Summer camps provide a refresh-ing opportunity for children with a wide range of disabilities

to relax and be themselves among peers who understand and can relate to them. Across Colorado, multiple camps will be offered this summer for children and their families. The focus of these camps is on acceptance, both of self and others, friendship build-ing, and the development of self- advocacy skills. During their stays, campers will have the opportunity to challenge themselves both physically and mentally, with activities such as

ropes courses, kayaking, horseback riding, rock climbing and more.

These highly specialized camps fill up quickly, so call as soon as possible for more information or to register for one of these unique, whole child- centered camps.

12 | RMPARENT | PROGRAM & ACTIVITY GUIDE

With over 300 days of sunshine every year, Coloradans are spoiled when it comes to

weather. If it’s foul outside, we know we just need to wait awhile—sometimes minutes—and it will change, so there’s really no reason not to include time out-doors in every day’s plans. For too many children, time outside is becoming less a part of their daily agenda, however.

Research by George Mason Univer-sity Professor Laurlyn Harmon shows “kids are spending 50-percent less time outdoors than they did 10 years ago...Couple [that] trend with increasing levels of child obesity, decreasing time of outdoor play in grade schools and increasing need for support of public lands, and it’s clear why reduced time spent outdoors is a national concern.”

It’s also a state concern. The 2016

Colorado Health Report Card (www.coloradohealth.org/ReportCard) says the obesity rate for Colorado’s children is 10.9 percent, up 1 percent from 2007. The rate for adults climbed to 21.5 per-cent from 18.4 percent.

So playing outside, a great way to be active to help maintain a healthy weight, seems like a win-win with additional benefits.

WAYS TO PLAYResearch shows that kids who play out-doors are more creative and imaginative, earn better grades in school, live longer and experience happier childhoods.

And there are endless ways to enjoy the outdoors. One of the best things kids can do—outdoors or in—is to have un-structured play time, allowing them to use their imagination and naturally stay active.

If your children are not accustomed to being turned loose in the yard, they may tell you they’re “bored” and “there’s nothing to do.” But fear not. “Boredom is good for kids. It forces them to en-tertain themselves, which ignites their creative intelligence. From this, they learn that they can solve their own prob-lems. This is huge!” says Lenore Skenazy, author of Free Range Kids (http://free rangekids.wordpress.com/ ).

As parents, be available for ideas (and to share safety tips), but let your kids learn how to come up with their own ideas. If they need help getting their cre-ative juices flowing, suggest they:

• Ride a bike• Go for a walk• Explore a field• Swim in a pool or lake• Play sports

LOCAL CONNECTIONSMany entities throughout northern Col-orado make it easy to get active, includ-ing the Healthy Kids Club, UCHealth. Healthy Kids Club is well known for hosting its popular Healthy Kids Run Series, which consists of eight local one-mile fun runs. Elementary students ages 5-12 are eligible to register for the free run series and will receive a punch card to track their participation.  Kids who participate in four or more runs earn prizes.  Registration is underway (it starts April 1). Register online at

www.healthykidclub.org.Another way Healthy Kids Club

promotes active fun the whole family can enjoy is through its Fit Families on the Move programs. Registered families receive a calendar and an all-access pass for over 100 free and low-cost summer activities in Fort Collins, Loveland, Windsor and surrounding areas. Activ-ities include free or discounted swims, hikes, laser tag, mini golf, bowling and more. The cost of the program is $5 per family member; scholarships also are available.  For registration information, visit www.healthykidsclub.org.

“Fit Families on the Move is a great way for families to explore new pools, recreational facilities and outdoor expe-riences in northern Colorado,” says Lau-rie Zenner, Healthy Kids Club manager. “The low cost is intended to make these

activities more accessible for family members of all ages. Everyone can join in and get fit having fun!”

Educo Leadership Adventures has recently joined forces with No Barriers USA, another locally based organi-zation. They are working together to help kids of all abilities enjoy the great outdoors and reach their full potential. Adventure programs include camping, backpacking, rock climbing, white- water rafting and mountain boarding for youth 10 to 16 years of age. Educo Adventure Programs have a tiered pricing structure and full “camperships”

for those who qualify “because we want to make the wilder-ness and outdoors available to everyone,” says Nick Pellitteri, No Barriers Asso-ciate Director of Colorado

Adventure Programs.Pellitteri also says Educo/

No Barrriers partners with other pro-grams in the area, like the Boys & Girls Clubs of Larimer County and Kids @ Heart, to offer summer camps for their participants. Many of these groups use the Educo Adventure Camp near Red Feather Lakes.”

Another nearby camp facility en-joyed by thousands of families each year is the YMCA of the Rockies (www.ymcarockies.org) located in Estes Park. It offers day camp and overnight pro-grams, which enable kids to learn, grow and play together in a supportive and nurturing atmosphere.

Greeley’s Centennial Village Museum is an eight-acres of history, which allows visitors to experience northeastern Colorado as it was over 100 years ago. The Village offers several family events through this season, beginning on April 21 when it will host Baby Animal Days. Sev-eral furry friends will be available to interact with children ages 2 and up. May 28-29, the Village will celebrate its 40th anniversary. Visitors will enjoy Native American tipis, buffalo soldiers, blacksmithing, timber cut-ting and historic home tours.
