about g i v i n g up the farm.

March 15- Fox began to chop down an Oak but the snow storm drove him o f f , the b ig t r e e t h e t had the 8wing.

March 16- Mary and I went to Augusta and s tayed o v e r n i g h t . Mrs . CAmpbel l ' s mind f a i l i n g a f t e r a long u s e f u l l i f e - s t a y e d to d inne r and saw 0. Campbel l 'a s t o c k . Paid Fox $5 f o r c h o p p i n g - k i l l e d the bunt ing buck.

March 17- Mrs. L, Mary and I r e tu rned a f t e r d i n n e r .

March 18- Spr ing l i k e end no fro8t-af ter months o f f r o s t . Co ld and snow at n i g h t - A l l a t Church but F rank .

March 19- Another snow storm-deep snow to wade through and the sheep l i k e to s t i c k i n the d r i f t s - t o o c o l d f o r the b i r d s to s ing o r the 3ay to scream. John Campbell came f o r Mrs. L a t n i g h t .

March 20- Frank went to work. B i r d s i n g i n g i n the c l e a r sunshine et Noon- Wrote "Going back to S c o t l a n d " .

March 21 - Zero at dawn-pure sunshine and a pure wor ld o f snow. Mary walked to Town i n the Snow.

March 23- Snow i n the f o r e n o o n . Paid Robert $5. Mary went w i t h Robert t o see the c l o s i n g o f the S c h o o l .

March 24- Mrs. L came-went t o Town w i t h her and walked home i n the mud and snow. I was so v e r y weary .

March 25- Eas te r Sabbath- 3 g i r l s and I went to the Ep iscopa l Church . I heard Mr. McClean, my o l d f r i e n d Mr. P o s t ' s k i n d l y w e l ­come and beaming face impressed me as w e l l as the Sermon.

March 26- John Campbell came and brought Mr. L. I drove w i th B e l l e to her School and brought up H a t t i e Stephensen. L Hardy helped Robert t o saw wood. R. Campbell came and thought the p i c t u r e f a the r p a i n t ­ed o f me i n boyhood looked l i k e Shakespeare.

March 27- A l i g h t f r o s t - R o b e r t sawing wood. Went w i t h Mrs. L to her f a t h e r ' s home and roads v e r y muddy. I t was sad to see Mrs. Campbell t h a t had done so much' good i n l i f e so much f a l l e n o f f i n mental Bbility - s t a y e d o v e r n i g h t .

March 2B- L e f t the o l d f r i e n d s and came home over some ve ry rough roads . Robert and Hardy sawed wood t i l l noon.

March 29- F r o s t as u s u a l - p l e a s a n t sunshine and b i r d s s ing ing at noon. Three went to Miss F l e t c h e r ' s f u n e r a l - P a i d Mrs. T u t t l e $10.

March 30- blent to D e t r o i t . C a l l e d on S i s t e r Agnes, B ro the r Frank & James blanlas the Poet , Wi l l i am Ada i r my o l d f r i e n d 4 Mother and S i s t e r s . Mother not v e r y w e l l o the rw ise I was s t rengthened by so much k indness and r e s p e c t .

March 31 - The l a s t o f M a r c h - f r o s t and the b i r d s s i n g i n g to usher i n the long wish f o r S p r i n g . Wife and I sa t to ge t our l i keness taken . Wal ter Dan and Kath ie Campbell came.

A p r i l 4- Wet l i k e - F o x d id not come-Robert and Hardy drew Manure from undsr the B a r n . Mary and I went to Town i n the wee wagon.

A p r i l 5- A wet d a y - I t h i nk i t s Uk years today s i nce we l e f t S c o t l a n d . 18 years i n Sco t land and i n America and i t seem as the 18 years i n Sco t land was the g r e a t e s t p a r t o f e x i s t a n c e . Received a paper from my o l d Schoolmate John F leming.

A p r i l 7- A l i t t l e more snow-heard o f death o f young Mr. Goodspeed-thsn the young people went to h i s funera l -more r o t t i n g apples which vexed u s .

December 24-Opened a Christmas box from Sister Agnas with presents and Mrs. L started over the snow early.

December 25-Christmas-Fifteen years since Father left all that is of earth earthly. If it was not for memory he would be to as if he had never been. Except for Belle we all went to Azro and Elizabeth's for dinner along with Mr. & Mrs. Frank Fletcher and William Campbell family. A pleasant meeting of rural friends.

December 26-Anna gave me a handkerchief, Mary a box of paper, Elizabeth a new day book, Mrs. L a pair of stockings on Christmas. Mrs. Lstarted for her Fathers. Frank and Robert who returned before dinner. Anna. Mary and Robert want to Town In the Cutter.

Miss E t h e l Hammond mho passed auiay A p r i l 17, 1986 uias a r e s i d e n t o f Auguata Township u n t i l she moved to the G i l b e r t Residence i n 1971. She had r e c e i v e d her A . B . Degree from Eas te rn Michigan U n i v e r s i t y i n 1931 and was a teacher i n the Hamtramack School be fore j o i n i n g the F a c u l t y o f the L i n c o l n Conso l i da ted Schoo l s . She was an a c t i v e member o f the Y p s i l a n t i E v a n g e l i c a l F r i ends Church and o f the Y p s i l a n t i Sen io r C i t i z e n s .

Mrs. Ruth Reynolds who paased away A p r i l 19, 19B6 was a l o y a l member o f the H i s t o r i c a l S o c i e t y , an accompl ished seamstress, and a c h e e r f u l f r i e n d . She came to the area from Plymouth, Ind iana where she had done mending o f c l o t hes i n the c o l l e c t i o n at the Museum t h e r e . She became i n v o l v e d i n the same a c t i v i t y h e r e , f o r as she sa id " I have the e x p e r t i s e " . Ue are g r a t e f u l to her f o r a l l o f the mending, r e f u r b i s h i n g and o r g a n i z i n g she d i d w i t h our c o l l e c t i o n o f d r e s s e s , c o a t s , b l o u s e s , e t c . Ruth w i l l be remembered, t o o , by a l l who shared her g rac ious h o s p i t a l i t y and her gourmet cook ing .

Mrs. Har ry (Anna) Smith was a Guide wh i le she r e s i d e d here and always mainta ined an a c t i v e i n t e r e s t i n our Museum. She passed away i n S t . P a u l , Minnesota i n Oune 1986. Anna marr ied D r . Har ry Smi th , F a c u l t y member at Eas te rn Michigan U n i v e r s i t y i n 1952, at which time she was i n the A r t Department Of the same U n i v e r s i t y . She end her husbsnd were g ree t t r a v e l e r s and shared t h e i r exper iences w i t h the H i s t o r i c a l S o c i e t y Members and o the r g roups .

Mrs. L l o y d ( R o s e ) Dlds passed away i n Laguna H i l l s , C a l i f o r n i a . She uas a graduate o f Eas te rn Michigan U n i v e r s i t y and as the w i fe o f L l o y d Olds uho uaa A t h l e t i c D i r e c t o r at Eas te rn Michigen U n i v e r s i t y f o r many e y a r s . Mr. Mar t in Dawson about whom t h i s l e t t e r i s addressed was the Grandfa ther o f John Dawaon who l i v e d on Grant S t r e e t . The p r o p e r t y i n ques t ion i s a t 213-215 W. Mich igan Avenue, where the Dawson Store waa. Mr. Mar t in B. S t a d t m i l l e r was the C i t y ' s M u n i c i p s l J u s t i c e and was the f a t h e r o f l o c a l c i t i z e n s , Mrs. Msrtha Walton and Mr. Bennett S t a d t m i l l e r . He was the f i r s t lawyer to ho ld the O f f i c e o f J u s t i c e o f Peace i n the C i t y , an O f f i c e he he ld f o r f ou r t een years u n t i l h i s unt imely death i n 1924.

In addition to the above we have also taken full, deeded P o s s e s s i o n of the Lewis House and f u r n i s h i n g s . I feel we have e s t a b l i s h e d a greater u n d e r s t a n d i n g with City Hall, this leading to much better c o o p e r a t i o n and assistance from the City.

All of these things have been accomplished with the help of many p e o p l e , whom I thank so very much. I also wish to thank the Membership for supporting my efforts during the past 3j y e a r s -without this support many of these listed items could not have been c o m p l e t e d .

We are happy to announce the three winners in our Cash Raffle held during the Ypsilanti Historical Festival.
