101 YEaR-Old lEgislativE Building dOME gEts a FaCEliFtgov.ca -Work is underway to repair and restore the iconic Saskatchewan Legislative building dome exterior. A tower crane will be installed on-site, and structural steel and scaf-folding are being constructed so that workers can safely complete work on the surface of the dome. “This building is a representation of our history, identity and of democra-cy in Saskatchewan,” Central Services Minister Nancy Heppner said. “We
are proud to lead the dome conserva-tion project to ensure the safety of the building, and preserve its heritage and legacy for future generations.” Ongoing investigations into the condition of the dome exterior, begin-ning in 2008, have found that exten-sive conservation work is needed to repair the dome’s deteriorated stones, copper roofing and facade. The Saskatchewan Legislative build-ing is a heritage building, and repairs to the dome will comply with the Stan-dards and Guidelines for the Conser-vation of Historic Places in Canada

and The Heritage Property Act. The Ministry of Central Services is managing the restoration project, with funding from the Provincial Capital Commission. Conservation work includes the repair or replace-ment of stones and mortar, copper cladding and water management sys-tem. “The Legislative Building is a sym-bol of pride in our capital, with more than 25,000 people visiting on a year-ly basis,” Minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Kev-in Doherty said. “The work on the dome will help maintain this National Historic Site and Provincial Heritage Property for years to come.” Spencer Higgins Incorporated was selected as the project’s architect in 2012 upon completing a Request for Qualifications and Request for Pro-posals process. PCL Construction was selected as the project’s construc-tion manager through a Request for Proposal process in 2013. Planning and design work has tak-en place, and work on the dome is expected to be completed at the end of December 2015. The total project cost is estimated at $15 million.
8 tHings tO Put in an EMER-gEnCY kitcbc.ca - Emergency planners in Sas-katchewan are advising people to be prepared in the event a disaster hits and aid is not immediately available. As a guideline, planners suggest people consider what they would need to get by for 72 hours on their own. Being prepared is the focus of Emer-gency Preparedness Week, currently underway in Saskatchewan. On Tuesday, officials suggested people put together supply kits for an emergency.
This kit should include items like:
• Bottled water.• Battery-powered flashlight.• First-aid kit.• Non-perishable food and a manual can opener.• Prescriptions, medications and medical documents.• Equipment for people with disabil-ities.• Cash.• Information such as your home’s floor plan, location of emergency ex-its, a meeting area, up-to-date contact information and health card informa-tion The federal government’s Get Pre-pared website provides a similar list of emergency gear:
• Water (2 litres per person per day).• Food (canned food and energy bars).• Batteries and Flashlight.• Radio (wind-up or battery).• Can opener.• Cash.• Extra medication if needed.• First aid kit.• Extra keys for house and car.• Duct tape.• Candles (with matches or a lighter).• Change of clothes.• Sleeping bag/blanket

altERnatE sHOt A golfer playing in a two-man alternate shot tournament drove his tee shot to the edge of the green on a par-3 hole. His partner, playing the second shot, managed to chip it over the green into a bunker. Undaunted, the first golfer recovers with a fine shot to within one foot of the hole. The second golfer nervously putts, and sends the ball one foot past the hole, leaving the first golf-er to sink the putt. “Do you realize that we took five strokes on an easy par-3?” says the first golfer. “Yes, and don’t forget who took three of them!” answered his part-ner!
