CAMPAIGNERS backingLydd airports controversialexpansion plans have denied

any rift following the setting-up of another support groupahead of a public inquiry.

Supporters Of Lydd Airport, orSOLA, will run alongside the moreestablished Friends Of Lydd Airport(FLAG) to provide a dual approach toargue both the technical and commu-nity aspects of the proposals, it isclaimed.

Lydd landlord Tim Crompton, who

helped set up SOLA, said the groupwould speak up for the business andcommunity benefits of the proposeddevelopment, which was approved inMarch last year when Shepway coun-cillors chose to reject the recommen-dation of their own officers.

The decision to build a 500,000-passenger terminal and 444-metrerunway extension will be scrutinisedat public inquiry after an appeal by

Government conservation bodyNatural England, whose advice hadalso been overridden by councillors.

Mr Crompton,who runs The George

hotel in Lydd high street, toldYourshepway:The fact is the town isdying, it needs some investment andthe only place we are going to get anyis from something like the airport.

When youve something willing toput millions of pounds into an area,you should really grab it.

He said SOLA differed from FLAGdue to the latter concentrating on the

One of the highlights of last year was the first-ever successful breedingby purple herons in the UK, at Dungeness RSPB reserve. The eventbrought thousands of visitors to Romney Marsh and thrust the area intothe national-media spotlight. We can but wait to see what this year holdsfor Shepway, but many in the district are hoping that its rich naturalenvironment which attracts so much wealth will not be sacrificed ina spree of development.
