REFLECTION

The season of Lent prepares us to celebrate the

paschal mystery of Jesus --- his saving death

and resurrection seen as a single act of God’s

love for us.

Christ in the battle against the powers of Satan

and darkness is the gospel’s embodiment of

this Sunday’s reading.

Lent provides us with a double task: it is a

time for us to renew our baptism or prepare for

it; this is also a time for stressing penance.

Given the Holy Spirit at baptism, we are to

reflect that it is our spiritual lives in God that

will sustain us: “We cannot live by bread

First Sunday of Lent

alone”. A challenge to the materialistic culture of our day which easily misleads and deceives

most of us. That is why the rich are condemned in Luke’s Gospel; not because they are rich but

because they see in wealth a security that can only come from God. The final temptation continues

the theme. It is not simply the abuse of power and riches; it is the thundering admonition of com-

mitting idolatry that their worship implies. This is personified by the devil, who is a liar - true

worship is the worship of God and according to John, the devil is a murderer from the very begin-

ning.

The point with idols is that we know their names. We feel we can manipulate them and be in con-

trol of them. So we must not turn God into an idol by putting him to a test. All this is surely why

this passage is such a splendid opening for Lent, as it faces us with truth about Jesus and how life

is to be lived at the deepest level of our being – it is then about the self-disclosure of Jesus to us and

our gift of the Holy Spirit who will sustain us in all the testing of our lives.

The Vatican Council pointed out the importance of times for prayer and penance (Liturgy Consti-

tution, no. 105) Our penance is to be social and external as well as personal and internal (no. 110):

we are called to works of love and self –sacrifice. The heart of the virtue of penance is “hatred of

sin as an offense against God” (no. 109).

In a single word, Lent is a time of conversion. The believing community is called to widen its Len-

ten activities by:

Hearing God’s word

More ardent prayer

Doing penance

Traditional penances include: Giving up sin; prayer, fasting, doing good works, giving alms;

carrying out our duties of state; meditative reading; abstinence, and controlling our desires for

possession and entertainment.

DIRECTIONS:

Read the Word of the Lord daily.

Faithfully attend our Community Praise and Worship, and faithfully offer your tithes and

love offerings.

GOD’S PROMISE:

“Those who love me, I will deliver, I will protect those who know my Name.”(Ps 91:14)

"Love is the Greatest Gift of All" - A Valentine’s Dinner Dance

Shortly after 7 pm on the evening of Saturday Feb. 9, a large throng of BLD faithful and supporters

braved the intimidating snow banks of Clark Avenue West and filed through the doors of William

Garnet Community Centre to experience why "Love is the Greatest Gift of All."

The fund-raising Valentines event - put together by "working warriors" of Class ME29, and spear-

headed by DCS Joey and Susan Linsao, was a tremendous success. Turnout was well above expec-

tations in spite of earlier fear of a mother-nature-winter conspiracy.

The Linsaos gave a spiritually-uplifting speech and thanked the ME29 group, specifically Project

Coordinators Ariel and Ethel Ang and Logistics gurus Gil and Dolly Valencia for a job well done.

Special thanks to so many kind hearted and generous hearts who shared their resources and tal-

ents, even on a short notice.

Wonderful prizes were drawn and given away throughout the evening including a 32-inch Sam-

sung TV. Another big hit of the night was the photo booth and the roses; and not to be outdone

was the water and pop bar that earned more than what the group expected. Love songs filled the

air while bouncy tunes dominated the dance floor. Highlight of the party was a beautiful rendition

by the ME29 family, of the theme "Love is the greatest gift of all."

The ME 29 working team was comprised of Ethel & Ariel Ang, Elsa and Rico Calderon, Fe and

Bavi Dela Cruz, Linda & Charlie Delfin, Geena and Manny Feliciano, Weng and Dexter Javier

Carmen Jimenez, Joan & Allan Llaneta, Gloria & Lino Mante, Mavic & Art Tambuyat, Dolly & Gil

Valencia.
