The Community Fund of Bronxville Eastchester

Tuckahoe, Inc. is a non-profit corporation founded in1919 organized to provide funding and support forlocal agencies and community programs serving thehealth, education, and welfare needs of the residents ofBronxville, Eastchester and Tuckahoe.

The Community Fund is the one local organizationthat, through the efforts of many volunteers, not onlyraises funds annually to provide essential grants forlocal social service organizations, but also, equallyimportant, evaluates and provides them technicalassistance. Almost everyone has benefited directly orindirectly from the many programs and projects TheCommunity Fund supports.

We are proud to present our Annual Report to theCommunity describing the contributions of TheCommunity Fund of Bronxville Eastchester Tuckahoe,Inc. during the period July 1, 2008 – June 30, 2009.Special thanks to Tom Likovich, last year’s President, andhis able Board for their hard work and enthusiasticsupport of the Fund and the programs we support.

We also wish to thank the entire community for theirgenerosity during a difficult year. Your support of theFund and the vital programs in our community – reallymade a difference to so many! This past spring, TheCommunity Fund was pleased to provide over $521,000in grants. Your contributions provided support for over30 social service agencies and numerous communityinitiatives which benefit the Bronxville, Eastchester andTuckahoe communities. Your support helps the young andthe old, students needing guidance, families dealing withmedical and substance abuse problems, the disabledneeding support and socialization, to name a few.

This year The Community Fund is celebrating its 90 yearold heritage, and our community’s future. We want tohonor the energy, enthusiasm and boundless generosity ofour donors and the agencies we support. Who We AreBeginningsThe Community Fund of Bronxville Eastchester Tuckahoe,Inc. was founded on October 2, 1919, as The CommunityWelfare Fund, Inc., to support Lawrence Hospital, TheAssociated Charities of Eastchester, and other charitableagencies or welfare work in the community. The Fund servedthe community during the Depression and World War II,providing basic support to families and the war effort.During the war, The Community Fund also raised money forthe USO and the National War Fund.

TransitionFrom 1919-1979, The Community Welfare Fund underwentseveral name changes. In the 1940’s and early 1950’s, thename became The Community Chest (the Red Feather forthose who remember). In 1954, the name was changed to theUnited Fund of Bronxville Eastchester Tuckahoe, Inc. Later,in 1965, the organization affiliated with the United Fund ofWestchester which became known as the United Way ofWestchester in 1978.

On July 1, 1980, The United Fund of Bronxville-Eastchester-Tuckahoe severed its affiliation with the United Way ofWestchester to ensure that all funds raised locally wouldremain in the three communities. It reestablished itself underits original charter of 1919 and changed its name to TheCommunity Fund of Bronxville Eastchester Tuckahoe, Inc.,thereby reaffirming the organization’s original objectives.

The PresentOver the past ten years, the Community Fund has provideover $5,000,000 in local support for social service agenciesand community projects providing vital services to theBronxville, Eastchester and Tuckahoe communities. Eachyear representatives from The Community Fund work closelywith elected officials, clergy, school administrators and othercommunity groups to identify needs in our area. In additionto funding, The Community Fund also providesadministrative support to the agencies through on-goingvisits, consultations, workshops and forums.

For the year ending June 30, 2009, The Community Fundraised over $650,000 through the generous support of over1000 individuals and local business to our Annual Campaignand Golf Outing. We are pleased to announce that our netfunds raised in combination with our income frominvestments permitted us to provide over $520,000 in grantsfor the coming year.

Commonly Asked QuestionsWhy a Community Fund?Since our founding in 1919, The Community Fund has supportedagencies and programs that provide vital services within Bronxville,Eastchester and Tuckahoe. These services help thousands of ourneighbors each year, at little or no expense to those least able to pay.These agencies and programs rely on the support of the Fund.

The Community Fund is largely staffed and administered by membersof our own community volunteering their time and talents. Expensesare kept as low as possible as a result.

Your donation to The Community Fund is a direct investment in thequality of life in your community. It truly is “local giving for local needs”.

Does my contribution stay in our community?Yes. We target our support exclusively to programs and agencies thatserve our neighborhoods. Our ongoing evaluation with each agencyhelps insure we understand where each dollar goes and how it meetsa local need.

What needs do we have?The need for social services and support cuts across all social andeconomic segments. And these needs often occur unexpectedlyduring times of financial or physical hardship. Whether it is servicesfor the aging, our youth or families in crisis, The Community Fundagencies and programs meet an increasing need for their services …right here in our own community.

Where does my contribution go?The Community Fund volunteers work directly with each of the 30+programs and projects we support to insure that our giving isinvested within our own neighborhoods. The Fund works with eachorganization funded throughout the year providing counsel as well asfinancial support. We know the organizations and the important workthey do.

How Can I Contribute?The Community Fund is a 501(c)(3) non-profit which raises moneyannually to support community grants through its Annual Campaignin the fall and its Golf Outing in the spring. During the fall AnnualCampaign, member organizations support The Community Fund’sefforts to raise funds for all the organizations and agree not to solicitthe community during this period. The Golf Outing registrationbegins in January.
