YOUTH ORCHESTRAS OF LUBBOCK INFORMATION FOR AUDITION, 2018-2019 YOL MISSION To provide an exceptional music education experience to the members of the orchestras. To provide artistic performances that enrich the lives of developing musicians, our community, and our region. To work cooperatively with public and private schools, and independent music teachers in a continuing effort to provide musical development for youth. ENSEMBLE CONDUCTORS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA PRELUDE STRING ORCHESTRA Dr. Laurie Williams Dr. Ross Thomas Ipsen Kathleen Smith YOL’S Artistic Staff also includes respected West Texas music educators, professional musicians, and conductors who lead Sectionals and Large Group Rehearsals throughout the academic year. YOL is open to any young musician through Grade 12 who plays an orchestral instrument. For string players, their experience begins with the Prelude String Orchestra, progresses through the Philharmonic Orchestra and culminates with the Symphony Orchestra. Woodwind, brass, and percussion students are included beginning with the Philharmonic Orchestra and they may progress to the Symphony Orchestra, as well. Auditions are held for all orchestra levels. Open auditions for all orchestras will be held for new & continuing students during the Formal Spring Semester Auditions for the following academic year. Auditions for advancement between orchestras will only occur at the Formal Spring Semester Auditions. Further auditions will be held at the conductors’ discretion before the Fall & Spring Semesters for new students. All YOL members must re-audition every year are committed to performing both Fall and Spring semesters. ORCHESTRA DESCRIPTIONS PRELUDE STRING ORCHESTRA Designed for beginning to intermediate string players, this orchestra serves less experienced musicians by developing their performance technique to prepare them for participation in the Philharmonic Orchestra. There is no minimum age requirement for this orchestra, but the student must be able to read music and be attentive for rehearsals. PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA The Philharmonic experience is designed for intermediate to advanced string, woodwind, brass, and percussion students. The performance levels appropriate for the Philharmonic are pursuant to the TX Full Orchestra Grades 2, 3, & 4 lists. The purpose of the Philharmonic is to prepare students for advanced musicianship and rehearsal skills necessary for a successful experience in the Symphony Orchestra. SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA The YOL Symphony Orchestra is designed for the most advanced string, woodwind, brass, and percussion students. The Symphony Orchestra performs music from standard professional orchestral repertoire. The purpose of the Symphony Orchestra is to provide students with the necessary skills to succeed in professional ensembles and future music careers. To encourage these professional standards, the YOL Symphony hosts an annual concerto competition for its members.     AUDITION RESULTS All students will be notified of audition results by May 1st, 2018. If you have further questions regarding auditions results, please contact the YOL Program Director.

    TUITION Annual auditions for all new and returning YOL members require a $25 audition fee, to be paid in cash on the audition date. Audition fees are non-refundable.

    Annual tuition rates (as of Jan. 2018): $295.00 - Prelude String Orchestra $345.00 - Philharmonic Orchestra $370.00 - Symphony Orchestra

    Please note: Additional fees may apply if students wish to participate in add-on activities during the year which occur outside of the regular fall and spring concert series (a regular concert series consists of 8 rehearsals and 1 concert each).

    Additional payments will be made based on the orchestra in which you are enrolled. 

    • Each member in the YOL Program in responsible for payment of all applicable tuition and fees. • Once accepted, you will receive an online tuition invoice based on your admitted orchestra. • Any funds paid toward tuition, be it by installment or lump-sum, are non-refundable after the first

    rehearsal. Prior to the first rehearsal, 30% of any deposit made is non-refundable. Please contact the Program Director about any necessary information during the summer months.

    FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE If financial assistance is needed, you may send a completed financial aid application or a letter of intent to apply for financial aid to [email protected] by May 30th. Aid applications are obtained by request from the Program Director or by download from the website. It is the desire of the YOL Program that no student be denied participation in the program due to financial need.
