    A PETITION has been set up byresidents of Sandgate seafront ina campaign to stop their neigh-bourhood becoming the Benidormof Shepway.A 98-signature protest was handed in to

    Shepway council in November from residentsin Radnor Cliff Crescent, Radnor Cliff andThe Riviera to help prevent any future over-development.

    Now the council is preparing to revise itsplans and include the streets in an enlargedSandgate conservation area.

    The statement on the petition read: Ourunique area is in danger of being wrecked byover-intensive and unsympathetic develop-ments and we wish to have the unique charac-ter of this area respected, including its previ-ous trees and green spaces.

    The protest was set up after three planningapplications were made which campaignerssaid would harm the area.

    Ian Barker, chairman of the Radnor andRiviera Residents Association, said in aspeech to the council that 95 per cent of thosewho lived in the area had signed the petitionand that it was a unique part of England.

    He said: There is considerable strength offeeling among the residents that developershave targeted our area.

    If developers had their way, it could easilybecome the ugly Benidorm of Shepway.

    We are absolutely opposed to the develop-ment of large blocks of small flats that are only
