Potash Price hammered as russians may flood market
cbc.ca - Shares of major North American potash producers fell sharply Tuesday on word that a Russian company is pulling out of a m a rk e t i n g g ro u p a n d i s e x p e c t e d t o u n d e r c u t competitors’ prices for the fertilizer.
OAO Ur a l k a l i a n n o u n c e d Tuesday it was withdrawing from a joint venture with another
company from Belarus that set the price for about a third of the world’s potash supply. Instead, it plans to sell more potash to China, which buys about one fifth of the world’s supply of the fertilizer.
“Our co-operation with our Belarusian partners … has come to a deadlock,” Uralkali CEO Vladislav Baumgertner said in a s t a t e m e n t p o s t e d o n t h e company’s website.

Ypredirect our export deliveries through our own trader,” he said, adding he wouldn’t exclude the possibility of co-operation on a mutually beneficial basis in future.
Uralkali has a much lower cost o f p r o d u c t i o n t h a n r i v a l PotashCorp of Saskatchewan, which was briefly Canada’s most valuable company in 2010 before the government stepped in and blocked a $40 billion takeover offer from Australian mining giant BHP Billiton.
sharP selloff“Uralkali ’s announcement
completely turns the global potash market upside down,” analyst Elena Sakhnova of VTB C a p i t a l i n M o s c o w t o l d Bloomberg.
“If previously global potash producers were acting like an oligopoly, working with the rule that benefited higher potash prices … now the market will be fully competitive.”
Uralkal i has expenses of roughly $170 for every ton of p o t a s h i t p r o d u c e s. T h a t compares with the industry average of $240 a ton, an agricultural analyst at Goldman Sachs noted in a report Tuesday.
The moves by Uralikali could move the price of potash below $300 a ton, the company’s CEO warned Tuesday.
After a run-up before and after the global recession that began in 2008, the world potash market is currently oversupplied.
“The overall market is likely to remain in surplus for the next few years,” CIBC World Markets said in a recent research report. “That implies that the outlook for prices will hinge to some degree
on producers’ ability to maintain overall production discipline.”
A major supplier pulling out of the cartel that had effectively been setting prices is a clear sign that discipline is ending, which means companies will have to vie for market share while prices move lower.
Saskatchewan as a whole has the world’s largest reserves of potash, with PotashCorp holding the lion’s share. Canadian potash companies typically sell through a similar venture known as C a n p o t e x , w h i c h i s a b l e effectively to set prices because of its size.
Shares in Canada’s major potash companies sold off heavily Tuesday in reaction to the news. At one point, PotashCorp plunged almost 25 per cent to $28.70 US in New York trading. Mosaic fell $13.11 or 24.64 per cent to $40.10, and Agrium was down $11.93 or 13.05 per cent to $79.50.
With the selloff, PotashCorp has now lost roughly 50 per cent of its value since the BHP Billiton takeover was blocked in 2010. Ad j u s t e d f o r s t o c k s p l i t s , PotashCorp is getting close to the level it was at before BHP Billiton came on the scene.
The company lowered its earnings forecast by roughly 20 per cent last week, citing lower prices.
“Highly competitive markets around the world had an impact on our results,” PotashCorp chief executive Bill Doyle said at the time.

A man calls home to his wife and says, “Honey I have been asked to go fishing at a big lake up in
Canada with my boss and several of his friends. We’ll be gone for a week. This is a good opportunity for me to get that promotion I’ve
been wanting, so would you please pack me enough clothes for a week and set out my rod and tackle box. We’re leaving from the office and I will swing by the house to pick my things up. Oh! And please pack my
new blue silk pajamas.”
The wife thinks this sounds a little fishy but being a good wife she does exactly what her husband
asked. The following weekend he comes home a little tired but oth-
erwise looking good.
The wife welcomes him home and asks if he caught many fish. He
says, “Yes! Lots of Walleye, some Blue gill, and a few Pike. But why didn’t you pack my new blue silk pajamas like I asked you to do?”
The wife replies; “I did, they were in your tackle box.

July 31, 1715:Hurricane sinks Spanish treasure ships
A hurricane strikes the east coast of Florida, sinking 10 Span-ish treasure ships and killing nearly 1,000 people, on this day in 1715. All of the gold and silver onboard at the time would not be recovered until 250 years later. From 1701, Spain sent fleets of ships to the Western Hemi-sphere to bring back natural resources, including gold and sil-ver. These groups of ships were heavily fortified against pirates, but there was little that could be done to protect them from bad weather. On July 24, 10 Spanish ships and one French ship left Ha-vana, Cuba, on their way to Europe, carrying tons of gold and silver coins, about 14 million pesos worth. The Spanish ships stayed very close to the Florida coast, as was the custom, while the French ship, the Grifon, ventured further out from the shore. A week later, as the ships were between Cape Canaveral and Fort Pierce, in modern-day Florida, the winds picked up dramatically. The hurricane advanced quickly and, one by one, the ships were wrecked. The Nuestra Senora de la Regla sank, sending 200 people and 120 tons of coins to a watery grave. The Santa Cristo de San Ramon went down with 120 sailors aboard. In all, somewhere between 700 and 1,000 people lost their lives in the wrecks. Meanwhile, the Grifon was able to ride out the storm; most of its crew survived. In the following months, Spanish officials in Havana sent ships to salvage the treasure. About 80 percent had been recov-ered by April 1716, but the rest remained lost until the 1960s.
1989: Cable channel CBC Newsworld launches
When viewers first tune in to CBC Newsworld, they see a slew of technical hiccups. Satellites lose their signals, audio crackles in and out, and hosts clum-sily stumble through their first demanding day. But, for the first time in this country, Canadians have their own dedicated 24-hour news channel. Designed for on-the-go viewers, Newsworld offers frequent news updates and magazine style programming. The network has an exhilarating if not perfect debut as shown in this television report.
Also on July 31:• 1917: The Third Battle of Ypres, also known as Passchedaele, begins in Belgium during the First World War. The Canadian Corps capture Passchendaele Ridge on Nov. 6 after attempts by the Australians, New Zealanders and British failed. The Canadians suffered more than 15,000 dead and were awarded nine Victoria Crosses for bravery.• 1955: At 17, Marilyn Bell of Toronto becomes the youngest person to swim the English Channel.

PREVENTING AND CONTROLLING BED BUGS
Safeguard Your Family and Home from Bed Bug Pest
It is possible for anyone, anywhere to expe-rience a bed bug infestation; however, bed bugs can be prevented and controlled with appropri-ate precautions. In recent years Saskatchewan and other Canadian provinces and territories have seen an increase in the number of bed bug reports, heightening the need to take appropri-ate precautions toavoid these pests. Summertime is an active time for travel and further increases ones risk to bed bug exposure. Bed bugs are reddish-brown insects with oval-shaped wingless bodies. If they’ve had a recent blood meal they can be similar in size and shape to an apple seed. Bed bugs usually bite at night and often target the face, neck, upper torso, arms, and hands. Most bed bug bites are initial-ly painless but could turn into large, itchy skin welts. There arecurrently no known cases of infectious diseases transmitted to people by bed bug bites. Bites will eventually go away by themselves and don’t require treatment. If you suspect bed bugs there are several ways to confirm their presence. Use a bright flashlight to look for bed bugs or their dark droppings in bedroom furniture, windows, baseboards, and doorframes. Or, use a hot hair dryer, a thin knife, or a playing card to force them out of hid-ing spaces and cracks. Check the following areas of your house orapartment: behind your headboard and cracks
and crevices in your bed, seams/tufts of mat-tresses, inside the box spring and along the bed frame, along bedroom baseboards, in and around nightstands, and other bedroom items such as window casings, pictures, mouldings, and furniture. If you are aware of bed bugs in your home there are several important steps to follow for successful eradication:- Consult with your landlord, building manager, local Public Health Unit, or a pest control pro-fessional to confirm that you have bed bugs.- Use a nozzle attachment on the vacuum to remove live adult bed bugs and immature bed bugs (called nymphs) and their eggs.- Vacuum all crevices on your mattress, bed frame, baseboards, and any objects close to the bed.- It is essential to vacuum daily and empty the vacuum bag immediately or seal it and place it in the freezer for several days.- Wash all your clothing, bed sheets, blankets, mattress pads, pillows, and their cases in the hottest water possible and place them in a hot dryer for 30 minutes.- Consider covering your pillows and mattress with a plastic cover.- Remove all unnecessary clutter.- Seal cracks and crevices between baseboards, on wood bed frames, floors, and walls with caulking.- Repair or remove peeling wallpaper, tighten loose light switch covers, and seal any openings where pipes, wires, or other utilities come into your home (pay special attention to walls that are shared between apartments).- Properly dispose of infested items that cannot
be cleaned.- Seal all items tightly in a plastic garbage bag and discard in a clearly labeled outside contain-er.- Bed bug control requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach that includes proper preparation and inspection, identifica-tion, and housekeeping. This will ensure the risk of pesticide exposure is minimized, the environ-ment is protected, and the effectiveness of the treatment is maximized. Even if you have never encountered bed bugs the following prevention measures will help minimize your risk to welcoming them into your home: be careful when buying used furni-ture or clothes and make sure to inspect them thoroughly prior to purchasing, never bring discarded bed frames, mattresses, box springs, upholstered furniture, orelectronics into your home (these may be infest-ed with bed bugs), when travelling be sure to in-spect the room and its furniture for blood spots, droppings, or live insects and request a different room if you suspect any evidence of bed bugs. Upon returning home from travel inspect your luggage before bringing it into your home and wash clothing on the hottest setting possible fol-lowed by 30 minutes in a hot dryer. Bed bugs can happen to anyone, anywhere. Bed bug exposure is not necessarily associated with living conditions. Please exercise caution, particularly when travelling and returning home. For more information please call Public Health at 306-778-5280 or visit www.cypress-health.ca/phi and click on ‘Pest Control & An-imal Bites’.
