Be the first to write your opinion!
The sheer wealth of information that social media
platforms now enable users to send out has blurred
the distinction between media producers and
consumers, a seminar heard on Thursday.
At the You Are the Media event, held as part of
Communications Week at University of Indonesia,
the buzz was all about yournalism, a portmanteau
of you and journalism to highlight the changing
media landscape.
Everything has changed now; everybody is the
media and produces information, well-known
blogger Wicaksono said at the discussion.
He added that these self-made information producers
and their writings could eventually become as
inspiring and influential as established authors and
works published in the conventional media.
The seminar highlighted how anyone with access to
the Internet could now produce his or her own
writings and publish them on blogs or microblogging
platforms such as Twitter and gain a following.
But before embarking on the journey toward
becoming an inspirational blogger or tweep, users
need to ask themselves what they aim to achieve,
according to radio and television show host Pandji
Pragiwaksono, a speaker at the event.
You have to know what you want to do and set your
goals on what you want to achieve, he said.
He added that if bloggers wrote honestly and openly
in expressing their opinions on certain issues, it
would show in their writing, which in turn would
attract a lot of readers.
Even with the text limited to 140 characters, as in
Twitter, Pandji said that every single tweet counted
as an expression of ideas and opinions channeled
through the social media platform.
The more you tweet, the better, because itll help
you get used to expressing your opinion, he said,
adding that to have any kind of influence in the social
media sphere required lots of practice in writing.
However, campaigning for a cause through social
media requires more than just blogging or tweeting,
although these platforms can be a good way to start
raising awareness of certain issues, said another
panelist, Pangeran Siahaan, the creative chief of the
Provocative Proactive show on news channel Metro
TV, which Pandji hosts.
A movement in social media will not be reported on
in the conventional media unless it is followed by real
action and doesnt stop at simply creating a hashtag
[on Twitter], he said.
He added that recognition and coverage by theconventional media would allow a movement to be

more influential, given the wider audience reach that
established media such as television and
newspapers enjoy.
However, he warned that treating social causes
generated on social media as representative of the
Indonesian peoples aspirations was delusional
because only a small percentage of the countrys
population had access to the Internet.
Roughly an eighth, or 31 million of the country s 242
million people use the Internet, a figure that is
expected to increase to 94 million by 2015, according
to a report released last September by the Boston
Consulting Group.
Even for those who have [Internet access], only
some of them are actively engaged in social media,
so such a movement could only be said to be a
representation of the countrys middle class,
Pangeran said.
Indonesians account for the second-biggest
population on Facebook, behind the United States
but ahead of Britain, and the third-biggest on Twitter.
The last quarter of 2010 saw more than five million
users from Indonesia join Facebook.
Data from Facebook.com and GreyReview.com
showed that as of Jan. 1, 2011, there were a total of
32,129,460 registered Indonesian Facebook users,
compared with 26,598,240 in October.
Blogger Wicaksono said that even as social media
provided a new platform for users to express their
opinions, the debate on whether freedom of
expression on the Internet should be regulated by the
government in a code of ethics was still raging.
But I guess theres no need for that; we can use our
own conscience as a code of ethics, he said.
