REVIVING KAMPONG PHLUK, A FLOATING COMMUNITY ON TONLE SAP LAKE

Location: Tonle Sap Lake, Cambodia
There are two times of a year when locals in Kampong Phluk migrate to the inner lake. One is during the fishing season and another one is during monsoon season when water level rises and floods most of the on-stilt houses.
They spend up to 6 months living on the water. By that time, the community is separated by their boats scattering on the lake, the strong community spirit which present in Kampong Phluk during dry season disappears when they migrate to the iner lake to sustain their life.
By considering how the villagers live on the land during dry season, a familar but more livable habitat is created on the lake, a completely different environment to live in.
The changing building patterns throughout Kampong Phluk
Kids in their unique and unusual stilt houses dangling their legs in the air, wooden boats tied up to one of the support stilts, and cheerful teenagers splashing water on a boat create a distinctive setting for Kampong Phluk. This proposal aims to revive and regain the community spirit that vanished when they migrate and live temporarily at the inner lake.
One of the few houses made completely of long wood, a thatched roof and a thatched wall in its most fundamental form. This house belongs to a fisherman.

Hiding behind the little grocery stall is the compact living area with large portion of the area dedicated for storing purpose.

At present, 65% of Kampong Phluk villagers migrate and settle at the inner lake during fishing season. Occassionally they bring fish catches back to Kampong Phluk for sun drying and fish processing.

THE BRIEF
Spending up to 6 months of a year on the lake, to revive the strong and vibrant neighbourhood spirit that vanishes when they migrate to the inner lake, an architectural response is made by creating a sustainable community hub which will gather the villagers together. It will revive the community spirit by sharing proper communal space for daily activities and trading opportunities. During dry or fishing season, it will be occupied by fisherman while families struggling to survive with flood water will move in during monsoon season. Decision to locate it on the water is back to their very original intention to dwell by the river and how much they rely on the water for livelihood. This proposal will better and improve the living quality of community in Kampong Phluk in both land-based and water-based living
environments.

The house grows by extending to where the river is situated for various purposes; any patch of land behind the house is may be converted to part of their homes.
Various opportunities are available to reassemble the platforms according to needs such as festival celebrations and wedding ceremonies. One of the most important spaces, a large community space can be formed with no gaps or obstacles. An open plan at ground level for the buildings is essential to make sure that people will be able to approach the buildings from any direction.

CONCLUSION
This socially relevant issue of migrating communities from Kampong Phluk alerted me when I first learnt about that issue. In fact, there are a lot more communities which are dealing with similar social issues. This thesis project brings me back to the very basic role of an architect which is to help better the lives of people by providing a better living environment. Besides that, dealing with an issue so relevant to our current situation around the globe, the issue of increasing water level, it worth an effort to take Kampong Phluk as the starting point in tackling this issue by really looking into their unique strategies living in this constantly changing environment. From there, there is then a potential to first introduce the resilient neighbourhood to neighbouring countries, such as Thailand and Vietnam, who are also living in
a similar environment, then to countries around the world.
HOUSING FOR AGING POPULATION

A small housing facility for elderly people was designed and then brought forward to critically engage with the questions addressing structural systems, construction materials and methods, building sustainability and human comfort. By first studying the declining abilities of the elderly such as memory weakness and difficulty to walk, then introduced solutions such
as minimizing way finding , memorable reference point, etc.

Design strategies
01. Avoid or minimise the rooms along the Parr Street as the garages, bars and studios cause noise. 02. Introduce greenery.
03. The proposal has to be secure as elderly is fragile, furthermore, the site itself is not elderly-friendly.
04. The pcornet point with nice views could be a location for communal room such as dining space, offices.
05. First of all, introduce greenery as the site and the surrounding areas lack of green space.
06. The pavement design is extended to the site to bring the community in which then creates a welcoming entrance.
07. The site is small and the form does not allow ample amount of daylight in. So, puch the first and second floors to maximise the use of site.
08. The 2m gap is to avoid the interior space to become too dark, it also allows residents to know what happens outside. It brings indiduality to the living units too.
Declining abilities of the elderly
Design considerations
From the street, the front units appear to be floating, this approach catches attention but also offers privacy to the to the users at the same time. Special attentions were given to the potential users, the elderly, such as minimizing wayfinding, memorable reference points, avoiding
cul-de-sacs, large scale and small scale of living environment.
Detailed section
CONCLUSION
Having spent a whole afternoon with elderlies at a care centre in Chester and listened to what they actually wanted in a home, I realized that designing for elderly was a lot more complicated than I thought. Their memory weakness, difficulty to walk, difficulty using hands are all the necessary things to be considered. Architecture is not just by the people, it is also for the people, they are the core in
every stage of this project.

THE MUSIC CENTRE: MUSIC AS A PIECE OF ART

This music centre is not treated as a building but a piece of art as what music is. The rather artistic approach has brought music from being something invisible to something possesses a physical form. The visibility of music is the sensory experience that one would like to have in a music venue. Music seems to be about feeling and
emotion, at its root it is rather mathematical but beautifully simple.
The Site
This project with the theme of a music venue is sited in Lincoln where the locale offers a unique setting of nature and surround-ings. The site location, with its significant architectural heritage, offers opportunities to speculate creative and imaginative design interventions. The music venue is expected to be the source of aspiration to the town of Lincoln and be the experience marker to the users.
Lincoln is built at the point where there is a gap in the Lincoln Cliff in height, also sometimes, called the ‘Lincoln(shire) Edge’ or ‘Lincoln Heath’. The River Witham flows through this gap. Lincoln is thus divided informally into two zones, known locally as uphill and downhill. The uphill area comprises the northern part of the city, on top of Lincoln Cliff. This area includes the historical quarter, including the cathedral, Lincoln Castle and the Medieval Bishop’s Palace. The site is located at this part of the city.

The existing green slope connecting the site with the castle wall offers an oppor-tunity to extend it to the site creating an outdoor performance space.
It is away from the residential to minimize the noise impact to the residents.
Appreciating the view to the castle wall by minimizing the height of the building.
The existing green slope appears to be a natural seating and resting area for the performance area. Therefore, the proposed building is open to the slope.

CONCLUSION
I did not treat this project as a building from the very beginning, but as a piece of art. To bring music from something invisible to a physical form, this proposal was derived from a sketch and a study model about what I think music is. The fabric wrapped around the dancing structure creates
a contrast between the chaotic interior space and mysterious exterior look.

METROPOLITAN TRANSIENT’S TENEMENT

transient [adjective]-lasting only for a short time; impermanent.
tenement [noun]-a room or a set of rooms forming a separate residence within a house or block of
apartments.
The cheapest transient accommodations in metropolitan cities, apart from youth hostels, are backpacker’s hotels. They are called backpacker’s accommodation because they are frequented by low budget travelers such as backpackers. These are travelers who carry on their backs their means of accommodation in the form of sleeping bags and tents which they would pitch during their stay in localities. An architecture was designed
for backpackers to be able to camp within metropolitan areas.
BRIEF
The backpackers experience the building as a temporary escape of excitement and adventure of urban camping without feeling alienated. By approaching this notion using chaotic structural expression to connect the backpackers with the urban features. The exposed steel structure arranged in chaotic fashion with no enclosure walls and with high emphasis on the vertical circulations and environmental factors plays an important role in alleviating the feeling of being
a transnational in an urban setting.
CONCLUSION
I have an interest in buildings with exposed structure; I call it ‘naked architecture’. In this project, I saw a perfect opportunity to challenge the limit of construction, engineering and structural design. The exposed steel structure, chaotic structural expression and little color touches of the tents will connect
the backpackers with the urban features. Three words to describe this project, BOLD, RAW, FUN!

A new planning strategy is needed for one of Liverpool’s most important inner-city sites, the Knowledge Quarter. In order to develop a visionary urban plan that addresses functional as well as socio-economic urban issues, our main theme is YOUNG BRITISH TALENT. A platform is essential for graduates to showcase their talent, for them to start their own business. Our main strategy is to retain as many buildings as possible.

A small and affordable space to rent for work, sell and live is what fresh graduates in Liverpool need to make a living from their hobbies and passions. Individual access to each floor is provided so that the property can be rented to talented students or individuals who need a place only to sell, to work or to live. The individual access also give more privacy to
living units and working studios located on first and second levels.

Being in a predominantly second handed society, it is most likely that we would have a binary personality. That means that there is one side of our personality which is based on how we would like to be seen or perceived by others, and one side which we would identify as the true us, which is not always a bad one. Much like the moon - the face of it that we see is the one that reflects light from the sun, while the other side that does not
get this light is the dark side of the moon.
A STRUCTURAL MODEL STUDY

A physical model of a dome in life-size scale was built for exhibition in the campus. In a team of five, we were assigned to study a dome structure and ultimately build a life-size scale model with
recycled materials. The materials used are plastic pipes, wooden sticks and screws.

Located within Eagley Bank Conservation Area with some existing trees need to be retained for preservation purposes, the 32 degree of slope is another major challenge in this housing development project. According to “Bolton’s Development Plan Document: Shaping the Future of Bolton”, we are required to conserve the character of the existing physical environment and give special attention to the materials used, height, roofscape and
design.

The slope of the site faces the north, making it difficult to receive ample amount of daylight.

“The Clouds” demonstrates coherence and versatility while “The Industrial Chic” was inspired by oyster cultivation method with the extensive use of
wire mesh in creating an industrial dining environment.
‘‘The Clouds’’
The ‘clouds’ is a framework consists of many equal-size boxes. Various approaches are explored to study the possibility of different use when the boxes come together. The ‘clouds’ integrates into suspended glass shelves, exhibition space and also dining tables and chairs. This proposal demonstrates coherence but also versatility at the same time.
The ‘clouds’ form furniture and this coherence creates a cosy environment for customers to dine in. The framework creates intriguing shadows and it frames the view from the table to the outside scenery as if a real-life painting.
‘‘The Industrial Chic’’
Shadows created by the wire mesh panels on ceilings and part of the walls create vibrant and intimate dining environment. Diffuse light generate softer shadow while direct light generate strong and clear shadow.
Inspired by oyster cultivation method, the extensive use of wire mesh celebrates the unique way of growing oyster. The use of materials and cold color scheme create a cool industrial dining environment.

The site is located in the west of Dachang County, Langfang City with a total land area of about 470 hectares. I joined the team at later stage and my roles were designing for the business district area, preparing the
overall masterplan and liasing with visualisers.
