ONE WEEKEND, 120 STUDENTS, ONE AMAZING EXPERIENCE

MUNA – WHAT IS IT?

• Set up in a United Nations format with

speaking protocols, Secretary General and

resolutions to debate.

• A 1 or 2 day debating style program.

• Teams of 3 representing the political,

religious and cultural beliefs of a country.

MUNA – WHY WE DO IT

• A popular youth program within Rotary – 3

MUNA programs in D9685, including the

introduction of Western Sydney MUNA in

2016.

• Provides students with a greater

understanding of UN.

• An opportunity for students to network and

learn about other Rotary programs.

MUNA – HOW IT WORKS

•Schools enter teams of 3 students

•Approximately 40 teams participate at the event.

•Teams are allocated a country 2 months prior to the

event – the need to learn as much as possible about the

context of the country they will be representing

(political status, religious, position within UN etc)

•Teams are provided with the resolutions 2 months in

advance. They prepare their responses based on

whether they are for the resolution, against the

resolution or wish to make an amendment.

D9685 MUNA – NATIONALLY RECOGNISED

• In 2015, SHORE School attended National

MUNA as the Runner Up of D9685 MUNA and

won.

• The team then took the opportunity to travel to

New York for the International Model UN.

• Our MUNA program receives enquiries from

clubs, schools and students around the country as

our website displays a professional view of the

program.

MUNA – 2016 DEVELOPMENTS

• New Website – Directs schools and clubs to the most

appropriate MUNA in the District.

• MUNA Operations Manual – Legacy for future clubs.

• Full review of program processes and operations to

bring the program into the 21st Century e.g. Online

voting.

• Western Sydney MUNA – to meet the long term

demand of the District.

available for 2016!

• New host club 2018-2020 – interest from

Ryde and Beecroft.

• Developing a key contact list with the schools

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SCIENCE EXPERIENCE

1988-89 Rotary Club of Doncaster & the Australian Scientific Industry Association, developed the idea

1990 First program runs at Monash University Clayton

Siemens commenced naming right sponsorship, reducing it in 2009 and concluded finally in 2012

Rotary Districts adopted it as a Youth Service program

ConocoPhillips commenced naming right sponsorship in 2013

Program now runs in 34 - 37 different venues annually

Three/ four days of hands-on science and technology

fun and activities for young Australians

in years 9 and 10

The program is non-selective and open to ALL students in Years 9 & 10

Practical involvement in laboratory experiments

Engagement in “real science”

Share in discussions

Mix with other like minded students

was developed

by The University of

Newcastle to encourage

students to include

science based subjects

in their final years of

high school.

be a nerd to enjoy

teams using

only the

materials and

equipment

provided

Students are allocated

to one of eight

Challenges available

on the day.

Challenges are as

diverse as

bridge building,

code breaking

&

creating electrical

circuits

IT WORKS!

Research findings

Participation in the Challenge:

• Increases student’s awareness of careers in

science & engineering.

• Increases interest in Science and Engineering

• Influences decisions to undertake science and

maths in high school

• Dramatically improves teamwork & self confidence

The Challenge is in its

• Youth Exchange students from district 9685 are students who are:

– outgoing,

– willing to try new things,

– want to learn a new language,

– adventurous,

– Mostly from Government Schools and

– about to learn a whole lot about themselves and about Rotary.

• We are already number 1 district in Sydney for Youth Exchange.

• Restructure the committee along geographical lines

• Increase number of clubs hosting students


OUTBOUND STUDENTS in 2017

• Currently Year 9 or 10 (2016)

• Return to start Year 11 in 2018

• 18 preliminary applications

INBOUND STUDENTS in 2016-17

• Attend year 10-11 or 11-12 in Australia

• Usually have not finished school in their home country

• Pam Bennett has papers for placement


HOSTING

• Exchange = exchange Students Come & Go

• Hosting – vital part of program

• Inbound students – 3 or 4 families

• Outbound student families – host for 6 months

• Clubs need to find only 2 families

• Combine with another club

• Students mentoring inbound and returned students

• Too young to join Rotaract

• Keep them connected with Rotary with young ideas & approach.

DISTRICT 9685 INTERACT PRESENTATION 2016

In 1949 The Rotary International

Board Adopted The Slogan:

“Every Rotarian An Example To Youth”.

Interact Is A Service Club For Youth Aged 12 To 18.


They are school based clubs, and meet at least twice a month. When you sponsor an interact club you are helping young people to connect with community leaders and develop leadership skills.


Currently there are 20,046 interact

Clubs worldwide with an estimated

Membership of 461,058.

The top 3 countries are:-

District 9685 has 8 chartered clubs

The oldest being Abbotsleigh

The newest club Brisbane waters Secondary college.

My goal is that every Rotary club in D9685 should sponsor an Interact Club.

Realistically by year end I hope we can show progress.

DISTRICT INTERACT PRESENTATION 2016

Interact clubs helps to recognise and develop constructive leadership skills and personal integrity.

• Builds respect for the rights of others and emphasize acceptance of individual responsibility.

• To develop life skills, self development, time management, and to recognise the dignity and value of all useful occupations to serve society.

• To provide opportunities for gaining increased knowledge and understanding of community, national and world affairs.


A recent survey held in NSW schools, covered student connectedness, well being, schools and communities.

Survey results showed increased engagement at school, higher levels of school completion

and academic achievement.


Reduction in anti-social or disruptive behaviours.

Strategies for improving better connectedness to the school, families and community

Could be:-

Empowering students to have a voice.

Engaging community partners to provide a range of services that the school students need.

This to me is our Rotary entry point.


When you sponsor an Interact

Club it becomes a joint activity

Between the two clubs.

Students have the guidance of

Rotarians who help with

their chosen fundraising

Event.


Rotarians are encouraged to

• ATTEND INTERACT MEETINGS.

• ALL CLUB MEMBERS, NOT JUST LEFT TO THE YOUTH DIRECTOR.

Rotary clubs have a captive audience to discus other Rotary youth programs such as RYPEN,

Youth Exchange and RYLA.


May 2 will see the 2nd annual Interact conference sponsored

by district 9675. This year they have extended the invitation to district 9685 and d9670.

Registration is now open please, ask me for the details.


Lastly don’t forget Interact Week which will be held between 2nd and 8th November.

A great opportunity to launch new interact clubs.

I’m happy to visit any clubs who wish to further explore this part of our rotary family.
