The “Buy Recycled” marketing campaign forms an integral part of theDepartmental of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning’sstrategy to stimulate the Recycling Economy in the Western Cape.Buying products made from recycled material reduces ones ecologicalfootprint but also diverts the amount of waste from entering our over-stretched landfill sites. The diversion of waste and the reintroductionof this material into our economy contribute to our economic growthwith lesser environmental pressure. The use of recycled material asinput material into the production of products, in place of or complement-ing virgin material supports the recovery of recyclables. The demandfor recyclables in particularly by the manufacturing sector contributesto sustain and potentially grow the jobs in the waste recovery andconversion sector in the Western Cape. This campaign demonstratesour commitment to mainstream sustainability and to optimise resource-use efficiency as one of the avenues to creating an open opportunitysociety for all in the Western Cape.

The catalogue demonstrates that discarded material can have tremend-ous value if it is carefully collected and transformed or upgraded withquality in mind. It also makes it easier to find and buy products thatwill do the least harm when they are produced.

The 2010 catalogue is the third edition since its inception in 2008 whenthe “buy recycled” campaign was launched. This campaign has in part-icularly provided a marketing platform for SMMEs that have incorporatedrecyclate in their products alongside larger companies that have demon-strated their environmental responsibility. We will therefore continueto explore ways to stimulate recycling that benefits our citizens andthe environment. An increase in the number of products exhibited inthis catalogue and the positive responses from the public bears furthertestimony that this economy is vibrant and has a huge growth potential.

I therefore urge society at large to support this campaign and contributetowards the much needed economic recovery that is inline with thetriple bottom line. This will undoubtedly benefit citizens and businessesin the province.

One of the Province’s eco-efficiency initiatives, the2Wise2Waste programme focuses on minimisingenvironmental impacts of provincial governmentdepartments through initiatives such as minimizingresource use and wastage, improving water andenergy efficiencies and green procurement practices.

When you close the loop and buyproducts made from recycled ma-terials you save energy, preventpollution and create employment.

Making products from recycledma-terials saves between 35 to 90percent of the energy that is neededto extract, refine and manufactureproducts from new raw materials.

Closing the loop also reduces theamount of pollutants and toxinsre-leased from energy generation.

It is estimated that ten times morejobs are associated with recyclingand the manufacturing of goodsfrom recycled products that withwaste disposal.

Look out for products withrecucled content when you buy,and recycle and reduce yourenvironmental impact at work andhome.
